When fellow author Jennifer Griffith Stewart fist told me about her newest novel, Big in Japan, my reaction was: ?Wow, that?s different. It will either be an embarrassing flop, or a huge success.?

Now that I?ve had the pleasure of reading her book, I?m going with huge success.

This isn?t my usual thing. It?s about an ordinary guy who has an ordinary job. The only thing unusual about him is that he?s unusually obese. He views himself as invisible, since that?s how others treat him, which is ironic, really because he?s so huge that he?d be hard to miss. ?But overlooked he is, over and over again. Until he visits Japan and becomes?accidentally?a sumo wrestler.

Yeah. A sumo wrestler.

Like I said, this isn?t my usual thing and I was as surprised as I was delighted that I liked this book. Really liked it. The hero is so likable. He?s really a knight in shining armor disguised as a big fat guy, and I can?t help but cheer for him from the very beginning.

The author knows her stuff, too. Though a few of the Japanese words threw me, she did a good job of keeping the reader informed of what everything meant and who all the characters were. The romance was beautifully done, and while it seemed hopeless through most of the book, there is the promised happily ever after. I was so excited about this new book that I invited Jennifer Griffith to be my guest author today.

So without further ado, here?s my interview with Jennifer Griffith, author of Big in Japan.

DONNA: Welcome Jennifer! First, let?s start with a little biographical info.

JENNIFER: I grew up in Idaho, studied technical writing in college, but I never tried my hand at fiction until our first son was born. My husband encouraged me to write, and that?s when my first of four published novels came about. My son is 14 now, we have five kids and a dog (who is kind of my nemesis) and I?ve been writing ever since.

DONNA: Tell us about BIG IN JAPAN.

JENNIFER: ?It?s a fish out of water story. An overweight Texan, Buck Cooper, is just a nobody. He?s overlooked in every aspect of his life. He goes to Japan in a family emergency, and there he accidentally becomes the first blond sumo wrestler. ? It?s a light, breezy story, meant to be just cotton candy fun. It?s a sports novel, but it?s more than about sports. There?s a romance, but it?s more than a romance. This story is about Buck coming out of his shell as an overweight man and coming to realize he has something to offer, becoming the warrior he was always meant to be.

DONNA: What made you choose sumo? What?s sumo all about?

JENNIFER: When I lived in Japan, I was with some friends riding in a car and the radio was tuned to a sumo match. The teenage girl with us went wild over the results of a match. It kind of shocked me, since sumo seemed so ? well, weird to me. But when I started writing BIG IN JAPAN, I had to research it, and it is really pretty cool. ? There are no weight classes, so lighter guys have to face heavier guys, and sometimes they can beat a bigger guy due to better balance or strategy. They just have to push their opponent out of the ring or else make him touch the ground with any part of his body other than the bottom of his foot, so it seems pretty simple. But there?s so much power involved. Anybody who?s interested in sumo can watch a ton of different clips of matches online.

DONNA: Obesity is kind of a theme in the book, right?

JENNIFER: Yes, it?s a theme, but it?s not really hammered away at. Buck has to deal with it some, of course. It seems like prejudice against fat is one of the last bastions of intolerance in our culture. We?re working our way through race relations and ageism and all of that, but we still have these fat jokes and often people who are overweight are simply overlooked and undervalued. It?s something people do subconsciously, but the challenge is still there. As a mom of five, I?ve been up and down the scale, and it?s tough when you?re tipping the higher numbers. It?s a real challenge to keep self esteem buoyed up, especially when the media and our culture are tearing away at it.

DONNA: You clearly speak Japanese. You lived in Japan for a few years, right?

JENNIFER: In college I took a year and a half of Japanese and I lived in Japan as a missionary. It was the best! I got to live in a Japanese house, sleep on a futon, eat everything from natto (fermented soybeans) to pan-fried crickets, and speak the language. I met some of the most delightful people in the world. It was just the best experience I could imagine. Of course, the learning curve of going from speaking not a word of the language before I went to needing to speak to everyone wherever I went was pretty steep. That was tough! But totally worth it. I love, love, love Japan.

