Utah State University announced Friday an anonymous donor has given the athletics department its largest donation in history ? $4.5 million.
The donation, the school announced in a news release, will be used to help fund a new $6.2 million strength and conditioning center expected to be completed by the summer of 2013.
?We are extremely thankful for the generous and historic lead gift that has made this project possible,? said Scott Barnes, USU?s director of athletics. ?Their contribution to this project is a game changer for all our programs. The location, programming aspects and amenities of the new strength and conditioning center will serve as a huge recruiting opportunity for all sports.?
The 18,000-square-foot facility is planned for the northwest corner of Romney Stadium and will house areas for weight training, cardiovascular workouts and speed and agility training. It will also contain offices for staff.
The athletics department said it will help with overcrowding of the existing 5,800-square-foot facility, which serves about 400 athletes from 16 sports programs.
?Strength training and conditioning play a big part in allowing our student-athletes to compete at their best,? said Heather Cairns, USU?s head women?s soccer coach in a statement. ?The new strength and conditioning center will give our student-athletes a competitive edge. Increasing the size of the facility will also allow more flexibility in workout times for the student-athletes as they continue to balance their academic and athletic commitments.?
All funding for the facility will come from private donations.
Barnes said the school plans to work with its architect to consider adding a game-day apparel outlet on the east side of the building and a new game-day ticket outlet on the west side.
