BYU draws in students from all over the globe.? Harriet Jewson is an international student who came to BYU from Yarn, England.? She moved halfway across the world to get involved in special education here at BYU, because she felt it is where she needed to be.
Jewson was born and raised in a small town in Northern England.? Though her immediate family moved to the United States last year, her extended family is still living in the United Kingdom.? Jewson loves running, movies, reading, her fianc?, and her major-special education.
Admitted to the Special Education Undergraduate Program last winter, Jewson has always known that she wanted to pursue a career in special education.
?In my home ward in England, there was a little girl with autism who I spent a lot of time with,? Jewson said.? ?I had so much fun with her, I loved it.?
Jewson has also gained better understanding of her interest in special education through the influence of her own mother.? Jewson?s mother taught people with special needs, and Jewson had the chance to work with her on a regular basis.
?I loved going into the school to volunteer,? Jewson said.
With the exposure to students that had special needs, Jewson knew that special education was the right path for her at BYU.? She plans to start an internship next fall, or student teach.
After graduation in April 2013, she plans to teach at the high school level here in the United States.
?I have had lots of training here in the U.S., and I am used to the school system here,? Jewson said.
Jewson has loved her time here at BYU, and is grateful for the decision she made to major in special education.
?I have really enjoyed volunteering and working with special needs kids already,? Jewson said.? ?I am excited for what is ahead.?
