To say the current job market is anything but a disaster would be to tell a brazen lie. In fact, you may have taken this involuntary lapse in employment to pursue a hobby you?ve always been interested in, like taking the best acting lessons you can find. Jobs are in short supply; it?s true. There is a silver lining behind this dark, gloomy cloud, however, in the form of online jobs.
It?s actually quite an amazing phenomenon. While the traditional job market continues to struggle, online work is starting to boom. While online ?jobs?, in the traditional sense of the word, are not exactly flowing out of the woodwork, a new type of worker is becoming more and more important to the overall workforce: the freelancer.
Online Freelancers
Freelancing isn?t exactly a new idea, but it is gaining in popularity. Perhaps it?s out of a necessity to continue to earn an income despite there being no permanent employment opportunities. People can be quite inventive in desperate circumstances, after all.
But there is also the fact online relations are becoming an increasingly vital part of our society and how it interacts. There?s also the fact freelancers get to enjoy a number of perks their rat-race counterparts do not: the freedom to work on their own schedule doing the projects that interest them.
That isn?t to say freelancing is all enjoyment all the time. It definitely is work, and sometimes freelancers have to take on jobs they don?t like in order to pay the bills. But there is an undeniable aspect of freedom when it comes to the hours worked, business attire and the release from morning commutes.
Types of Online Work
The majority of the online workforce consists of creative-type jobs. Perhaps the largest portion of online workers has some connection with internet design and marketing, from web developers to content writers. There are also opportunities for voice actors to read scripts, perform voice-overs for commercials or contribute to a company?s audio marketing efforts. Kind of makes you want to take the best acting class for voice work in your area, doesn?t it?
There are also a number of companies who are moving their traditional employees to more home-based positions, using the convenience of the internet and traditional phone conferences to handle the majority of the workload. Other businesses are starting to offer online services that were once only available by coming into the office. Lawyers, for example, are starting to offer consults over the internet.
It?s certainly a different frontier from anything we?ve ever known as a society and it begs the question of whether we will ever see the traditional workforce regain the types of numbers it once had.
