In fact we enjoyed playing poker so much ?over there that we decided to organise our own poker night with friends. One of the dishes I made on the day is what my brother BT calls Bapu's bhajias and my friend VP calls packed bhajias. ? I have named them Spicy bombs as that's what Hansa called them in her recipe book. ? In her recipe, she adds whole chillies and gathia to the boiled potatoes but I decided against that. ?I decided to remove the seeds from ?chillies and blend them with sev noodles as I thought that this would blend better and make the bhajias tastier. ?I was in one of those dare devil moods after my trip to the USA and wanted to see which of my friends had the guts to eat these spicy delicacies. ? I was expecting to see a few red sweaty ?faces but surprisingly, all my friends enjoyed them and found them to taste OK after a few drinks.
Ingredients for enough bhajias for 3-4 people?
12-16 new baby potatoes
For the batter to dip the potatoes:
2 cups of chick pea flour (often called gram flour or besan)
1 teaspoon salt
? teaspoon of Ajwain
small bunch of? fresh coriander cut finely (can use coriander powder too)
Pinch of soda bi carbonate
For stuffing No 1:
1 cup sev?( you can buy ready made sev noodles in most Asian stores)
4-5 fresh green chillies (washed and blended)
1 tsp ground sugar
small bunch of finely chopped coriander
2-3 tbsps lemon juice
1 tbsp oil
For stuffing no 2
5-6 cloves of ?blended garlic
1 teaspoons salt
1 tablespoon chillypowder
? teaspoon of cumin powder
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 tbsp sesame seeds
1tbsp dessicated coconut
small bunch of finely chopped coriander
For the Deep Frying:
1 litre of cooking oil ( I always use sunflower oil)
Method for both the stuffings:
Prepare the potatoes as below:?
1. Steam the baby potatoes with the skin on. I suggest steaming rather than boiling as you do not want the potatoes to over cook and break.
2. Once cooked, allow to cool and peel the skin from the potatoes.
?Prepare the stuffing No 1 (ingredients for 10-12 baby potatoes):
1. ?Crush the sev using your hands and mix all the ingredients listed under stuffing No 1 above in a bowl and leave for 20 minutes.
2. Add salt and 1 teaspoon of lemon to the garlic to make the blending easier.
3. Remove the blended mixture to a mixing bowl and add the chilly powder and cumin powder to it
4.??Add the finely chopped coriander , dessicated coconut and ?sesame seeds to the mixture.
5. ?This mixture should resemble a firm paste.
Prepare the chick pea flour batter to dip your potatoes in:
1. Add one cup of water to the Chick pea flour and mix well. ?You may need to add half ?cup more to get the right thickness of the batter.
2. Add the salt, ajwain, fresh coriander and stir well.
3. The mixture should be fairly thick as shown in my picture.4.? Allow this to rest whilst you heat the oil.
1. Cut the potatoes across - but only half way? on one side; turn to the opposite side and cut the potato across half way again.
2. ?The stuffing with the sev should now be soft and?manageable?to use. If it feels too dry, sprinkle a couple of drops of water to moisten it.
? To finish making the bhajias:
1. To check if the oil is hot, drop a small drop of batter into the oil. If the oil is ready, the batter will rise to the top.
2. Turn the heat slightly low now.
3. Add a pinch of soda by carbonate to the chick pea mixture and stir.
3. Take one potato at a time; using a spoon, dip it in the chick pea flour mixture and transfer it to the oil -using a knife or a chopstick .
5. Once they look golden yellow, they are cooked and ready to serve with any chilly sauce.?

Whether you?re trying to increase your home?s value or simply beautify the place a tiny bit via a few needed improvements, you should know that there?s a lot more that can go wrong than can go right. that is the nature of home improvement. You need real skills to be an actual carpenter. Even the regular handyman can use some advice from time to time. These tips, then, can be very important.
Make sure to wage sufficient lighting when designing your new or updated bathroom. Sometimes people concentrate on bathroom fixtures during a remodel, and they tend to overlook the importance of proper lighting. Put lights around your medicine cabinets and mirrors, or place in ceiling lights with easily replaceable bulbs.
It is inevitable that chair cushions will flatten with use. To restore them, place the cushions outside in the sun. Sunlight dries up excess moisture and restores the springiness. Be sure to flip over the cushions, and don?t just leave them out in the sun because the colors can fade.
When you can stay at home as you make changes, you?ll save money. You can begin by doing a single room at once. This will keep things bearable, as long as you have more than one bathroom. If this applies to you, stay with your friends in the meantime.
Do you want to do some home improvements that are cheap and will still increase the value of your home. Form some rock walls to increase visual appeal. The rocks aren?t pricey at all, as you can find them yourself for free! Once you have your rocks, you can create your own design or use one of the ready prefabricated designs you can easily find online.
