APPT7 Seoul: Advice from the pros - PokerStarsBlog.net

The Seoul Capital Area is the second largest metropolitan area in the world.

With more than 25 million inhabitants, the area is home to more than half the population of South Korea. That's a lot of stomachs to feed. It's also a lot of mouths to fill with beer and soju.

The city's size can be a bit daunting to newcomers but luckily, there are a millions of people who know the city rather well. A few of them happen to be here at the APPT. Team PokerStars Pro Bryan Huang and several staff members of the APPT decided to share their knowledge about Seoul with players and readers.

"Having travelled to many places all over the world, I often get asked which is my favorite city," said Team PokerStars Pro Bryan Huang. "Seoul is right up there! It has everything, in my opinion, that a true city should have.

"Besides being the world's most wired city, many popular spots are open 24 hours a day I'm not only talking about fast food chains or small shops, but famous restaurants with full meals, popular clubs & bars and full shopping malls."

Huang is also a fan of food and drink, something Seoul has in abundance.

"My favorite experience is Korean BBQ. Yummy barbequed meats of various cuts and endless refills of 8-10 side dishes. Then you wash them down with traditional Korean drinks like Soju, Makkoli or my favorite, Bok Bun Ja."

APPT Team Pro Manager Dom Choi is also a fan of Seoul and BBQ.

"Seoul, I love this city," said Choi. "People in this city work hard and play even harder. Walk around anywhere in Gangnam, Sinsa-Dong, Apgujeong district and you can experience the best Seoul has to offer in dining, nightlife, shopping and people watching."

Choi has been around Seoul a lot and has found a routine that suits him.

"I like to start my evening with friends with a casual dinner. Nine times out of 10 we will end up at a 'Gogi jip' meaning meat house Korean BBQ. My favourite places are those that specialize in Korean beef 'Hanoo," said Choi. "To really taste the wicked flavour of hanoo, you should go where YOU char grill it. Yes, you get to grill your own fine meat at your table.

"For your first piece of beautifully marbled hanoo don't dip it in anything. Grill it then eat it and fall in love with one of the best tasting beef in the world. Order some soju and beer and try somek. One shot of soju in a half filled glass of Korean beer, shout 'Gunbeh' and empty that glass!"

Then it's time for round 2, or what Koreans call 2 Cha.

For 2 Cha I like going to a bar called 'The Flair Bar'. It offers get range of drinks, they specialize in flair bartenders making great cocktails that are affordable 7000-8000 KRW. They play variety of music from K-pop to club music.

"My friends and I usually get a table order our drinks, play drinking games that Koreans love to play. At this place we usually play team darts and sometimes the waiting staff will get it on the action. Great tasting affordable drinks, great music, great staff and great company. It's a pretty good chilling spot."

APPT Senior Regional Events Manager, Robin Lim, agrees about the Flair Bar, but has a different favourite Korean dish: Jimjak.

"This is my favourite Korean dish and unfortunately it is very difficult to come by outside of Korea, "Said Lim. " It has chicken, potatoes and noodles in a thick spicy soy-based sauce that's amazing!"

Lim is such a fan, he encourages everyone to try it and gave detailed instrunctions on how to get to his favorite place. From Exit 7 of the Gangnam Station, head north about 150m on Gangnamero and take the diagonal street, then first left & go past the Dubliner Pub, Bongchu Jjimdak should be on your left.

APPT President Danny McDonagh has come to Seoul a few times, but he remembers what it was like to be a new tourist.

"Take a Seoul City Map & Underground Metro Map from the W concierge," said McDonagh. "Plan your must see spots in advance and then take off. With little English lettering and little English spoken, it's a bit of a challenge.

"However, Seoul is a very safe city so this is a good way to get out of our comfort zone and experience Korean day to day life. Include Insadong as one of your later stops, a great place for traditional Korean art and crafts and the street food is renowned."

With Day 1B coming to a close and more than half the starting field eliminated, players can now take time to follow some of these delicious morsels of advice.
