WWE Main Event results: A mustachioed main event!

OKLAHOMA CITY ? WWE Main Event was chock full of intense action as Sheamus and Cody Rhodes battled in a rematch from three weeks ago and Justin Gabriel tried to match his agility and speed to Mark Henry?s raw strength.

Sheamus def. Cody Rhodes (PHOTOS | WATCH)

Three weeks ago on WWE Main Event, Cody Rhodes held the show hostage as he demanded placement in the Elimination Chamber Match before his battle with The Celtic Warrior. Sheamus narrowly defeated Rhodes, but their paths crossed on ION Television once again as Rhodes and ?The Lovestache? tried to woo Divas Champion Kaitlyn earlier in the day. The second generation Superstar?s advances were quickly interrupted by Sheamus and the two Superstars traded insults about their respective facial hair. As a result, Rhodes challenged The Celtic Warrior to a match, both seeking vengeance for their last contest and also trying to impress the Divas Champion.

As the battle got underway, Rhodes attempted a more conservative approach to his powerful opponent, trying to use his technical abilities to keep Sheamus on the defensive. Alas, the raw power of the Irish-born Superstar undoubtedly played to his advantage as he tossed Rhodes around ? seemingly with ease ? only enraging the mustachioed Superstar and forcing him to recalibrate outside the ring.

Back inside the squared circle, Rhodes once again was unable to gain any momentum as every attempt at an offensive strike was met by a counter from his opponent. Spilling to the outside, both Superstars countered effectively until a disaster kick knocking Sheamus off the ring apron finally gave the son of WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes an opening to work with.

Finally enjoying an advantage in the match, Rhodes attacked aggressively, keeping the three-time World Champion?s powerful arsenal in check. Displaying his impressive in-ring abilities, the former Intercontinental Champion balanced a technical approach to keep Sheamus grounded with impactful strikes and his natural agility. Although he had control of the match, Rhodes could not resist taunting his opponent and Sheamus found an opening to fight his way back into the match.

With the WWE Universe rising to their feet in support of the Irish-born Superstar, Sheamus siphoned that energy into a second wind and leveled the playing field. Proving his own resilience, Rhodes fought back and the intensity of both competitors led to a back and forth exchange. Finally, after a wild succession of countering signature maneuvers from both ring warriors, The Celtic Warrior found the perfect opportunity to execute the Brogue Kick to secure the victory.

EU expands its anti-Israel bias | Reporting on the Middle East ...

The European Union has formally recommended its 27 members ?prevent? Israeli activity in Judea and Samaria through an economic boycott.

Chana Ya?ar, February 27, 2012

The European Union has formally recommended its 27 member states ?prevent? Israeli activity in Judea and Samaria through an economic boycott of Jewish communities in those regions.?

The EU?s latest boycott recommendation came to light in the publication of the EU?s Jerusalem Report 2012, released Wednesday, in which the European body recommends its members avoid financial transactions with Israeli communities in Judea and Samaria, AFP reported.

In the report, the EU suggests its member states ?prevent, discourage and raise awareness about problematic implications of financial transactions, including foreign direct investments from within the EU in support of settlement activities, infrastructure and services.? The recommendation followed an internal report which alleged that Israel had used construction in eastern Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria to prevent the possibility of a two-state solution.?

In the strongly-worded 15-page report, the EU also calls to ?ensure that imports of settlement products do not benefit from preferential tariffs? and make sure that all such products are clearly labelled as originating from Israeli-occupied areas.?

The move comes as a clear statement of support for the Palestinian Authority?s attempt to oust some half a million Jews from their homes, and claim the entire area for its hoped-for independent, sovereign state without bothering with final status negotiations with Israel. This ignores the fact that by any legal parameter, Israel is not ?occupying? the area, which belongs to no sovereign state.

A successful first step in that process was made at the United Nations last September when the PA won an upgraded status via the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) as a non-member observer state. The move gained for the PA de facto recognition as a sovereign country by the international body, and helped circumvent the need for final status talks with Israel on a myriad of issues, as mandated by the internationally-recognized Oslo Accords.

The Palestinian Authority ? and much of the international community ? defines ?settlement activity ? in very broad terms, sometimes as broad as repairing a broken fence for a private home in an existing community, or paving a driveway. ?Settlement construction? is a term defined equally loosely, and includes such activities as adding a pergola to an existing front or back porch or patio, or even enclosing an existing balcony on a home in a community that numbers at least 25,000 residents and has existed for more than 35 years.

However, despite Israel?s willingness to negotiate, PA leaders refuse to engage in talks without preconditions, and each time negotiations have been suggested, they have categorically rejected any attempt to jumpstart the process unless Israel first agrees to all PA demands ? primary among them, a complete halt to all ?settlement activities,? the ?right of return? for more than five million foreign Arabs who once lived in the area and their generations of descendants, and the surrender of nearly half of Israel?s holy capital city, Jerusalem, for use as the future capital of the hoped-for PA state of ?Palestine.?

At present, the twin capitals of the Palestinian Authority are the Samaria-based city of Ramallah, and Gaza-based city of Gaza City, inasmuch as the two leading factions of the PA, Fatah and Hamas, have yet to even reach an agreement on creating a unity government.