When it comes to home improvements, make sure you realize just how long some things last. For example, a new stone or brick chimney can wage 100 years or more of use. However, a deck prefabricated of wood might last only 15 years. Vinyl floors will last twenty or more years but oak lasts around a 100. Think about all of these things as you plan a renovation, to determine if the money and energy you place out is worthwhile.
Protect your carpeting by keeping your drapes shut on very sunny days. The sun?s rays can actually lighten your carpet and cause hideous fading. Open your drapes whenever the sun isn?t directly in the line of site.
When you seek out expert advice, your home renovations will be more profitable. They will know the areas of improvement that will increase profit the most and give you recommendations on what should be changed.
When replacing a floor, think about using vinyl to save money. Vinyl is durable, strong, and water resistant, and comes with an adhesive backing that makes installation a breeze. Vinyl is acquirable in many sizes and materials, so it is simple to buy just enough for a small or massive area.
A home improvement project does not have to be hard to do. It might even be easier than you thought. But you can do a lot of harm unless you really know how to accomplish them. Use the tips found here to help you decide how to move forward on your own projects. Utilize this to benefit yourself.

President Obama made a smart move by going on the Late Show with David Letterman, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel could benefit from something similar? if only she could pull it off.
By Rieke Havertz,?Contributor / September 19, 2012
EnlargeThanks to a heads up from the local news last night, I got to watch President Barack Obama on the "Late Show with David Letterman." I figured if it was big enough to make the nightly news I should watch, but I didn't expect much more than staged jokes, dull conversation, and campaign messaging.

But after the initial chitchat ended ? and President Obama had the audience on his side after cracking a joke about not wanting to see host David Letterman naked ? I understood why the president went on air with the late night host. I also wondered whether it was something German Chancellor Angela Merkel should consider when running for re-election next year.
The setting is perfect: It's free television time on a national level and gives the incumbent a big platform for presenting both his ideas and his personality. I didn't expect Mr. Letterman to let Obama talk about the national debt for more than three minutes, let alone the gridlock in Congress for almost four, but that's what he did.
For Obama it was a way to reach voters who might not be interested enough in politics to follow election coverage closely but enjoy their late night talk shows. His choice of words might have been simple ? referring to "two wars on a credit card" when talking about the national debt ? but his message, peppered as it was with stories about his children and the White House garden, stuck.
Germany has already adopted the US debate culture, so why not appear on talk shows too? Former Chancellor Gerhard Schr?der tried that when he appeared on the popular evening game show "Wetten, dass...?" ("Wanna bet this...?) in 1999, but it didn't really catch on with other politicians. Last year Chancellor Merkel turned down an offer to appear on the show, which was hosted by the popular Thomas Gottschalk until the end of last season.
Maybe it's because Merkel is not quite the hip politician Obama is and likes to keep her personal life private. But even though German elections are never as personality-driven as they are in the US, the candidates still need to appeal to voters, and this is an ideal way to do that.?
Take former Minister of Defense Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, who stepped down in 2011 after the disclosure that he had plagiarized his doctoral thesis. Even in the middle of that controversy, he remained one of the most popular politicians in Germany, partly because he knew how to spin the headlines with well-crafted appearances, showing up in an AC/DC T-shirt at a concert or getting his picture taken at tourist hub Times Square on a trip to the US.
Even if Merkel does not want to trade personal stories with Letterman like Obama did, appearing on a carefully chosen entertainment TV show and sharing just a little bit of about her personal life while going long on economic policy and government spending could be an easy way to get the message out to the average Joe ? or in this case, Otto Normalverbraucher.
Rumors are that Mr. Gottschalk is planning a comeback with a show airing on public broadcaster ARD. That could be a nice match.

The location-based photo startup famously received $41 million in funding, but there has been some trouble lately.
Nguyen has "completely stepped away from his day-to-day duties" at the company and hasn't been seen at the headquarters in two months.
There are unconfirmed rumors that he's even sold his home in Silicon Valley and has taken up residence "either in Tahoe or Hawaii."
TechCrunch was able to get Nguyen on the phone as he was boarding a plane to Maui.
?I do this historically," he said. "I take off for a little while and I vacation. It?s nothing new or exciting. The roles of founders and CEOs is to get everyone engaged and give opportunities to people. And when things haven?t worked out as expected, the best way for me to recharge is to go on sabbatical.?
Nguyen also acknowledged that other board members are less than pleased that he's maintained the title of CEO while off the map, and the issue will be discussed at the next board meeting.
However, Nguyen explained that he'll not appear at the meeting in person ? "I?m going to have to call in, because I?ll be in Maui.?

Look who's talking now ? John Travolta!