DONNA: How can someone (besides the very lucky me) get a copy of your book?

JENNIFER: As of July 28th, it?s in bookstores nationwide. Barnes and Nobles especially, and independent bookstores. Plus it?s available online. My publisher Jolly Fish Press was super about getting it in all formats. It?s in both hardcover and paperback, and it?s available as an ebook, too. Yeah, so here?s a link to it. If someone reads it, I love to hear from readers, so find me on Facebook or Twitter!

Curiosity's Mars exploration: Is it worth the money?

The search for life on Mars has captivated the imaginations of many, but it is costly. Some say it's time to cut spending on NASA's Mars missions, while others say the research is important in the quest for understanding the 'meaning of life.' ?

Humans have launched 40 spacecraft to the Red Planet, lured by the prospect that life might once have existed in what is now dry rocks and sand. The latest machine to make the journey is NASA?s?Mars?Science Laboratory, a hulking, souped-up lab-on-wheels that will plunge toward the Martian surface next week.

But even as excitement builds, some wonder: Is?Mars?exploration a good investment?

It certainly doesn?t come cheap. It?s hard to calculate a total price tag, but over the 48 years that NASA has been launching missions to?Mars, Americans have spent a significant sum. The Viking missions alone cost nearly $1 billion ? in 1970s dollars. The twin rovers Spirit and Opportunity cost a total of about $1 billion to build and operate as well.

Curiosity, as the?Mars?Science Laboratory rover is known, is over budget at $2.5 billion.

Some in the federal government have suggested it?s time to roll back the spending. President Barack Obama?s fiscal plan for 2013 would cut NASA?s funds for?Mars?exploration from $587 million to $360 million.

Proponents insist?Mars?science is vital for the U.S. More visits to our next-door neighbor could answer lingering questions about Earth?s history, reinforce U.S. prestige and get more children interested in science.

It also could bring humanity closer to answering the ultimate question: Are we alone in the universe?

?It?s the search for the meaning of life,? said Alden Munson, a senior fellow at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies, a science and technology think tank based in Arlington, Va.

America?s love affair with?Mars?can be traced to astronomer Percival Lowell, who turned his telescope to the Red Planet in the 1890s and thought he saw an intricate system of canals that must have been built by intelligent beings. He never found them, of course, but Martians became a science fiction mainstay.

Earthlings got their first up-close view of?Mars? rocky surface in 1965, when Mariner 4 flew by and photographed a surface that appeared as dead as the moon?s ? lacking water or active geology, two prerequisites for life.

But later missions, from the Mariner 9 orbiter to Spirit and Opportunity, helped establish?Mars?as a useful comparative laboratory for studying climate and geophysics on Earth. They demonstrated that the planet was once warmer and wetter than it is now. Long ago, it may have been a hospitable cradle for life.

When planetary scientists assembled recently at the behest of the National Academies to set research priorities for the next decade, the search for conditions that would allow life to emerge on?Mars?topped the list.

What is a REIT and is it for you? - Realty Biz Consulting

REIT is an acronym for a real estate investment trust.? The advantage to the investor in a REIT is the source of income it provides.? Specifically, due to the structure of the REIT it does not accrue corporate tax, instead it returns all of the taxable income to investors.? Although the REIT structure avoids double taxation to shareholders, tax losses cannot be passed through.? The investor receives a 1099 form for tax purposes and it is therefore taxed like additional income.

?

There are three types of REITS.

  • An Equity REIT is a corporation that purchases, owns and manages real estate properties; it does not own or originate real estate loans. It may also develop properties.
  • ?A Mortgage REIT is a corporation that purchases, owns and manages real estate loans; it does not own real estate properties. It may or may not originate commercial and/or residential loans.
  • ?A Hybrid REIT is a corporation that purchases, owns and manages both real estate loans and real estate properties. It has the qualities of both an equity and mortgage REIT which is why it is referred to as a hybrid.

?