Ghana's Turkson is Irish bookmakers' favorite for new pope

LONDON (Reuters) - Ghana's Peter Turkson is the Irish bookmakers' favorite to replace Pope Benedict, putting a non-European in pole position to lead the 1.2 billion-member Roman Catholic Church for the first time in more than a millennium.

Irish bookmaker Paddy Power offered odds of 11/4 against for Turkson, meaning successful punters would win 11 pounds for every four staked, while Britain's second largest bookmaker Ladbrokes offered odds of 5/2 against.

Turkson would be the first non-European to lead the Catholic church in more than a millennium if he is chosen to succeed Benedict. Italian Angelo Scola is second favorite according to Paddy Power at 3/1 against.

"Pope Benedict quitting leaves a tall hat to fill - let's just hope God gives him a good reference for his next job," a Paddy Power spokesperson said in a statement. "As for the betting, the real action kicks off now."

The new pope will inherit a Church scarred by Vatileaks and by child abuse scandals in Europe and the United States, both of which may have weighed on Benedict's decision to decide he was too old and weak to continue the papacy.

The pope has two days left before he takes the historic step of becoming the first pontiff in some six centuries to step down instead of ruling for life.

Betting on the new pope earlier in February had ranked Nigeria's Cardinal Francis Arinze and Canadian Marc Ouellet alongside Turkson in a three 'cardinal' race.

Some 115 cardinals will enter a closed-door conclave at the Vatican in March.

"While Turkson and Scola are currently out in front, let us not forget those fabled words ?he who enters the conclave as Pope, leaves it as a Cardinal'," the Paddy Power spokesman said.

Paddy Power said Turkson has attracted the highest number of bets, accounting for 15 percent of the market and is shouldering the biggest single bet of 5,000 pounds ($7,600).

The head of the Vatican's justice and peace department, the Ghanaian has been tipped as Africa's frontrunner in a contest heavy with speculation that a Latin American or African could be elected as chief of the 1.2 billion-strong Catholic population.

While Canada's Ouellet is still in the running at 7/1 according to Ladbrokes, Arinze's standing at both bookmakers has sunk to 25/1.

Paddy Power said that betting on who will be elected as the new pope is set to become the largest non-sporting market in its history. It said it had taken 300,000 pounds on "pope betting".

Dark horses include a fictional character from Irish sitcom Father Ted, the simple-minded Father Dougal McGuire, who has attracted nine more bets than real-life Brazilian Cardinal Claudio Hummes. ($1 = 0.6608 British pounds)

TokBox?s WebRTC-Based Video Chat Platform Now Supports Firefox Nightly And Aurora

tokbox_firefox_logoTokBox, the live video-chat platform that was acquired by Spain’s Telef?nica in 2012, was one of the first companies to fully bet on WebRTC (the Web Real-Time Communication API), the quickly developing standard for plugin-free, in-browser video, audio and text chat. After launching its Chrome integration earlier this year, TokBox today debuted its support for Mozilla’s Firefox, starting with the bleeding-edge Aurora and Nightly editions of the popular browser. Now that TokBox supports Firefox, developers using its WebRTC-based?OpenTok platform can write video-enabled apps that allow for chats between users on iOS, Chrome and Firefox. With WebRTC now being part of Firefox’s early-release?versions, users can expect to see it in the stable version of Firefox somewhere around version 21 or 22 (the stable channel is currently on version 19). As TokBox CEO Ian Small told me last week, his company started working with Mozilla around last November. His team received early access to Mozilla’s WebRTC implementations and worked closely with the team there as Mozilla stabilized its own implementations of the standard. TokBox’s OpenTok platform ensures that developers don’t have to worry about the different WebRTC implementations on different browsers. The platform will also provide numerous additional services that a native WebRTC app doesn’t provide, including, for example, broadcasting to a large group of viewers and video recording. OpenTok, the company says, is currently being used by more than 70,000 organizations, including the likes of Major League Baseball, Ford, Bridgestone and the remote presence startup Double Robotics. “Between Firefox 21 and Chrome 25,” Small told me, “we now have what appears to be a reasonably stable interop situation.” WebRTC, he argued, is still “in its infancy.” The native version in the browser can be used to connect two people, but the standard doesn’t offer features like letting developers connect more than two people at a time or even record sessions. Based on TokBox’s experience with WebRTC, Small also believes that the spec should accommodate alternative video codecs besides the Google-backed VP8 format. In addition, he argues that bandwidth allocation, which would allow apps to devote more bandwidth to the speaker, for example, should be part of the standard. Despite these issues, however, Small believes that WebRTC will see “serious pickup” in the second half of this year, especially now that most of the key mobile and desktop platforms support it.

Google+ Sign-In for sites and apps promises no 'social spam'

"Try the red pill," an image posted by Google+ director Matt Waddell urges. "Simple and secure, minus the social spam." Google's geeky reference to "The Matrix" is a thinly disguised attack on Facebook's universal log-in feature. The search engine giant launched its own competing sign-in feature for third-party websites and apps Tuesday, and though it is powered by Google+, the promise is that it won't litter your feeds with pointless oversharing.

Google+ Sign-In takes on Facebook Connect, a universal login system familiar to most. You know the drill. You go to a new site or open a new app and you're prompted to go through the tedious process of creating an account. But then there's that little blue button, suggesting that you login via Facebook. So convenient.

Now there'll be a little red button, too. (Hence the "red pill" reference from "The Matrix.") And Google's really pushing the argument that it's the better choice.