And he's saying whatever the heck he wants after a judge ruled the Saturday Night Fever star was well within his 1st Amendment right to talk smack about a dude who wrote a disparaging book.
Robert Randolph claimed JT was a gay bath house super-fan in his book You'll Never Spa in This Town Again.
The actor dismissed those claims in a statement suggesting the author was mentally unbalanced so Robert filed a civil action against him for libel!
But the judge sided with Mizter Travolta!!
Good for you, Johnny boy!

In what could be a breakthrough in the treatment of deadly brain tumors, a team of researchers from Barrow Neurological Institute and Arizona State University has discovered that the immune system reacts differently to different types of brain tissue, shedding light on why cancerous brain tumors are so difficult to treat. The large, two-part study, led by Barrow research fellow Sergiy Kushchayev, MD under the guidance of Dr. Mark Preul, Director of Neurosurgery Research, was published in the Sept. 14 issue of Cancer Management and Research. The study explores the effects of immunotherapy on malignant gliomas, cancerous brain tumors that typically have a poor prognosis.
What the researchers discovered was that immune cells of the brain and of the blood exhibit massive rearrangements when interacting with a malignant glioma under treatment. Essentially, the study demonstrates that the complex immune system reacts differently in different brain tissues and different regions of the brain, including tumors.
?This is the first time that researchers have conducted a regional tissue study of the brain and a malignant glioma to show that these immune cells do not aggregate or behave in the same way in their respective areas of the brain,? says Dr. Preul.?
"This means that effective treatment in one area of the brain may not be effective in another area. In fact, it could even cause other regions of the tumor to become worse.?
The results of the study provide important insight into why clinical trials involving immunotherapies on glioma patients may not be working.

We want to feel safe where we live. Therefore we naturally inquire when we visit a potential rental home, condo or apartment, ?How safe is it here?? What seems unnatural is when the answer to this inquiry is less than straightforward and even seems evasive. It can sound like there?s some awful secret that no one wants to reveal.
Consider these facts when confronted with this situation:
- Making such statements as, ?I live here and have never had a problem?, or ?This is a very safe place to live?, can be legally construed to create a false sense of security in the minds of existing and potential residents because this representative should know and therefore speaks as an authority.
- There have been legal references to such statements as a guarantee of personal safety when a resident has suffered a theft or worse. In some cases these references have sufficiently attached financial liability for a variety of incidences to the ownership and or management of the property. Examples include: burglary, break-in, theft, property loss or damage, harassment, assault and rape.
- As a consequence every rental owner is wary and every real estate professional has been trained to avoid such statements. ?Security? is a term that is generally absent from any advertising or presentation.
- In addition, common sense tells us that ?personal safety? is often a very subjective attitude. This attitude can govern routines and habits that might seem ?risky? or ?unnecessarily cautious? to others.
We might feel better with the assurances of an eager leasing specialist or a rental owner /manager that are comfortable due to daily contact with the property circumstances. However, logic dictates that no one can or should try to replace our personal perceptions of security with their own.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? It was an odd assignment for the young, pretty staffer when she was ordered to go along on a trip to Atlantic City with her boss. But the reason soon became clear.
She said she spent much of the trip struggling to fend off the advances and kisses of 72-year-old Brooklyn Assemblyman Vito Lopez. He was persistent, she said, and eventually put his hand between her legs.
She and another female staffer said it was part of a regular routine of office harassment that included inappropriate touching and comments about their bodies, how they dressed and even how they were getting along with their boyfriends. They said the job included writing letters to Lopez about how much they loved their jobs ? letters Lopez complained were "insufficiently effusive," according to his official censure.
The accusations that emerged over the summer are hardly unusual in a state capital, especially Albany, which has such a rich history of sexual misconduct by lawmakers that it has its own, unwritten Las Vegas-like code: What happens north of Bear Mountain stays there.
But what began as a relatively modest scandal has pierced the veil of the so-called Bear Mountain Compact, unraveling in public before a state ethics committee, revealing more sexual misconduct accusations against Lopez and a secret six-figure payoff to the accusers with taxpayer money that was approved by one of the most powerful lawmakers in the state.
That lawmaker, Democratic Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, was initially singed by the scandal, with some political opponents calling for his resignation. A special prosecutor is investigating whether crimes were committed, and a wide-ranging probe by the state's nascent ethics watchdog is exploring the roles played by other powerful Democrats, including the attorney general and comptroller.
How effectively the Joint Commission on Public Ethics handles the politically charged case will reflect on the man who created it as part of his campaign promise to "clean up" Albany: Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo, long considered a possible presidential candidate in 2016.
"You will always find situations where people do things wrong," Cuomo said. "You will always find situations where people in power make mistakes, or abuse their power, or abuse their authority, or are corrupt or venal."
"The question becomes when people make a mistake, or when a bad thing is done, what is the response?"