The overall purpose of the REIT envisioned by the U.S. Congress was to provide a means for investors and in turn the developers of real estate to mutually benefit from growth.? It places the average investor in a position of being a big player with the benefit of a share of the profits. A small investment in a REIT can enhance a portfolio of stocks and bonds. Each investment dollar goes into enhancing or creating the availability of funds for building more equity and income into the REIT.

?

Due to the nature of the REIT, it must be organized and structured according to strict guidelines. The SEC guidelines apply to those REITS public traded on the New York Stock Exchange and governs those REITS listed with the exchange. Privately held REITS must comply with IRS standards and other state and federal laws pertaining to trusts.

?

The REIT can be designed to fit almost any scenario available in the real property world. It can play the upside and the downside and provide hybrid type coverage.? Primarily the REIT is composed of commercial property including shopping malls, apartment complexes and income producing properties. It can also be packaged with residential real estate of any type so long as it is also income producing.

?

The REIT has seen increased interest recently investors because it provides stable income along with a solid compliment to their portfolio of stocks and bonds. Because of the intricacies of the real estate market and commercial property in particular? investors should consult with a qualified REIT broker or investment advisor before jumping into the market.? Lists of REITs are available through Morningstar or may be reviewed on-line at the National Institute of Real Estate Investment Trusts.? You can also normally get a list of REIT?s in your area from your State Comptroller?s office.

?

The current concerns about real estate mortgages defaulting and a slow down in United States real estate markets does not mean the REIT investment is in jeopardy.? Hybrid REITS afford the investor security in good times along with troubling areas of the market.? It should also be remembered that REITs are available for nearly all of the worlds real estate markets. In many parts of the world, specifically China, Asia, Europe and Dubai, the real estate markets in both commercial and residential income producing properties are booming.

?

The REIT is an investment that any investor should consider and review the merits of with a trusted financial planner with expertise in the REIT market world wide.

Troops, students, teachers to fill Olympic seats

LONDON ? Troops, teachers and students are getting free tickets to fill prime seats that were empty at some Olympic venues on the first full day of competition.

Organizing chief Sebastian Coe answered widespread criticism Sunday by predicting that seats left unused, largely by Olympic and sports officials, will not be an issue as the games proceed.

?It is obvious, some of those seats are not being used in the early rounds,? he said at a briefing.

He declined to blame Olympic sponsors, whom he had earlier promised to ?name and shame? if they did not use their allocations. Sponsors, including Coca-Cola and Visa, defended their use of allotted tickets ? 8 percent of the 8.8 million available tickets.

The issue is sensitive for Olympic organizers and British sports fans after hundreds of thousands of people failed to get tickets in an initial public ballot.

?There is not a single person who thinks it is shambolic,? Coe insisted, adding no one would object to free tickets for military personnel who ?stepped up to the mark? this month to help solve a security staffing crisis at venues.

Coe?s organizing team has long promised to fill venues and avoid a similar problem from the Beijing Olympics.

He said he was ?jammed in shoulder to shoulder? with Olympic officials to see swimming finals ? including the first Ryan Lochte-Michael Phelps duel ? on Saturday evening. He also pointed to record crowds lining the men?s road race route, and for rowing events at Eton Dorney.

?Those venues are stuffed to the gunnels. The public are in there,? Coe said.

Yet broadcast images of signature Olympic events, such as gymnastics and swimming, revealed rows of empty seats for qualifying rounds Saturday. Tennis at Wimbledon?s Centre Court was sparsely attended just weeks after the Grand Slam event sold out.

Army personnel attended gymnastics sessions Sunday morning at North Greenwich Arena during down time from security duties.

?There are a whole bunch of the military actually sitting in those seats at the moment. We can and we have moved them in there,? Coe said.

Students and teachers from east London neighborhoods also would get late calls for free tickets, having already been accredited in a planned reallocation program. Some ticket holders will get upgrades inside venues, Coe said.

Some blame for the opening day embarrassment was falling on ?accredited people,? including the Olympic family, athletes, and some sponsors and media, organizers said.

Coe said it was typical at Olympics for sports and national team officials to be ?dragged to any number of venues,? and be too busy to attend events in the opening days. ?I don?t think you will be seeing this as an issue long term during the games.?