"It?s secure, and it prohibits social spam," emphasizes Seth Sternberg, Google's director of product management for Google+, in a post on the official Google+ developers blog. "And we?re just getting started."

When you use Google+ Sign-In, you'll enter your Google credentials and view a summary of what's about to happen. Will the owner of the website or the developer behind an app see your name, basic info, and the people you're connected to on Google+? Will he or she see your email address? Will the people you're connected to on Google+ see that you're using that app or website? A prominent "only you" option keeps information limited to ... only you. (Meaning that your pals won't be seeing anything you don't want them to.) The whole setup's quite similar to that of Facebook Connect, so it's doubtful that anyone who has used the latter will be too confused.

There's a key difference though: "Google+ doesn?t let apps spray 'frictionless' updates all over the stream," Sternberg writes, "so app activity will only appear when it?s relevant (like when you?re actually looking for it)."

If you do choose to actively share something from a site or an app, you'll create an "interactive" post on Google+. Whoever is able to see the post will be able to click on it to visit an app or site to buy, listen to, read, or review whatever you shared.

Essentially, Google+ Sign-In is like a polished version of Facebook Connect. It lets you play things closer to the vest and offers solid sharing options when you're in the mood to announce something to the world.

The Guardian, Fitbit, Flixxter, USA Today, Shazam, and OpenTable are among some of the first sites and apps to start using Google+ Sign-In, so you can check out how it works in action. (If you're not seeing the little red button, be patient. The rollout of it is gradual.)

Obviously, one of the questions for Google is whether or not this new tool will drive sign-up and participation in Google+ ? something that's not exactly guaranteed. Odds are on the young social network's side though, as existing Google users are likely to "upgrade" to Google+ in order to take advantage of the universal sign-in.

Slick Santiago set for a cracking show in Stadium Bookmakers ...

Slick Santiago set for a cracking show in Stadium Bookmakers Standard Trophy at Nottingham

The bookies have done the right thing by giving Slick Santiago the highest odds for Monday?s Stadium Bookmakers Standard Trophy at Nottingham. The black dog surely deserves plenty of respect on his latest acts.

After making flying trials here and at Romford, he is raring to go. There are no doubts over his class, and therefore one can easily expect him to make a winning comeback.

The trainee of K. Allsop went on vacations in October. After facing a terrible loss at Hall Green in September, the son of Droopys Scolari took a break of more than six weeks.

He returned with great ambition, but nothing worked for the big fellow. He, however, showed good improvement, and sealed the second place at Coventry on October 21st.

It was a very good ride, as he missed the crown only by half a length. Having taken a long break, he is aiming to return with great fire. The recent trials suggest that all is well for him. All he needs to fire is one hundred percent effort.

Among the rivals are: Head Iton Eoin, Cleveland Peter, Razldazl Panda, Ardmayle Driver, and Conor Pass Mick. The 500 metres contest is scheduled to begin at 19:48 GMT. A cash prize of 200 pounds is reserved for the triumphant hound.

Conor Pass Mick stays but likely to need the run. The black dog has done reasonably well in the fresh trials, but this is a different ball game. The draw is a massive plus for him though.

Head Iton Eoin took a surprise but welcome win last week. The black dog is well drawn, and holds a few things in favour. It is hard to take anything away from him.

Ardmayle Driver is coming into form, but has a tricky slot to overcome. Cleveland Peter bags of early pace, but the 500 metres take him to the edge.

Razldazl Panda was behind Head Iton Eoin last week, but still ran pretty well. On that good run, the white and black dog should be respected. We wish the best of luck to all the hounds.

France Plans Military Presence in West Africa After Mali War: UN Sources

'French diplomats have started briefing the UN, the US and other major powers on a plan for a so-called ?beyond the horizon? force which will purportedly be tasked with conducting necessary future operations against the fighters in Mali.

France has not informed its allies of the exact location of the force, but diplomats say it will probably be stationed in Senegal, Niger, or Chad, where France has military bases.

On January 11, France launched a war in Mali under the pretext of halting the advance of fighters who had taken control of the north of the West African country. The United States, Canada, Britain, Belgium, Germany, and Denmark have aided France in its war on the African country.'

Aereo's fledgling broadcast streaming service is getting a huge boost today with the news that it's now available to the 19 or so million residents in the New York "designated market area." In short, that means that it can now be used in New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania as well as within the five boroughs. Aereo's still intending to reach a further 22 cities later this year, and you'll soon be able to see adverts for the service popping up all over NYC -- so if your luddite colleagues suddenly start talking about "this Aereo TV thingy," you know why.

Nobu honored at South Beach Wine and Food Festival

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? His name is drawn on the napkins and chop sticks at his more than 30 restaurants around the world, but chef and restaurateur Nobuyuki "Nobu" Matsuhisa prefers to stay out of the limelight.

"Normally I am the chef. Today is a tie and suit and I feel bad," he told The Associated Press, referring to his preference of being in the kitchen than in front of a large audience for a tribute dinner.

Nobu, as he prefers to be called, was honored Saturday at the South Beach Wine and Food Festival for his fusion cuisine that blends Japanese and South American ingredients.

"I've been cooking all my life. Life was not easy, but finally I'm here."