In the case of Lopez, a longtime Democratic dealmaker who was lampooned in New York City tabloid headlines as "King Leer" and "Gropez," the allegations that emerged over the summer were found credible by New York's Assembly ethics committee. The panel censured him Aug. 24, and Silver stripped Lopez of seniority perks and power.
The censure revealed a previously unknown set of accusations against Lopez made in June that were settled secretly with $103,000 in public money approved by Silver. That deal was crafted with input from lawyers with the attorney general's and comptroller's offices.
Lopez, who has called the scandal an "onslaught of character attacks," said: "I have never sexually harassed any staff, and I hope and intend to prove in the coming months the political nature of these accusations."
Cuomo is the third governor in a row to try to put more teeth in ethics oversight. Four years before Cuomo took office, Democrat Eliot Spitzer created his own ethics board to sanitize Albany, only to resign amid charges he solicited prostitutes. His Democratic successor, David Paterson, was forced to admit on just his second day in office that he had affairs with a "number of women" while a state senator.
Such clashes of sex and power have become part of the lore of Albany, where a cluster of taverns a short walk from the Capitol had for years featured a loud mix of pols and young staffers mingling over scotch and steaks. In the 1990s, the New York Post's front page declared Albany "Sin City."
And a decade ago, the Albany County district attorney investigating claims of sexual harassment and rape in the Capitol put it this way: "Any father who would let his daughter be an intern in the state Legislature should have his head examined."
After the initial flurry, Silver appears to have blunted any serious threat to his power from this scandal.
Silver, a 69-year-old lawyer from Manhattan, is one of Albany's most powerful, little-understood and private of figures, called "the Sphinx" by some for his ability to prevail in budgets and policy.
A renowned political strategist, he may even have strengthened his position by making sexual harassment harder to get away with. By publicly admitting he was wrong to seal the case with a confidentiality agreement and promising not to do any others, he issued a strong early warning to lawmakers.
Democratic Assemblyman John McEneny says the Lopez case has already struck back at sexual harassment, just as previous reforms to the legislative intern program addressed some of the barhopping and relationships with young ? usually female ? staffers.
"Individually, there will always be a problem as long as there are human beings," said McEneny, a member of the Assembly ethics committee. "But institutionally, we tend to take steps to make sure it doesn't happen again."

Myth # 1
Federal income tax is unconstitutional and you can therefore refuse to pay income tax to the federal government, as confirmed by the Supreme Court of Canada in a decision in 1950.
The Facts
This myth is based on the faulty argument that the Canadian Constitution gives the power of direct taxation exclusively to the provinces. Section 91 of the Constitution says the federal government can raise money "by any mode or system of taxation." Section 92 says the provinces can impose "direct taxes within a province" to raise revenue for provincial purposes. As a result, while federal and provincial taxing powers overlap, the federal government can levy?both?indirect and direct taxes, including income tax.
The courts have confirmed the power of the federal government to levy direct taxes including income tax.?No court in Canada has ever agreed with the idea that the federal government cannot levy income taxes.?The often-cited 1950 Supreme Court decision concerning the Lord Nelson Hotel in Nova Scotia dealt with the issue of whether the federal government and a provincial government could delegate authority to each other on specific issues of labour and taxation. The Court did not address the issue of imposing direct taxes or their constitutionality.
In Canada, if citizens feel a law is unconstitutional, they may ask the courts to declare it so. Until that happens, the law applies.
A number of individuals and groups are actively promoting claims that there are lawful ways to declare oneself exempt from tax. Relying on such "advice" could result in action from late-filing penalties and interest imposed by the CRA to fines and imprisonment imposed by the courts -- in addition to having to pay your taxes.
Before paying for such information or participating in such groups, seek advice from a trusted and knowledgeable tax professional or the CRA.
Myth # 2
The income tax system is based on voluntary compliance because the government knows tax laws are unconstitutional and cannot be enforced.
The Facts
There is no question that voluntary compliance is the cornerstone of Canada's self-assessment taxation system. This simply means that the government expects you to respect the law and comply fully with your tax obligations.
This approach?does not?imply that the law cannot be enforced if necessary. The?Income Tax Act?and other laws provide a range of penalties for offences such as tax evasion, failure to pay taxes, failure to disclose income, or refusing to file a tax return. These penalties can include fines, third-party claims, seizures, and criminal prosecution.
On the other hand the?Voluntary Disclosures Program (VDP)?provides taxpayers with the opportunity to come forward and make a voluntary disclosure before they become aware of any compliance action being initiated against them. Taxpayers availing themselves of the VDP will have to pay the taxes owing, plus interest, but may avoid penalties or prosecution.
Myth # 3
Some individuals claim that they have not filed a tax return in years and that the government has not been capable of forcing them to file a tax return because theIncome Tax Act?is unconstitutional and unenforceable.