He went on to defend sponsors, whose legal rights to protect their brand at the Olympics often fuel criticism.

(AP) ? Three Russian feminist rockers rejected charges of hooliganism for performing a "punk prayer" in Moscow's main cathedral against Vladimir Putin's return as president as a trial against them opened in earnest on Monday. The charges could carry a punishment of up to seven years in prison.

The three members of the Pussy Riot band ? Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 23, Maria Alekhina, 24, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 29 ? have been in custody for five months since their February stunt. Their prosecution has caused a sharp public divide and drawn protests from rights groups who have declared them prisoners of conscience.

The trial began July 20 but the first sessions were devoted to procedural issues. On Monday, with the court turning to the substance of the case, Tolokonnikova and other defendants said in statements read by their lawyer that their goal was to express their resentment over Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Kirill's support for Putin's rule.

They pleaded not guilty to the official charges of hooliganism driven by "religious hatred." Tolokonnikova said she felt sorry if some of the believers felt insulted by their act, but that they didn't mean to offend anyone. It wasn't clear how long the trial might last, but a court has recently ruled that the women should be kept in custody for another half-year. Two other participants in the performance haven't been identified and remain at large.

Here is a look at what the women did and background on the case:

THE "PUNK PRAYER"

Two weeks before March's presidential election five women dressed in brightly colored miniskirts and balaclavas ? masks that cover their faces entirely and leave only the eyes uncovered ? and took over the church's pulpit for less than a minute. They high-kicked and danced around while singing a song pleading "Virgin Mary, drive Putin away!" that also contained diatribes against the top Orthodox clergy. They bowed and blessed themselves as security guards arrived to take them out. The performance was videotaped and immediately became an Internet hit. The act followed a series of other recent performances by the group, including one from atop a bus and another one from a jail roof. Shortly before their church stunt, they became an Internet sensation for a song titled "Putin Chickens Out" from a spot on Red Square used in czarist Russia for announcing government decrees.

THE CHURCH

The Christ the Savior Cathedral, Moscow's main orthodox cathedral, was consecrated in 1883 to mark the Russian victory over Napoleon. It was blown up in 1931 as part of Soviet dictator Josef Stalin's anti-church campaign, and a plan called for building a giant Palace of Soviets in its place that would have become the world's tallest building if built, complete with a statue of Soviet founder Vladimir Lenin perched on top. That plan was delayed by swampy ground at the site and then abandoned for good when World War II began. The site was turned instead into a sprawling outdoor swimming pool. After the Soviet collapse, the towering church was rebuilt with the help of public donations and was consecrated in 2000. It has since served as Moscow's main Orthodox cathedral, becoming a symbol of the restoration of the Orthodox Church's power.

THE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH'S RESPONSE

Patriarch Kirill has condemned the rockers' act as "blasphemous" and denounced those believers who called for the church to forgive them. His stance reflects the church's growing clout and has raised concerns about its close connections to the government and its growing influence over decision-making.

PUBLIC DIVIDE

Russia's leading liberal politicians and some of the nation's most prominent cultural figures have strongly protested the trial and criticized the church for supporting the criminal case instead of showing clemency. Amnesty International has called the three women prisoners of conscience. At the same time, some Orthodox groups and many believers are urging strong punishment for an action they consider sacrilegious. A poll conducted in Moscow earlier this month found that half of respondents oppose the trial while 36 percent support it. The rest were undecided.

THE KREMLIN'S STANCE

Putin has avoided comment on the case, but many commentators believe that he has given his blessing to the prosecution of the three rockers as part of a crackdown on dissent following unprecedented protests in Moscow against his 12-year rule. Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said that it's up to the court to issue a verdict, but noted that some nations have even tougher punishment for that kind of action.

5 ways to deal with stress | Personal Growth and Self Improvement ...

You need a 7 Day BrainwashSome people seem to breeze through life, adapting to every stressful event with comparative ease. Nothing seems to hold them back and they handle problems as they arise efficiently and with minimal stress. These people are resilient, they have the right frame of mind to be able to cope and they are not afraid to face stress head on.