Life has been busy ? and quite successful ? for the Japanese-born chef who started cooking at the age of 18. He opened his first restaurant Matsuhisa in Beverly Hills in 1987 and today has 31 restaurants in more than two dozen cities around the world, from the Bahamas to Beijing. Nobu Tribeca was named "The Best New Restaurant" by The James Beard Foundation in 1995.

His latest venture extends into the hotel industry with the recently opened Nobu Hotel Restaurant and Lounge Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, said to be the largest Nobu restaurant to date. Nobu partnered with actor Robert DeNiro on the project, as he has done since 1994 with other restaurants.

"Before I met him, I had restaurants with other partners but never success," Nobu said. "But with Bob, he respects me. He understands my work. We drink and talk with each other. We also fight, but this communication makes for a nice partnership."

One of his fondest memories includes cooking for Princess Diana before her death in 1997. The soft-spoken chef remembers walking up to her table to introduce himself, but she already knew who he was from magazine articles and restaurant reviews.

"I was so proud of that," he said of that moment. Even today, Nobu takes pride in seeing his customers smile at his restaurants. Or the 85-year-old man who visited his Las Vegas spot and sent Nobu a thank you card. He says that is what makes him want to keep cooking.

"Cooking is my life. And still I am thinking of new dishes."

Nobu plans to slow things down ? eventually ? so he can travel more to see different foods and spend more time with his family.

Until then, Nobu wanted to share a special message to his friends and family: "Thank you is a short word. But I would like to thank you from my heart."

New York Mayor Bloomberg finances anti-gun ads in Chicago race

WASHINGTON ? One of the key players in a special Democratic congressional primary Tuesday in Chicago comes from New York.

That city's mayor, Michael R. Bloomberg, is using his vast wealth to challenge a candidate running on a gun rights platform in the first election since the school shooting in Newtown, Conn. ? a move that underscores his crusade to serve as a political counterweight to the National Rifle Assn.

The NRA has chosen not to counter Bloomberg's ads attacking its preferred candidate, former Rep. Debbie Halvorson, and liberal Chicago districts are an imperfect test case. But Bloomberg's lavish participation in the race may be enough to cause political ripples, as other lawmakers are put on notice that next time, the mayor's millions could be spent in their districts.

"Folks running for office are going to have to stand behind their record," said Stefan Friedman, spokesman for Bloomberg's "super PAC," Independence USA.

Gun rights supporters have clearly gotten the message. Richard Pearson, executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Assn., said his group was caught off-guard by the mayor's surprise attack, and he warned sympathizers in other states: "Bloomberg is coming to your state. Be ready."

The race is for the seat that was held by Jesse Jackson Jr. until his resignation last fall. His congressional tenure was cut short by mental health troubles and allegations of ethical lapses. More than a dozen Democrats have launched bids to replace him; in the solidly liberal district, the primary winner is almost certain to win in April's general election.

Halvorson has tried to distinguish herself from the large Democratic field, and to appeal to voters in a rural portion of the district, by supporting the right to carry concealed weapons and opposing an assault weapons ban. Bloomberg's advertising barrage has relentlessly attacked Halvorson, who has an "A" rating from the NRA, and has championed Cook County administrator Robin Kelly, who has made support for new gun laws a centerpiece of her campaign.

The district includes predominantly African American communities in urban southern Chicago and its nearby suburbs, and neighboring rural areas that are largely white.

Even before December's shooting in Newtown, gun violence was destined to be a central election issue. Chicago recorded more than 500 homicides in 2012, and the vast majority of those deaths were linked to firearms.

By spending $2.2 million on anti-gun ads, Bloomberg has propelled the race into the national spotlight, prompting other advocacy groups to jump into the fray.

"This is our first chance to beat the NRA this year," exhorted Democracy for America, a Vermont-based organization that is an offshoot of former Gov. Howard Dean's 2004 presidential campaign, in an email to supporters.

"We absolutely should see this as a bellwether," said Arshad Hasan, the group's executive director. "It is a referendum on the power that the NRA has."

Political analyst Stuart Rothenberg cautioned against viewing this special election as an indicator of larger trends.

"This is not a district somehow reflective of the nation as a whole," Rothenberg said. "The gun issue is going to play differently there than it will in rural Ohio or the South or a number of places."

The Halvorson campaign says the economy, not guns, is the top concern of voters in the district.

"We're just not going to let a guy from N.Y. dictate what's going to happen in this election," said Sean Howard, spokesman for the Halvorson campaign.

The NRA has kept a low profile in this race, opting not to weigh in with its own television ads or direct mail. The only advocacy for gun rights has come from the Illinois State Rifle Assn., which sent mailers on Halvorson's behalf to its several thousand members in the district.

This is not Bloomberg's first foray outside of his home state.

In 2012, Bloomberg spent $8.2 million on five House races, targeting candidates with top marks from the NRA. Three of his preferred candidates won; in one notable coup, his super PAC helped defeat Rep. Joe Baca (D-Calif.) by spending more than Baca and his opponent combined. The television ads in that race did not focus on guns, as the Illinois ones have.

Democratic strategist Bill Carrick said Bloomberg's spending in Chicago demonstrates that his political activism will be sustained.

"I don't think he's going away," Carrick said. "I don't think, win or lose, they'll overreact to results of one election. They're just going to keep on coming."

Speech had little to do with real state of the union

Published: Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 08:00 AM.