The Facts
The CRA cannot respond directly to such claims because the confidentiality provisions of the?Income Tax?Act?prevent government officials from revealing information about individual taxpayers. We can only encourage the public to be wary of such claims. Individuals may have in fact filed in past years, or been fined for failing to file. In other cases, the CRA may not?yet?have acted against an individual who did not comply with their obligation to file.
In some cases, an individual may not be required to file a tax return because they have no taxes owing due to source deductions or because they have no taxable income. However, failing to file a tax return also means an individual may be forfeiting some benefits such the Canada Child Tax Benefit.
Under the law, individuals who fail to file a return as required, or who fail to comply with a court order to file, are liable to a fine of $1,000 to $25,000 and up to 12?months imprisonment, as well as having to pay their unpaid taxes with interest.
The CRA devotes significant resources to providing the information and assistance required by the majority of Canadians who accept their tax obligations and comply with the law. Audit, prosecution, and other enforcement activities are carefully targeted on the small minority of taxpayers who attempt to evade their obligations.
In the 2008-2009 fiscal year, the CRA prosecuted 1,124?individuals for failing to file a tax return and successfully prosecuted 323?cases involving income tax evasion or fraud.
The CRA receives leads from more than 24,000?taxpayers each year, some of which result in enforcement actions. If you know someone who is not meeting his or her tax obligations, you can contact the CRA's Informant Leads Program. More information on this program is available on our Web site at?www.cra.gc.ca/leads.
For more information about the CRA's enforcement activities, visit?www.cra.gc.ca/alert/
Myth # 4
You can force the CRA to lower or even eliminate taxes by refusing to co-operate with its employees.
The Facts
The CRA administers and enforces tax laws as passed by Parliament and provincial legislative assemblies. The CRA has no power to impose new taxes, remove existing taxes, raise or lower taxes, or decide how tax money will be spent once it is collected. These powers belong to the elected representatives of the Canadian people in Parliament and in provincial legislative assemblies.
Under our parliamentary system, federal tax policy is developed by the Department of Finance under the direction of the Minister of Finance. Tax measures are put before Parliament in the form of legislation. Any changes in taxation must be passed by the House of Commons and by the Senate in order to become law. The CRA also collects some taxes imposed by the provinces under laws passed by provincial legislative assemblies.
The CRA and its employees are subject to the law. If you feel the CRA has failed to respect your rights or has acted without authority, you have a right to redress through the courts.
Myth # 5
The Income Tax Act applies only to corporate entities and not to "natural" persons or human beings. The Common Law rights dating back to the Magna Carta make all taxes on individuals voluntary.
The Facts
These myths have been rejected by Canada's courts. For example, on August?31, 2000, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice issued a?ruling?rejecting arguments that the?Income Tax Act?applies only to corporate entities and that all taxes are voluntary.
The judge said, "I find that a 'person' as defined in s. 248(l) of the?Income Tax Actincludes both a natural person and an artificial person. It follows that the applicant is a 'person' and a 'taxpayer.' ??His obligations include the filing of annual income tax returns and the payment of any income tax owing under his returns."
The judge said, "In my view, there is no support in 'the common law, (also known as) the rule of law' for the extremely broad proposition that all taxes are voluntary."
A number of individuals and groups are actively promoting claims that there are lawful ways to declare oneself exempt from tax. Relying on such "advice" could result in anything from late-filing penalties and interest imposed by the CRA to fines and imprisonment imposed by the courts -- in addition to having to pay your taxes.
Before paying for such information, or participating in such groups, seek advice from a trusted and knowledgeable tax professional or the CRA.
Myth # 6
Some individuals claim to be exempt from GST/HST. Some carry a card to "prove" their claim.
The Facts
GST/HST legislation does not provide tax exemptions for any individuals, and any card claiming such an exemption is a fraud. However, individuals with Indian status under theIndian Act?may not be required to pay GST/HST on the purchase of goods and services under certain conditions. (For details, see Publication?B-039 GST/HST administrative policy - Application of the GST/HST to Indians.)
Some consumers think that falsely claiming an "exemption" is an effective protest against taxes or a government. In fact, any resulting discount they receive is at the expense of the vendor. Vendors must remit tax on all taxable transactions, even if they have mistakenly failed to collect the GST/HST from an individual falsely claiming an exemption.
You may sometimes be led to believe that you are not paying GST/HST because a vendor may promote a sale by advertising "Pay no GST" or other similar claims. The vendor in these cases discounts the price so that the final, tax-inclusive cost is the same as the advertised, pre-tax price.
Myth #7
You can make tax-free withdrawals from your self-directed RRSP.