It?s all too easy to be negative these days. These are difficult times but having a positive mental attitude certainly helps an individual to be able to overcome the types of stressors that most people have to face such as potential job loss, bereavements, financial concerns or poor health.

To increase resilience and therefore combat stress before it becomes a problem, try to adopt the following:

1. See any problems that arise as solvable. With the right frame of mind, any problem can be solved or certainly alleviated. Write down any problems or concerns and think about options. Half of the battle when fighting stress triggers are that many people leave them to grow bigger and to become more of a concern through fear. Writing a problem down captures it and clarifies it, making it become an isolated and tangible problem- anything that is tangible, is resolvable.

2. Change is a part of everyday life and although it can be unsettling and be a genuine cause for concern, it?s vital that change is also seen as a positive step to encounter.

3. Determine that success is achievable through working smarter. Rejection is only part of the journey to success, keep on the path with hardened resolve and success will be yours.

4. Have a healthy lifestyle outside of family issues and work concerns. Take part in fun activities for enjoyment. Relaxational pursuits help keep the stressors at bay.

5. Ask for help if needed. The term No Man is an Island? is a true one. Having the support of friends and family can make everything seem possible.

Protect Critical Network Assets with Comprehensive Vulnerability ...

Internet and Technology | Computers and Technology | * Written by Patrica | Monday, 30 July 2012 01:59 | Word Count: 414

Cyber-attacks are becoming more universal with almost every business and organization relying on an open and accessible internet to remain competitive. Businesses can suffer immeasurable losses if a hacker defaces a website, or critical customer information is lost or stolen. ?The volatile network environment has made it necessary for organizations to remediate network vulnerabilities regularly. If an organization fails to ensure safety of sensitive data from potential security threats they may face severe penalty from the law enforcing authorities. It has become imperative for the organizations to take steps to improve their e-Governance and ensure data safety, making vulnerability management a requirement, The vulnerability management program ensures that current security issues within the environment are identified and assessed using IT risk management and dealt with in a cost-effective and efficient manner. The fear of revenue loss should motivate smart businesses to begin taking proactive measures against vulnerabilities. Vulnerability management (VM) is a measurable and proactive process which enables organizations to understand the risk of certain vulnerabilities in its IT environment and to ensure its network is not compromised. Besides identifying and eliminating the vulnerabilities, an effective vulnerability management program must continually monitor weaknesses, looking for new gaps while ensuring known ones remain closed. Once you have identified the vulnerabilities, they should be assigned to the appropriate employees, and steps should be taken to test the fixes to ensure that they are truly resolved. VM can be implemented using cost-effective technology for networks of all sizes and automates much of what used to be a complex, manual process. To build a truly robust program, an organization needs to incorporate IT Asset inventory management, configuration management and change management into the patching lifecycle. And for even more effective control and governance, penetration testing and patch and control validation should be added to the mix as well. Vulnerability management performed regularly helps organizations to identify the security threats at the initial stages and take suitable action to close the gaps in the security system. Leading market players in compliance management solutions have introduced efficient vulnerability management tools that helps to manage the data, functions and tasks related to assets and other associated vulnerabilities. As effective vulnerability management has become a pre-requisite for every business, it is prudent to invest in a solution that can help tackle today?s ever increasing system threats and help you evaluate your infrastructure, networks and application environments.

Green Blog: Q. and A.: Greening the London Olympics

Efforts to minimize the environmental impact of large-scale sporting events were ?conspicuously? absent? until Lillehammer played host to the 1994 Olympic Games in Norway, the United Nations Environment Program says. Responding to concerns raised by local environmental groups, Lillehammer?s organizers came up with a number strategies, including a unique system to retrieve and recycle the bullets used in the shooting events.

For their efforts, they received the U.N.E.P. Global 500 Award for setting a new environmental standard.

That standard has steadily evolved ever since, and today must balance social and economic impacts as well, according to David Stubbs, the head of sustainability for the London Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Since London?s bid committee was formed nine years ago, this broader view of sustainability has been central to the planning for the 2012 summer games, he said. I spoke with Mr. Stubbs last week at his office within view of the Olympic Park in London. Following are excerpts, edited for brevity and clarity.