By CALVIN B. KOESY

PANAMA CITY
President Obama delivered his State of the Union address superbly and with his customary confidence. It was actually a ?wish list? of the things that might reflect creditably on his legacy. The harsh reality is that the nation is broke and would have to borrow heavily to accomplish these lofty goals. So the State of the Union is framed in his personal ideology and that of his party and has little to do with the real state of the nation.

As he introduced the wish list, he said? these things will not increase the nation?s deficit by one thin dime. He anticipated the reaction of his serious-minded critics. Anyone who believes his statement just fell off the turnip truck.

He mentioned that because of the energy steps his administration has taken, ?electricity costs less now than it did when he took office.? Perhaps someone else?s does but the writer?s electrical bill is about 18 percent higher that it was a year age despite the much milder winter. Also, motor fuel prices are now doubled what they were when he took office.

In his address he stated that ?sanctions on Iran are working.? There is no doubt that the citizens of Iran are suffering greatly, but the mullahs who run the country are unaffected. The Iranian government has continued relentlessly to develop a nuclear bomb and the missile carrying ability to deliver it.

During his address as the president described the pet project in each of the departments, the television camera panned on each department secretary who offered a smile. The president?s speech was interrupted many times by standing ovations. When the president said, ?We will maintain the best military the world has ever known,? the four heads of the military branches, resplendent in their black and gold dress uniforms, did not crack a smile. They knew that their commander-in-chief had signed off on the sequester bill that will devastate their branch of service. They also knew that they will be asked to do more with less and that the outlook for the nation?s national security is very grim indeed.

The nation?s business community was shocked when the president said, ?We must raise the federal minimum wage and tie it to the cost of living.? They knew that action would be a profound job killer.

The Founding Fathers visualized three coequal branches of government. They somehow knew that for the nation?s business to be conducted effectively, each branch would have to have great respect for each other. The State of the Union is one rare occasion where their leaders are all together in one room listening to the president. They also knew that these leaders would have to make hard practical decisions on public policy. ?

Sen. Marco Rubio followed the president with his view of the state of union. He mentioned that the most pressing problem was the increasing deficit. It was paralyzing private investment and preventing economic growth. He said that the economic growth was stagnating at around 2 percent a year and we needed at least 4 percent economic growth. The growth of entitlements was the single most contributing factor to the deficit. He said, ?The president?s plan does nothing to save Medicare and Social Security.? He pressed for limiting government, lowering taxes and encouraging the growth of the private sector.

The frightening thing about the two different speeches is that the junior senator from Florida, with less than three years of service at the national level, has a keener sense of the true state of the union than the president who has available to him the sharpest minds in the country.

In the Bible, the Book of Proverbs has an interesting statement on human behavior: ?Pride only breeds quarrels, but wisdom is found in those who seek (good) advice.? The word in parenthesis is the writer?s.

93% Amour

All Critics (174) | Top Critics (44) | Fresh (158) | Rotten (12)

Trintignant perfectly captures the resolve that eventually borders on obsession, as the woman he loves gradually, maddeningly, disappears before his eyes, and he does whatever he can to prevent it, though he knows it's impossible.

Many viewers will find echoes of their grandparents, parents, or even themselves in these characters.

A movie that is utterly worthy of its all-encompassing title.

The resulting interplay of ruthless restraint and unavoidable passion, plus the film's refusal to shrink from depicting the inevitable horrors of physical deterioration, is devastating.

In many ways it's the best horror film I've ever seen. At the same time, it's hard to recommend; I believe I will be struggling to forget this film as long as I live. I doubt I'll succeed.

As remarkable as Haneke's films are, not a one has been as transcendently generous as Amour, which is nominated for five Academy Awards, including best picture, best director and best foreign-language film.

Michael Haneke's most intimate and painfully truthful film - an exploration of what love means at the far end of life.

This is a movie almost too painful to watch at times, yet so masterfully composed and acted - Riva absolutely deserves her Oscar nomination, while Trintignant was robbed - that it's impossible to turn away.

Georges' irreversible decision may be courageous, but it requires no sacrifice on the part of his creator: for Haneke, it's business as usual.

Trintignant and Riva are unforgettably brilliant as the aging couple we can all identify with.

Haneke's startling film stands in stark contrast with other recent, comedic fare that seemingly addresses similar issues.

My review is categorized as 'favourable' not because I enjoyed the film (that's not Michael Haneke's intent) but because I recognise what he is trying to say and that he says it with a unique cinematic voice

Debilitation and loss of control is a harsh topic, yet Haneke's film is surprisingly gentle, exploring the constraints and options faced, as old age delivers its ultimate blow - the loss of self and ability to function with dignity

Amour is a pure depiction of love, in all its many forms.

The furthest thing from sweet sorrow imaginable, Amour gets real about the pain of parting in every sense of the word.

This subject matter is ripe for sentimentalization, but Haneke resists it at every turn, opting instead for unflinching honesty. It is the economy of theme paired with the subtle richness of character that make Amour so powerful.

Clearly, Amour, Michael Haneke and Emmanuelle Riva don't really need me to additionally sing their praises (although praise is indeed all I have), so let's discuss Jean-Louis Trintignant for a moment.

All is presented in Haneke's exacting style, one that I find controlling and a bit, well, smothering.

An insightful, memorable film about what it means to love.

A tale about love at its most terribly, backbreakingly difficult.

In many ways, it's a horror film, as the woman descends into helplessness, and - like the audience - the man can only watch. It's a potent piece of filmmaking.