The Facts
If you use your?registered retirement savings plan?(RRSP) as security for a loan, the value of the RRSP will be added to your taxable income. Similarly, if you use your RRSP to purchase shares of a private corporation, and the shares are not a?qualified investmentunder the rules, then the value of the shares will be added to your taxable income.
Some promoters of financing schemes may promise you that they can make tax-free withdrawals from your RRSPs. Typically, the arrangement involves using your self-directed RRSP to purchase shares of a private company. The funds used to purchase the shares are then loaned back to you at low or no interest.
These schemes are often promoted with claims such as,?"Take advantage of your RRSP now -- no tax to pay,"?or?"I will loan you $5,000 to $250,000 over five years if your RRSP is locked in."?If you respond to these kinds of advertisements, you risk losing your retirement savings and the tax benefits of the RRSP.
You should always consult with a trusted and knowledgeable tax advisor before taking part in any scheme that promises a tax-free withdrawal of RRSP funds. Administrators and trustees are asked to advise clients that there may be tax consequences if non-qualified investments or loans are secured with an RRSP.
Myth #8
The CRA uses email to conduct "e-audits."
The Facts
The CRA has been made aware of what appears to be an email audit scam currently going on in the United States. Although the CRA is not aware of any confirmed cases of such scams in Canada, we would like to alert Canadians to act prudently should they receive a similar email.
Here's how a similar scam might work in Canada: A taxpayer would receive an email using "Canada Revenue Agency e-audit" as the subject line, giving the appearance that it was sent by the CRA. The recipient/taxpayer would be instructed to fill out a questionnaire and return it within 48 hours to avoid penalties and interest. The fraudulent questionnaire would require the taxpayer to provide his or her social insurance number, bank account numbers, and other confidential information. Once the scam artist has this confidential information, the taxpayer is a potential victim of fraudulent activities.
The CRA does not notify taxpayers about pending audits by email, nor does it conduct "e-audits." Taxpayers should never respond to a request for confidential information without first confirming the identity of the requestor and assuring themselves that the requestor is legally permitted to request such information.
The CRA is committed to safeguarding the confidentiality of all taxpayer information. Because the Internet is not a secure medium of communication, the CRA does not use it to communicate with clients unless the taxpayer has first provided permission.
Myth #9
Winners of sweepstakes and lotteries in Canada have to pay fees and taxes to the CRA before claiming their prize.
The Facts
You do not have to pay the CRA any taxes or fees of any kind on lottery and sweepstakes winnings in Canada. Any unsolicited email, letter, or phone call telling you otherwise is a scam. Do not, under any circumstances, send money to someone making such a pitch to you. Instead, immediately contact your local police department or the?Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
You should never respond to a request for funds or confidential information without first confirming the identity of the requestor and assuring yourself that the requestor is legally permitted to make such a request.
The CRA is committed to safeguarding the confidentiality of all taxpayer information. Because of certain security concerns, the CRA does not use the Internet to communicate with clients unless you have first provided permission to do so.

I?ve been asked a version of the same question several times in the last few months.
?How do I get recognized as an authority and have people want to work with me on projects or ideas that make me excited??
I?m hardly the last line of expertise on this question, but there?s definitely some stuff I?ve learned and observed ? some of it the hard way and personally ? about putting it out there, about getting yourself in a place where you can take advantage of the good stuff when it comes along, and what separates the ?always seem to be doing the cool stuff? people from the ?WTF, why is that not ME? crowd.
You cannot ? I repeat, cannot ? get approached for awesome things until someone really understands what you do and stand for.
I work in social business strategy and organizational change. I also have experience in community management and building social media teams. I have written (loudly) about these things for almost five years now, and while I?ve occasionally shifted around a bit and evolved my perspective, the themes are consistent. You can go to my ?About? or ?Speaking? pages here on BTT and know immediately what I focus on and what my experience entails. If you go visit our SideraWorks website, social business is front and center.
Which means when someone needs an authority on incredible content marketing, they call Ann Handley or C.C. Chapman, not me. When they need advice on persuasive copywriting and blogging, they call Brian Clark or Sonia Simone. When they need input on being an entrepreneur, they might call Jonathan Fields. If they need to understand how to use visual thinking and Gamestorming to clarify ideas, they?re going to call Dave Gray.
But if there?s a project that has ties to the shifts in business as a result of the social web and all of the changes that entails, they just might call me. Because at least professionally, I?ve made that my crusade.
Did I mention the part about having a consistent thread throughout my stuff for the last five years? Not months. Not weeks. YEARS.
I blog about it, in two places (though I?m hardly the machine that other people are in that regard). I wrote a book with Jay Baer about it. I speak about it. I write some more. I had an amazing job doing it for a real, honest living, and then I built a business around it.