Q.

Where do you think you have broken new ground when it comes to greening the games?

A.

We?ve been responsible for developing the first global standard for sustainable event management, ISO 20121. It recognizes the unique nature of events where you have spikes of activity, which is different from managing a steady-state company. It also takes a broader approach to sustainability, recognizing that social and economic aspects of events tie in with the environmental ones. We wanted to look at a balanced approach across all these things.

We are also being monitored by an independent assurance body, the Commission for a Sustainable London 2012, which is the first time the games have had a body like this. They report to the Olympic board, which is the ultimate governance body for the games. They?ve issued numerous reports on our progress against our targets over the last four or five years, and at times they have been critical of us.

Then there?s the ?food vision? program. Previously, no one has challenged the catering sector to look at sustainable sourcing standards for large events, especially on this scale. We estimate 14 million meals will be served over the course of the games and all of the contracted caterers, including sponsors like Coca Cola and McDonald?s, have adopted the food vision principles. That includes things like fair trade, M.S.C.-certified (Marine Stewardship Council-certified) fish and Farm Assured Red Tractor [a program that assures the safety of food production, from the farm to its packaging].

We also set up the London Legacy Development Corporation three years ago. Their remit is to look beyond the games to ensure the long-term future of the site, which will become the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. There is a very detailed long-term plan for the site, the venues, the parklands and for future development, including housing.

The legacy company will do the transition work of getting the park ready for the public and breaking down the barrier between the new park and the old part of the city. No previous games have had a legacy body formed well in advance of the events.

Q.

Why did you choose this site, and what did it take to get it ready?

A.

When we started nine years ago, we recognized it was not just a question of hosting the Olympic Games; we also saw it as a massive opportunity to transform a large part of East London, an area that has been an industrial waste ground for centuries.

For example, on the Velodrome site, when they started work on that four years ago, there was a tremendous hole, about 30 feet deep, and at the bottom of the hole you could see the cobblestones of a Victorian street. All above that was rubbish, a century or more of waste and that had to be sorted out. The entire site was badly contaminated with things like lead, arsenic and tar, so one of the biggest pieces of work was the big cleanup, as we called it. We set up giant soil processing machines on site for washing, sieving, shaking something like 800,000 tons of contaminated soil.

We also had to take down the overhead power lines and underground them, clean up the rivers, reprofile the riverbanks, and demolish all the old derelict buildings on site. All that work was a vital part of making the site what it is today while fitting our longer-term vision. And about 90 percent of all the contracts awarded were to British firms, with 70 percent of these small to medium businesses.

Q.

Which aspect of the games will have the largest environmental impact?

A.

Our carbon footprinting work showed us that the embodied carbon in the construction materials was likely the biggest piece, not travel or waste. So we only built permanent structures that were part of the long-term plan, and temporary ones for everything else like the shooting range, venues for equestrian events, water polo, hockey, basketball.

For the temporary structures, by working closely with the designers, we identified what we could get that was already available and parts that could be reused or recycled. That massively reduces the footprint because you are using existing materials with a proper reuse strategy.

Even for the permanent structures, we tried to reuse existing material as much as possible. For the steel used around the top of the Olympic Stadium, we used gas main pipes that were surplus to a project from up north. They had already been manufactured and were available, so this saved time, saved budget and it saved carbon by avoiding making new material.

Q.

How close will you get to a carbon-neutral event?

A.

We?ve never said ?carbon neutral?; instead we?ve said ?low carbon? because obviously you can?t eliminate or mitigate all the emissions. Based on our carbon footprinting exercise, which we did as part of our planning process, we determined which aspects would have the biggest impact and focused on avoidance.

Carbon is a useful proxy because if you are saving carbon, you are also typically saving money and reducing waste. But it?s not a sustainability metric on its own because we considered other factors as I?ve already mentioned, like social and economic ones. Over all, we?re convinced that the net benefit of the games and transforming the site will be vastly superior to any negative environmental impacts.