The superb Trintignant and the Oscar-nominated Riva -- who would win, in a just world -- embody once-vigorous people in inevitable decline.

    First Baseman

Cincinnati Reds 1B Joey Votto will play for Team Canada in the World Baseball Classic.

    1B | Micah Owings | Washington Nationals | Injury
Washington Nationals 1B Micah Owings (shoulder) hasn't been throwing or taking live batting practice after he underwent an MRI exam, which has held him back for a few days. He's expected to be fine, though.

1B | Todd Helton | Colorado Rockies | Injury, Fantasy
Colorado Rockies 1B Todd Helton (hip) will miss the first few spring training games. He has shown good bat speed early in camp, but isn't quite where he needs to be.

1B | Logan Morrison | Miami Marlins | Injury, Fantasy
Updating previous reports, Miami Marlins OF Logan Morrison (knee) will begin a month-long running progression by running on a treadmill Thursday, Feb. 21. The hope is he'll be ready by April 15.

    Second Baseman

2B | Dustin Ackley | Seattle Mariners | Injury, Fantasy
Seattle Mariners manager Eric Wedge said 2B Dustin Ackley (ankle) and SS Brendan Ryan (elbow) will be held out of the first three spring games after they are returning from minor offseason surgeries.

    2B | Chris Nelson | Colorado Rockies | Fantasy
Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss is keeping an open mind when it comes to the competition for the starting third base job this spring. 3B Chris Nelson is the favorite for the spot because of his bat as he competes with INFs Jordan Pacheco, DJ LeMahieu and Nolan Arenado. However, Nelson's defense may set him back. Nelson is leaner this spring after doing speed training with Atlanta Braves OF Jason Heyward and Baltimore Orioles OF Xavier Avery in the offseason. "I don't want to feel heavy legs again in spring. I really worked out on it. I am sore, but it's not the heavy sore like before," Nelson said. "I am going out there every day, competing, taking nothing for granted. Sometimes things take longer than you expect because you have to learn along the way."

    Shortstop

SS | Rafael Furcal | St. Louis Cardinals | Injury, Fantasy
St. Louis Cardinals SS Rafael Furcal (elbow) is still feeling pain in his right elbow, and he's been told to refrain from swinging left-handed or throwing with much effort. "It still hurts," Furcal said of his elbow. Asked the degree to which it hurt, Furcal answered, "A lot." Furcal hasn't had a cortisone to deal with a bone spur in his elbow and said that his elbow was "a little tight" Thursday, Feb. 21. He continues to participate in fielding drills, but he doesn't throw across the field at max effort. The team won't have him in the lineup for the spring opener or the first few games, and he'll likely be the designated hitter when he does play. St. Louis still believes he'll be ready for opening day.

    Third Baseman

    3B | Josh Vitters | Chicago Cubs | Injury
Updating a previous report, Chicago Cubs 3B Josh Vitters (quadriceps) is day to day.

3B | Brett Lawrie | Toronto Blue Jays | Fantasy
Toronto Blue Jays INF/OF Mark DeRosa is hoping to serve as a mentor to 3B Brett Lawrie this year, and the two have lockers next to each other this spring. "I hope to be a sounding board for him," DeRosa said. "I hope to put him in a position to give him certain things to think about. Obviously, the talent level is there for him to be a perennial All-Star and one of the better players in the game."

    Catcher

    C | J.P. Arencibia | Toronto Blue Jays | Fantasy,
Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons confirmed that SP R.A. Dickey will have a personal catcher this season. Gibbons seems to be leaning toward using Cs Josh Thole or Henry Blanco over C J.P. Arencibia, though, since both Thole and Blanco have experiencing catching Dickey with the New York Mets. However, Arencibia has been working with Dickey in recent bullpen sessions and will play with him for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic.

    C | Kurt Suzuki | Washington Nationals | Fantasy
Washington Nationals C Kurt Suzuki said he wants to stay with the team past this season, but he has yet to talk with the team about a contract extension. "I love it here. I love the guys in the clubhouse. It's a fun clubhouse. I got to know quite a few of these guys really well," Suzuki said. "They are just great guys to be around. The other part that doesn't hurt, it's a really good team. It's going to be a really good team for a long time."

C | John Buck | New York Mets | Fantasy
New York Mets C John Buck is one of the most well prepared catchers in the big leagues because of his attention to detail when it comes to learning his pitchers' tendencies and habits on the mound. "He prepares as well as any catcher I've ever played with," said SP Shaun Marcum, who first played with Buck in 2010. "He's always ready." New York likes Buck because he's an excellent game-calling catcher for their pitchers. However, C Travis d'Arnaud will likely be up to play every day in the first couple months of the season, making Buck a trade candidate at some point.

C | Wilson Ramos | Washington Nationals | Injury, Fantasy
Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson said C Wilson Ramos (knee) will serve as the designated hitter in the spring game Sunday, Feb. 24, and he'll likely serve as the DH every other game for a short while.

C | Mike Napoli | Boston Red Sox | Injury, Fantasy

Chicago White Sox OF Jordan Danks (elbow) will be out a few days with a right flexor strain.

OF | Lucas Duda | New York Mets | Fantasy
New York Mets OF Lucas Duda has minimized the movement in his swing. "It's just quieting some things down," Duda said. "I just eliminated the toe tap, and my hands in the past have been kind of crazy (with movement.) It's quieter."