I didn?t start out having all kinds of street cred. In fact, I had anything but. But one element of building that credibility was consistently exploring, learning, talking, listening, and plugging away at these topics even when no one was really listening. This kind of thing is a low, slow cook over time. It?s not a big, flashy sudden rush-the-stage kind of deal.
Your theme may be easier or harder to find. My brilliant friend Pam Slim has been talking a lot about finding the through-line in your body of work, the thing that hooks it all together even if your career and experiences have been all over the place. There is a theme, I promise. It just might take some work to dig it out. But it?s worth it.
The biggest favor you can do for yourself is not just to find it, but to continuously and consistently put it out there. Steady and patient wins the race. It really does.
Please believe in something.
You can always change your mind. Evolve your point of view. Change your perspective or advance it or shape it more carefully to reflect your experience and values of the moment. The beauty of the web ? and humanity as a whole ? is that we are not static.
But for the love of all that?s holy,?have the courage to have a perspective.
If you want to be a ?thought leader? or an expert or an authority or even a respected professional, you can?t do that by walking down the middle of the road and hoping that you won?t piss anyone off, or that your ideas aren?t good enough, or that you don?t have what it takes to play alongside the big kids.
You don?t need to be a bitch like I am, but you do need to stand for something. You need to be audacious. And even if you feel ? like many of us do, often, including me ? like you?re vamping your way through the music, play. Pretending and ?faking it?, in many ways, is preparation for the reality of our futures. Do it, believe it, and own it.
People notice. And they want to work with someone who?believes.
Quit ?building your network?.
Much like our obsession over fans and followers and traffic and subscribers and all kinds of meaningless, empty numbers, we crow on about ?building our network? as if amassing nodes on the mesh were enough by itself to do anything meaningful. I?ve had one too many ?Hello, My Name Is? tags and bad canapes to tell you that people spend?millions of dollars every year going to networking events, collecting business cards, and playing the numbers shuffle like a sad, desperate business dating game.
I?ll concede that if you have a network of a million people, your odds of finding someone valuable in that mass statistically and numerically increase. More or less.
But whether or not you believe in Dunbar?s Number, we each have a cognitive, physical, and temporal limitation to how many people and relationships we can maintain with any level of quality over time.
So we must?learn to identify relationships that carry mutual value, and nurture them. Note I said mutual, which necessarily means that you both recognize, appreciate, and are willing to invest in the potential of the relationship (which is not the same as you seeing our relationship as potentially valuable and me not quite seeing it the same way, which I would like to explain to many networking gurus and LinkedIn abusers, but I digress).
I would rather have 50 amazing, fruitful and long-lasting connections any day beneath which I really know and understand the humans than thousands that afford me little more than an email address and the promise of a desperate email someday.
Investment is for tomorrow, for someday, for a time that is not right now. Learn how to do it with people as well as you would like to do it with your bank account. Those are the relationships that end up paying dividends in the long term. It?s not the answer that most people want, but it?s the only one that?s true.
When all else fails, pivot.
There?s something to be said for putting out unfinished ideas and subjecting them to critique before they?re baked. You have to be willing to iterate and adapt, which often means starting before you?re ready to start.
You?ve also got to be willing to make quick decisions about immediate opportunities that may not look like you thought they would. Sometimes, that means listening to a persistent theme that keeps cropping up that?s not exactly where you intended to focus, but yet there it is. Sometimes it?s saying ?yes? to a project that isn?t even fully baked, but that makes you scream HELL YEAH at the top of your lungs (and of course, no I?ve never done that, ever, in the middle of my living room. Nope. Not me.)
Sometimes it?s changing your entire business model on a dime because something moved, and you know it, and you can?t help but respond.
Darwin had it right. Those that survive and thrive aren?t just the ones that are stronger, but the ones most willing and able to adapt to the environment around them.
Half the battle is having great ideas. The other half is being willing to adjust when a great idea finds you.
These aren?t tactical things, like how to grow your email list or find prospects or approach partners. I realize this. But honestly, it?s the best advice I have. Because you can have all the tactical awesomeness in the world, but without the stuff above, they?ll all fall flat on their face.
If you?re in the fortunate position to be working on things that you love and enjoy, please share your experiences. If you get to collaborate with the best and the brightest, tell us what you think are the important things about getting to that point. There are many people lurking and reading that want to know what you did to get there. And this isn?t the time to be humble. You know if people have asked you how you got the projects you have, so for once I?m giving you permission to talk about your amazing work and (I hope I don?t regret this) share a link to some knowledge you?ve dropped about that.
If you?re the one who?s sitting there wondering why it isn?t you with the book deal or the byline or the partnership that you really want, talk to us in the comments and tell us what you think might be holding you back. Ask the hard questions. Put the insecurities and the fears out here, now, today. We have an experienced and diverse community here, so let?s all have a chat and see how we can help each other.
