TCU drug bust includes 4 football players (AP)

FORT WORTH, Texas ? Authorities arrested 17 students in a sweeping drug sting at Texas Christian University on Wednesday, a bust that included four members of the Horned Frogs football team accused of selling marijuana to undercover officers during the season and as recently as a few weeks ago.

Police said the 17 people who were arrested were caught making "hand-to-hand" sales of marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy and prescription drugs to undercover officers. They said the bust followed a six-month investigation prompted by complaints from students, parents and others.

The arrests stunned the campus community, coming just one day after a thrilling overtime victory by the men's basketball team and less than 24 hours after TCU released its football schedule for next season, its first in the Big 12 Conference. TCU has an enrollment of about 9,500 students, but the involvement of the athletes drew the most scrutiny.

"There are days people want to be a head football coach, but today is not one of those days," coach Gary Patterson said. "As I heard the news this morning, I was first shocked, then hurt and now I'm mad."

Three prominent defensive players on the team were arrested: Linebacker Tanner Brock, the leading tackler two seasons ago, defensive tackle D.J. Yendrey and cornerback Devin Johnson. The other player is offensive lineman Ty Horn.

Police said they had not determined whether the four were selling to their teammates or other athletes, though the arrest affidavits raise the possibility.

In November, a Fort Worth police officer was informed that Horn was selling marijuana to "college students and football players at Texas Christian." The officer allegedly bought marijuana that day, Nov. 3, two days before a road game at Wyoming, from both Horn and Yendrey.

Arrest affidavits describe clandestine meetings between undercover officers players in a grocery store parking lot and outside restaurants, with dope purchases taking place in local homes. Police say they bought thousands of dollars in marijuana between November and February.

On Feb. 1, there was a mandatory team meeting where all players underwent a drug test, according to an arrest warrant.

"Ya, they caught us slipping," Brock told an undercover officer later that day before allegedly selling him $220 worth of marijuana.

He added that he had failed the surprise test "for sure," according to the warrant, then adding that he thought it wouldn't be a problem because there "would be about 60 people screwed."

Horn had looked through the football roster and "said there were only 20 people that would pass the test on the team," Brock said, according to the warrant. And asked about the drug test, Johnson allegedly told an undercover officer: "What can they do, 82 people failed it."

Patterson declined to comment beyond the statement released by the university.

Phone messages left at the homes of Horn, Johnson and Yendrey were not immediately returned. Brock did not have a listed home number.

Police said they had yet to determine if other football players were involved or would be charged. Chancellor Victor Boschini suggested the four players' involvement was not a sign of a larger issue.

"I don't think it's a football problem," Boschini said.

Officials said the students had been "separated from TCU," but it wasn't clear if the players had been kicked off the team.

"I expect our student-athletes to serve as ambassadors for the university and will not tolerate behavior that reflects poorly on TCU, the athletics department, our teams or other student-athletes within the department," athletic director Chris Del Conte said. "Our student-athletes are a microcosm of society and unfortunately that means some of our players reflect a culture that glorifies drugs and drug use. That mindset is not reflected by TCU nor will it be allowed within athletics."

Brock was the leading tackler for TCU as a sophomore during the 2010 season, when the Horned Frogs went 13-0, won the Rose Bowl and finished the year ranked No. 2. Brock started the season opener at Baylor last September, but aggravated a foot injury that required season-ending surgery.

As a freshman playing special teams against SMU in 2009, Brock gained some national attention with a highlight play. He lost his helmet and still threw a key block on a 71-yard punt return for a touchdown by Jeremy Kerley.

Yendrey started 12 of 13 games this past season, when he had 39 tackles and three sacks. Johnson played in all 13 games, starting the last eight, and had 47 tackles with 2 1/2 sacks.

Brock likely would have been a starter again in 2012. Yendrey, who also started five guys as a junior, and Johnson both were juniors last season and had another season of eligibility. Horn appeared in 10 games this past season, making one start. He played in eight games as a freshman.

"Under my watch, drugs and drug use by TCU's student-athletes will not be tolerated by me or any member of my coaching staff," Patterson said. "Our program is respected nationally for its strong ethics and for that reason the players arrested today were separated from TCU by the university. I believe strongly that young people's lives are more important than wins or losses.

He added: "At the end of the day, though, sometimes young people make poor choices. The Horned Frogs are bigger and stronger than those involved."

Apple, Greece pull Dow to worst 2012 showing

The Dow slid 97 points to close at 12780 as Greece slogged though bailout negotiations and Apple stock zigzagged wildly.

Stocks slumped Wednesday in one of their worst showings this year as Greece, slogging through negotiations with other countries over a bailout, once again cast a long shadow over the financial markets.