OF | Justin Ruggiano | Miami Marlins | Injury, Fantasy
Miami Marlins OF Justin Ruggiano (back) had an MRI on his stiff lower back and is awaiting the results.

OF | Alejandro De Aza | Chicago White Sox | Fantasy
Chicago White Sox OF Alejandro De Aza will play for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic. De Aza will leave for the Classic March 3 to train with the team. He will be replacing Milwaukee Brewers OF Carlos Gomez, who has decided not to play in the tournament.

OF | Cameron Maybin | San Diego Padres | Injury, Fantasy
San Diego Padres 2B Logan Forsythe (knee) and OF Cameron Maybin (wrist) are very close to full activity.

OF | Rick Ankiel | Houston Astros | Fantasy
Houston Astros OF Rick Ankiel has a good shot to make the opening day roster, and he could even wind up starting in right field. He'll earn $750,000 with incremental bonuses based on plate appearances if he makes the team. Ankiel's strong outfield arm may set him apart from the team's other options. Those he'll be competing with include OFs Justin Maxwell, Fernando Martinez, J.D. Martinez and Brandon Barnes.

OF | Curtis Granderson | New York Yankees | Fantasy
New York Yankees OFs Curtis Granderson and Brett Gardner plan will likely be flip-flopped between center and left field during spring training. "We're gonna toy with it and see if we like it," manager Joe Girardi said after the first workout in which Granderson took fly balls in left and Gardner in center. "If we do, we'll stay with it. If we don't, we won't."

OF | Conor Jackson | Baltimore Orioles | Injury, Fantasy
Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter said OF Conor Jackson's (back) back has improved, but he's still listed as day-to-day. Jackson is likely to return before C Luis Martinez (oblique).

OF | Oscar Taveras | St. Louis Cardinals | Fantasy
St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny indicated that he'd like to give OF Oscar Taveras plenty of playing time in center field this spring as well as the corner outfield spots. "The big focus has been the past season or so getting exposure at center (field), knowing that will help him play the corner positions better," Matheny said Taveras and the likelihood he'll see playing time at all three outfield positions this spring. "He's not foreign to center field as well. With Carlos (Beltran) going to the (World Baseball Classic) there are definitely some innings available all the way around."

OF | Giancarlo Stanton | Miami Marlins | Injury, Fantasy
Miami Marlins OF Giancarlo Stanton (head) was back at camp Thursday, Feb. 21, after being hit in the head by a pitch Wednesday, Feb. 20, and he was feeling better. "It all checked out fine," Stanton said the morning after receiving a scare. "I was pretty loopy, I must say, yesterday. But for the most part, I feel fine. ... But we're going to see how much activity (I can do) in the weight room and how that goes." X-rays on his head came back negative. Stanton said he expects to be ready to play in the spring opener Saturday, Feb. 23, and still plans on playing for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic.

OF | Lorenzo Cain | Kansas City Royals | Injury, Fantasy
Kansas City Royals OF Lorenzo Cain (hand) said his strained right hand is better. He will start hitting Saturday, Feb. 23, and hopes to play Monday, Feb. 25.

OF | Jacoby Ellsbury | Boston Red Sox | Fantasy
Boston Red Sox OF Jacoby Ellsbury is manager John Farrell's preferred leadoff hitter.

OF | Alex Hassan | Boston Red Sox | Injury
Boston Red Sox OF Alex Hassan (foot) is out of a walking boot and has begun throwing. He isn't hitting yet, but will have a follow-up MRI next week.

    Starting Pitcher

SP | Johan Santana | New York Mets | Fantasy
New York Mets SP Johan Santana had his first appearance pushed back to March 10-15. The team said there is nothing wrong with him, he is just stretching out and strengthening his arm. He is still in long-tossing mode.

SP | Jake Arrieta | Baltimore Orioles | Fantasy
A rival executive expects the Baltimore Orioles to shop SPs Zach Britton and Jake Arrieta later this spring. The team has a surplus of starters.

SP | Carlos Carrasco | Cleveland Indians | Fantasy
Cleveland Indians SP Carlos Carrasco has a six-game suspension pending from throwing at a batter July 29, 2011.

SP | Shelby Miller | St. Louis Cardinals | Injury, Fantasy
Updating previous reports, St. Louis Cardinals SP Shelby Miller (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Friday, Feb. 22.

SP | Phil Hughes | New York Yankees | Injury, Fantasy
Updating a previous item, New York Yankees SP Phil Hughes (back) could be out longer than one week because of a bulging disk in his back. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said it could be two weeks before Hughes could resume throwing off a mound.

SP | Martin Perez | Texas Rangers | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy,
The Texas Rangers are considering SP's Randy Wells, Kyle McClellan, Justin Grimm, Martin Perez and Robbie Ross as placeholders for the fifth spot in the rotation until SP Colby Lewis can return to active duty.

SP | Barry Zito | San Francisco Giants | Fantasy,
San Francisco Giants SP Barry Zito looked extremely focused during his live batting practice session Thursday, Feb. 21, and his breaking balls had a familiar bite to them. Zito's fastballs had a downward plane to them and he was throwing everything from the same release point, straight over top.