Are you in?

Right from launch day we'd heard early October would be the release timeframe for Motorola's new RAZR i. Now, at least one British retailer has narrowed that down further, and confirmed the device will begin shipping on October 1.
Clove Technology are set to receive stocks of the device imminently, and have taken to their official blog to confirm that they will be shipping the new Intel powered RAZR i this coming Monday. At £342 we still feel it's a little on the pricey side, but there is a lot to like. It sets the ball rolling in the Motorola/Intel partnership and we're excited to see where things go from here.
If you're interested in purchasing a RAZR i, be sure to check out our full review first, before parting with your hard earned.

LONDON (AP) ? A British court issued an interim injunction Wednesday blocking the extradition of a radical cleric to the United States on terror charges, granting a court hearing for an appeal.
Mustafa Kamal Mustafa ? who is better known as Abu Hamza al-Masri ? challenged his extradition on charges that include helping set up a terrorist training camp in rural Oregon. The appeal marked yet another legal twist in a case that has wound its way through the courts for eight years.
Khaled Al-Fawwaz, a second terror suspect, has also mounted a legal challenge before Britain's High Court.
Britain's Home Office immediately challenged the appeals.
Judicial authorities said in a statement that a hearing would be held Tuesday to consider the two men's applications. Sonn Macmillan Walker, a London law firm representing al-Masri, declined to provide details "given the sensitive nature of this matter."
The grounds of al-Masri's appeal were not immediately clear, but it was certain to stoke an ongoing debate in Britain about extradition laws. Critics have charged that the country's laws allow litigants to drag out their cases for years.
Lawyer Karen Todner, an extradition specialist, said the men would have to show the judge evidence of a new argument that had not been previously considered.
"They could only have gone back to court on a new matter that wasn't apparent before, such as a new health situation," she said.
The appeals follow a European court decision Monday that was believed to have cleared the way for the cleric's extradition and that of four other suspects after an eight-year legal battle.
The Egyptian-born former nightclub bouncer, who claimed he lost his eye and hands fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan, used north London's Finsbury Park Mosque as a base to persuade young Muslims to take up the cause of holy war. The mosque was once attended by Sept. 11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui and "shoe bomber" Richard Reid.
After the Sept. 11 terror attacks, the cleric praised Osama bin Laden and declared "many people will be happy, jumping up and down at this moment." He is wanted in the U.S. on multiple terrorism-related charges, including assisting in the taking of 16 hostages ? including two American tourists ? in Yemen in 1998 and conspiring to set up a terrorist training camp in Bly, Oregon, between 2000 and 2001.
He is serving a jail sentence in Britain on separate charges of inciting hatred.

PRLog (Press Release) - Sep 25, 2012 -Stack likens the phenomenon to Billy Crystal?s iconic ?Fernando?
According to Stack, Fernando captured the nonsensical ?style over substance? attitude that doesn?t work for very long if results aren?t being delivered.
In fact, Stack says that beyond a certain basic level, style doesn?t matter one bit if no results are delivered at the end of the day. ?
?If you let style dominate your thinking, you?ll eventually be revealed as the hollow shell you are and may very well find yourself on an express elevator to the ground floor,? Stack says. ?Even in the fashion industry where style seems to reign supreme, only results really matter.?
Stack says that only a laser-like focus on maximizing workplace productivity is going to guarantee the results that matter. Rather than wasting time developing a competent disguise, Stack tells readers to hone their time management skills, improve their abilities to block distractions, and prioritize task lists and schedules.
?Sure, you need to look and act professional at all times and present a personable front,? Stack says. ?But it?s more important to do everything humanly possible to meet and ideally beat your deadlines and serve up the best-quality results you can.
?Even when the final goal seems near at hand, don?t slow down! Instead, accelerate! Refuse to slack off until you?ve passed your goal.?
Stack advises those in management positions to lead with authority. A results-oriented attitude becomes even more essential to those responsible for an entire team?s results.
?Lead by example, working harder and more efficiently yourself,? Stack says. ?Nothing stimulates performance and drives team results like confidence and exuberance on the part of the leadership.?
Stack reinforces an ?honesty is the best policy? management approach. Leaders should strive to keep employees in the loop regarding company goals and the team?s role in moving the strategy forward. When milestones are reached, Stack encourages management to celebrate with staff.
?If you reward your people (and yourself) for performance, then you?re all more likely to produce the results you need, guaranteeing you avoid the bugbear of emphasizing style at the expense of substance,? Stack says.
?I?m not saying you can?t spice up your work with your own distinctive style and flair, but that can only take you so far, because spice alone doesn?t make a meal.?
Without the accompanying substance of productive results, Stack says style becomes no more than empty calories, leaving a bad taste in the mouths of everyone involved.