The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 97.33 points to close at 12,780.95. It was the worst one-day decline for the Dow this year, and the index narrowly avoided its first triple-digit loss for the year. The average was down as much as 125 points.

The Standard & Poor's 500 and the Nasdaq composite index climbed tentatively through the morning but gave up their gains by afternoon. The S&P fell 7.27 points to 1,343.23. The Nasdaq fell 16 points to 2,915.83.

The declines were broad, with nine of the 10 industry groups in the S&P recording losses. The only group that didn't was materials, which was flat. Only five of the 30 stocks in the Dow rose for the day, and just barely.

In a 3?-hour conference call with the finance ministers of the other 16 countries that use the euro, Greece offered assurances that it had found ?325 million in budget cuts in addition to harsh measures that it has already promised.

But in a sign of the distrust that has built during the European debt crisis, particularly among richer countries, a European official said Greece would need tighter oversight of its budget before it receives another bailout.

Greece needs the money before a big bond payment comes due March 20. A default would rattle the world financial system. For weeks, incremental movement in the Greek crisis has whipsawed U.S. stocks.

"Long story short, we long for the days when markets traded on fundamentals," said David Katz, principal at WeiserMazars Wealth Advisors. He thinks stock picks have been ruled by emotion, rather than clear-eyed examinations of companies' balance sheets, at least since the credit crunch in 2007 and the ensuing Great Recession.

"Just as quickly as you see the market pop up from one headline, then you see the downturn from another," Katz said. "It doesn't really have to be (big news). It's not even the meat of the story, it's the headline."

Greece makes up just 2 percent of the total economic output of the 17 countries that use the euro. But investors are troubled by the fallout from a potential default and similar financial problems festering in other European countries, like Portugal, Italy and Spain.

"There is no shortage of people who would argue that Greece is a non-event," said Dan McMahon, director of equity trading at Raymond James. "It's more that it's a barometer for the rest of the eurozone."

Stocks have risen steadily all year, so some analysts argued that a slowdown was inevitable. The S&P 500 ended 2011 at 1,258, and many analysts predicted it would end 2012 at 1,350. But it had already reached that level last week.

"When the market does in a few weeks what was expected for the year, it's natural for the market to sort of pause and pinch itself and say, 'Is this supposed to go on?'" said Brian Gendreau, market strategist for Cetera Financial Group.

"If it continued at the same pace for the rest of the year, that's just unrealistic. You'd need an unrelenting drumbeat of good news, and we haven't gotten that," Gendreau said.

The price of oil climbed to its highest level in five weeks after Iran said it would cut off some exports of crude to Europe. Iran was responding to the European Union's plans to embargo Iranian oil this summer, an attempt to pressure Iran to abandon its nuclear program. Benchmark U.S. crude rose $1.06 to end the day at $101.80 per barrel in New York.

The average retail price for a gallon of gas was $3.52. Gas prices are already the highest on record for this time of year, and economists fear that they could crimp the halting economic recovery. This time a year ago, gas was $3.12.

Apple stock went on a wild zigzag. It set an all-time high at midday, $526.29 per share, but fell sharply and closed down $11.79 at $497.67 after eight straight days of gains.

The decline appeared to be caused by rumors that the Nasdaq 100 index would adjust its components to give Apple, the biggest company in the world by market value, less weight. That would force mutual funds that track the Nasdaq 100 to sell Apple stock.

Those rumors may have been overblown. Nasdaq declined to comment on Apple but pointed out that it adjusts the index if a company's market value represents more than 24 percent of the index. Apple represented about 17 percent at the end of the day Wednesday.

The euro fell slightly against the dollar to just under $1.31. The euro had been mostly rising since mid-January, but topped out around $1.33 late last week.

The yield on the U.S. government's benchmark 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.93 percent from 1.94 percent. Yields fall and bond prices rise when investors decided to seek a haven for their money rather than take a bet on the stock market.

Among the biggest movers in the U.S. market:

? Comcast, the cable provider, climbed 5 percent after beating Wall Street expectations for profit and revenue. It managed to slow the loss of customers as it added channels and better customer service.

? Kellogg rose 5 percent after announcing it would buy Pringles from Procter & Gamble. Diamond Foods had a deal to buy Pringles but got caught up in an accounting scandal. P&G was flat, and Diamond was up 5 percent.

? Zynga, the maker of popular Facebook games like FarmVille, plummeted 18 percent after reporting it lost money in the fourth quarter. Zynga went public in December.