SP | Chris Sale | Chicago White Sox | Fantasy,
The Chicago White Sox will give SP Chris Sale two days off between throwing, and he won't pitch again until Saturday, Feb. 23, after throwing live batting practice Wednesday, Feb. 20. Sale threw a career-high 192 innings last year, up 71 frames from the year before. His first spring start will come March 1, and he appears on track to start on opening day April 1. Sale is targeting between five and eight spring starts this year.

SP | Brandon Morrow | Toronto Blue Jays | Fantasy,
Toronto Blue Jays SP Brandon Morrow will only throw one inning in the team's spring opener Saturday, Feb. 23, and he's the only starter not scheduled for two innings his first time out. It has to do with his past success with that plan more than anything else, though. "It's what he did last year," pitching coach Pete Walker said. "We're going to stick to what worked for him. He had a great spring last year, came along nicely. (We) gave him the necessary days off that he needed to keep him fresh, and things worked very well, so he's going to stick to the plan."

SP | Erasmo Ramirez | Seattle Mariners | Fantasy,
Behind Seattle Mariners SPs Felix Hernandez, Hisashi Iwakuma and Joe Saunders, SPs Blake Beavan and Erasmo Ramirez are the front-runners to fill out the rotation, but they'll have to withstand pushes from Ps Taijuan Walker, Danny Hultzen, James Paxton and Brandon Maurer. Also, SPs Jon Garland and Jeremy Bonderman are making good impressions early in spring. "They've both been very impressive," manager Eric Wedge said of Garland and Bonderman. "It's early in camp, and we have to see how they stand the test of wear and tear and going out there and pitching on a regular basis. But they're both going to get good opportunities to make this ballclub." Bonderman is weighing 220 pounds this spring, which is around 25 pounds less than he weighed when he played for the Detroit Tigers.

SP | Carlos Martinez | St. Louis Cardinals | Fantasy,
St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez is now two weeks late to camp due to visa issues.

SP | Adam Wainwright | St. Louis Cardinals | Fantasy,
St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright will make his Grapefruit League debut Monday, Feb. 25, putting him on schedule to start the team's opening day game against the Arizona Diamondbacks April 1. The Cardinals haven't named their opening day starter, but Wainwright is the obvious candidate.

SP | Dan Haren | Washington Nationals | Fantasy,
Washington Nationals SP Dan Haren said his main focus this spring is on developing his fastball and cutter on the right side of the plate. "A lot of my game is on the left side of the plate with cutters and fastballs," Haren said. "But toward the end of last season in September, I started doing some different things on the right side of the plate with my cutter and fastball and working them in together out there, and started having a lot of success. But it's still a work-in-progress." SP Jordan Zimmermann is focusing on his changeup and throwing it with confidence, and he said he didn't entirely trust the pitch last year.

SP | Wily Peralta | Milwaukee Brewers | Injury, Fantasy,
Milwaukee Brewers SP Wily Peralta (shoulder) is slightly behind the other pitchers in camp due to some slight shoulder stiffness, but the team was impressed with his bullpen session Thursday, Feb. 21, and Peralta should be able to catch up in camp. "He'll be ready right away," said pitching coach Rick Kranitz. "He threw great today. He'll throw again day after tomorrow. Then we're into (live) BP." Peralta is a leading candidate for a rotation spot.

SP | Christian Garcia | Washington Nationals | Injury, Fantasy,
Washington Nationals SP Christian Garcia (wrist, stomach) underwent an MRI exam on his right wrist and forearm Thursday, Feb. 21, and he will stay off a mound for at least a few days. Garcia remains confident that the injury isn't a big deal, and the pain only affects him when he throws a fastball. Doctors have ruled out that Garcia's stomach issue is appendicitis.

SP | Kyle Kendrick | Philadelphia Phillies | Fantasy,
Philadelphia Phillies SP Kyle Kendrick will be the team's fourth starter this year after throwing 63 impressive innings over the last 48 days of the season in 2012. The Phils are entrusting more responsibility upon Kendrick because they think he has grown as a pitcher. Kendrick raised his strikeouts late last year and his changeup became an out pitch. "I got confidence from my manager and my pitching coach," Kendrick said. "Not that I didn't have it before, but maybe I didn't know it. I had confidence from them. I had confidence from my teammates. I was confident in myself." Pitching coach Rich Dubee said Kendrick struggled initially upon his entrance to the majors because he didn't have the time to develop a full arsenal of pitches.

RP | Matt Thornton | Chicago White Sox | Injury, Fantasy,
Chicago White Sox RP Matt Thornton (elbow) played catch Thursday, Feb. 21, and he's not as worried about his triceps soreness. "All we are pretty much doing is bump my live BP back a couple of days," Thornton said. "Do catch, catch, bullpen, day off and live BP. I don't know, we'll talk about that when we get there and see how it feels." He thinks the pain is attributed to tendonitis.

RP | Scott Downs | Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | Fantasy,

"He's getting back to a really good place mentally," pitching coach Juan Nieves said. "It's going to be baby steps. This will be the first test drive. The stuff is there, the explosiveness. Just don't let his mental side choke his physical side. Let your abilities come out."

"He's a guy who I trust to come into a game in a tight situation," manager Ned Yost said, "and get us out of it. Those guys are hard to find. The thing that's so encouraging to me is I feel I've got a bullpen stocked with those guys." Crow has no problem with staying in relief, and he's been refining his pitches this spring.

"No comment," the A's left-hander said. "I'm here to play baseball."

RP | Jose Valverde | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy,