Q.

Some of the London 2012 corporate sponsors, like Dow and BP, have had significant problems in their environmental records. How would you respond to critics who have said this undermines your sustainability message?

A.

Well look, you can?t put on the games without major commercial sponsors these days. But we made our sustainability criteria very clear, and all the partners that have come on board have had to demonstrate that they would meet them. I think a number of them have signed on to fast track changes in their own business practices.

Take the car fleet. We are using B.M.W. vehicles, and a vast number of these meet Euro 6 emission standards two years ahead of the legislation. Heineken has changed to PET [recyclable plastic] bottles for the first time in the U.K. Coca Cola has invested in a plastics recycling plant in Lincolnshire. So many of these partners are looking at the games as an opportunity to transform their own processes.

Many of our partners come from challenging sectors, and somewhere in the world they will have issues, but we are not here to change whole companies or whole industries. It?s not our charter. At the same time, all those companies would be the first to admit they can improve in sustainability terms.

Q.

Have you had to make any compromises to the athletic venues to meet your sustainability goals?

A.

Sebastian Coe [the president of the organizing committee] will always say ?the athletes come first,? so obviously the sport is the central part of the project. Plus the International Olympic Committee and the Paralympics Committee have to approve all the designs and specifications for the venues.

But a good example is the Velodrome. The timber for the track is sustainability-sourced. The design of the building is very carbon-efficient, like the lightweight roof with cable net structure. We avoided using thousand tons of steel just by a design change in the roof. You?ve got other design features like rainwater harvesting, natural ventilation and lighting. So you?ve got a venue that works from a sustainability point of view but is also a world-class sporting venue, according to all the international sporting bodies involved.

Q.

Will spectators know they are watching games in the latest green venues?

A.

For people watching the events from around the world, they probably won?t notice any difference in the venues. They won?t say, ?Oh, that looks a little bit funny, or a bit homespun and a bit ropey around the edges ? these must be the Ecogames.? It will be the same world-class games as any others. I hope, though through the commentary, they will know there?s been a lot more thought put into it than usual.

The Democrats' platform drafting committee voted to include language backing same-sex unions at a meeting in Minneapolis over the weekend. Democratic delegates will formally approve the platform during the convention, which will be held in early September in Charlotte, N.C.

The push by several high-profile Democrats to include support for?gay?marriage?in the party platform gained momentum after President Barack Obama voiced his personal support for same-sex unions earlier this year.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publically about the platform committee's decision.

The move was first reported by The Washington Blade.

A's top O's, improve to 18-3 in July

updated 10:25 p.m. ET July 28, 2012

BALTIMORE (AP) - The Oakland Athletics knew they had the potential to be one of the best teams in the majors.

They're now putting that talent on full display, and the results have thrust the surging A's to the brink of the best July in franchise history.

Yoenis Cespedes and Chris Carter hit two-run homers to back an effective pitching performance by Bartolo Colon, and Oakland beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-1 Saturday night for its ninth win in 10 games.

Jemile Weeks had three hits and scored twice for the A's, who are 18-3 (.857) in July. With one victory in the next three games, they'll finish the month with a better winning percentage than the 1931 club (26-7, .788).

"It's been impressive - I think for a lot of people, surprising," Weeks said. "For me, I always knew that this team was going to be somebody that could make some noise, and we're just starting to show that now. It's pleasing to see at this point."

Oakland has scored 40 runs in its last four games, including 16 in Toronto on Wednesday and 14 against the Orioles in the series opener. Saturday night, the A's combined offensive firepower and strong pitching to move in position for a sweep of fading Baltimore.

"Pitching's been our strength all year," manager Bob Melvin said. "We've come around offensively here recently. Certainly, the last month's indicative because of our record, but the pitching's been there all year."

Colon (7-8) scattered seven hits over 5 2-3 shutout innings, striking out five and walking one, to earn his first win in six starts since June 12. The 39-year-old is 12-8 with a 3.10 ERA lifetime against Baltimore, dating to 1998 when he pitched for Cleveland.