Spray-on Antenna Establishes Radio Communications Anywhere ...

on February 15, 2012Posted in: featured, technologyTags: duct tape, low power, nanotech, solve for x, spray-on antenna, wireless

A tree-antenna, a duct tape-antenna or an entire wall turned into a transmitting device. The nano spray-on antenna technology of Chamtech Enterprises can turn any surface into a wireless connectivity device. Transmitting a signal twice as far as a standard antenna or at half the power.

Anthony Sutera, CEO of Chamtech, presented his invention at Solve For X, a forum recently launched by Google encouraging people to come up with radical solutions backed by breakthrough technology to solve problems that affect the world [video below]. The challenge Sutera is tackling is to get a wireless signal anywhere.

Sutera explains that antenna technology hasn?t changed that much since Tesla and Marconi used a copper wire to transmit radio signals. But this technology isn?t very efficient because not all electricity is converted into radio waves, some of it is lost as heat. To boost the signal you need to apply more power.

Chamtech is leaving all this behind and gearing up for a paradigm shift in antenna technology.

The company developed a material consisting of thousands and thousands of nanocapacitors. When it is sprayed on a surface the capacitors form a pattern which allows the signal to flow. The capacitors charge and discharge extremely quickly without any heat loss. The signal hops from capacitor to capacitor until it reaches the surface and is launched into space.

As an experiment the material was sprayed onto a tree and used to transmit a signal. Not only did they create the first tree-antenna it also worked an order of a magnitude better than a standard antenna.

Then they stuck antenna-sprayed piece of duct tape to an airplane and established a microwave data link with the vehicle 14 miles overhead.

The low power spray-on antenna can aid in getting wireless access anywhere. By boosting signals in cities where buildings block reception and by playing a part in mesh networks to connect remote areas.

Ind. measles outbreak illustrates disease risk ? Artesia News

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Indiana is battling its second measles outbreak in two years, even though its vaccination rate exceeds the national average. Health officials say the cases, traced to a Super Bowl event, illustrate just how vulnerable the public is to exposure from sources at home and abroad.

The 13 cases confirmed this month by state health officials have been confined to two counties, Boone and Hamilton. But all cases are linked to two infected people who visited the Super Bowl Village together on Feb. 3, prompting Indiana officials to reach out to health departments in New York and Massachusetts ? home of the participating New England Patriots and New York Giants ? for fear that the outbreak could spread across state lines.

Concerns about a widespread outbreak are well-founded, said University of Minnesota professor Kristen Ehresmann, who was part of a research team that studied the disease?s spread across a large sporting event.

In 1991, a track and field runner from Argentina participating in the Special Olympics in Minneapolis unknowingly started an outbreak of measles, infecting spectators, athletes and event organizers.

?This was kind of Murphy?s Law of disease transmission, with a highly infectious disease in a very, very crowded place so as to spread the disease as much as possible,? Ehresmann said.

The Super Bowl setting has the same potential to spread the notoriously infectious disease, even though health officials in 2000 declared endemic measles ? cases of the disease that originated in the United States ? to be eliminated, due largely to increasing vaccination rates.

About 90 percent of all Americans are vaccinated against measles, said Dr. Greg Wallace of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And in Indiana, more than 92 percent of children ages 19 months to 35 months received the vaccine in 2010, the latest year for which figures are available.

But concerns over the vaccine?s safety ? widely dismissed by researchers as unfounded ? have led some parents to decide against immunizing their children. In 2005, an outbreak of 34 measles cases in Indiana were traced back to a group of parents who didn?t vaccinate their children, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

In other countries, vaccination rates are dropping, which raises the risk of exposure. The number of cases in Western Europe has particularly spiked, with France reporting the third-highest number of measles cases in the world. More than 750 people have contracted measles in an ongoing outbreak in Qu?bec, Canada, despite the country?s high immunization rate.

The U.S. typically sees about 50 cases of measles each year. But there were 223 cases in 2011 ? a 15-year high. Officials said the increase was due to Americans picking up the disease while abroad. Three-quarters of U.S. measles cases can be traced to importation, with the rest originating from contact with a visitor from another country, Wallace said.

Indiana?s outbreak has prompted state health officials to issue near-daily updates on the number of cases and places visited by those infected in hopes of stopping the disease?s spread. In Noblesville, where a suspected measles case has been reported, school officials have been cleaning classrooms and canceling evening activities. Spokeswoman Sharon Trisler said 98 percent of Noblesville students are immunized against the disease, and the rest are being asked to get the vaccine.

Wallace said health departments are typically able to control outbreaks as long as they catch them early, and doesn?t predict a large-scale resurgence of measles in Indiana so long as immunization rates remain steady.

Ehresmann hopes news reports of cases at the Super Bowl remind people that measles are dangerous and contagious.

?You never know when it?s possible to have an exposure,? she said. ?Who would think the Super Bowl would have any link or tie to the measles??