Nick Markakis' ninth-inning homer off Evan Scribner enabled the Orioles to avoid being blanked for the eighth time. Baltimore went down in order only once but stranded 11, went 0 for 6 with men in scoring position and lost for the fifth time in six games.

"They're trying. It's just not happening," manager Buck Showalter said. "I see them trying firsthand. It's not for lack of effort or lack of attention to what's causing it. When they do hit the ball on the button and it's right at somebody, it's frustrating. But if they keep going it will happen. It's not like it hasn't happened all year."

Tommy Hunter (4-6) gave up five runs and seven hits in 5 1-3 innings. The right-hander has yielded 24 home runs this season, at least one in all but two of his 16 starts.

"They hit two pretty darn good pitches," he said. "Outside of that, it is what it is."

Oakland broke on top in the fourth when Weeks led off with a single and Cespedes hit his 14th home run. The Orioles got a hit in each of the first four innings but failed four times to produce with runners in scoring position.

The Athletics made it 3-0 in the fifth. Kurt Suzuki hit an opposite-field double to right and scored on a single by Eric Sogard.

Carter chased Hunter in the sixth with a drive to left after Seth Smith hit a leadoff single. It was Carter's eighth homer since rejoining the A's on June 29.

"We're seeing Chris Carter (be) the guy we all hoped and anticipated him being," Melvin said. "Right now, he's quite a force and one of the reasons that, offensively, we've been so good this month."

In the bottom half, the Orioles got singles from Wilson Betemit and Mark Reynolds before Jordan Norberto struck out Omar Quintanilla to end the inning.

Adam Jones grounded out in the Baltimore seventh with two outs and runners on second and third.

Weeks singled and scored on a triple by Cespedes in the eighth.

NOTES: After the game, the Orioles optioned RHP Miguel Socolovich to Triple-A Norfolk. ... A's leadoff hitter Coco Crisp left in the eighth with tightness in his left hamstring. ... Baltimore DH Jim Thome did not play because of back spasms. ... Orioles 2B Brian Roberts (groin strain) began a minor league injury rehabilitation assignment with Class A Aberdeen on Saturday. Showalter said Roberts would be reevaluated after two games there. . Baltimore C Matt Wieters reported that his tight right biceps felt much better and said he expected to play Sunday. He has missed two games with the injury. . Oakland OF Josh Reddick was absent from the starting lineup a day after he crashed into the right-field scoreboard to make a game-ending catch. ... Travis Blackley (3-2) makes his first career start against Baltimore in the series finale. Wei-Yin Chen will pitch for the Orioles. ... Oakland LHP Dallas Braden's recovery from shoulder surgery was stalled in Arizona when he suffered a strained left groin while throwing. He has been shut down

Pests, which include insects like bees and wasps, and rodents like rats and mice, can be really hazardous both to human health and to structures and buildings. Especially when aggravated and provoked, such pests can inflict painful bites and stings, causing different reactions like pain and allergies, with some even becoming life threatening. Sadly, a research done by Chartered Institute of Environmental Health in UK revealed a tenfold increase in the number of councils that are no longer providing pest control services. The good news, however, is that you have the option to get rid of pests on your own, or have an Islington pest control professional do the job for you. In Islington, many companies are already available, offering different pest control services for different types of pests. The process often starts from home inspection -- which includes identification of sources of infestations, the amount of infestation and how much the infestation has damaged the structure. If you have chosen to hire an N1 pest control expert, the service provider would offer suggestions for pest extermination while considering the concerns you may have about the processes. Also, while an expert may have specific strategies and methods for certain situations, they may tailor their actions to ensure that they do not just apply the best treatment but also employ pest control techniques that you are comfortable with. The process also includes the use of either chemical or non-chemical type of extermination. The fastest way of eliminating pests and the most commonly used by experts is chemical extermination, or the use of insecticide sprays or powder. Experts generally use chemicals and compounds that are specifically designed to kill pests, and at the same time prevent damage to structures. Meanwhile, especially if you are doing the process on your own, you may also choose to use non-chemical pest control methods, such as habitat modification, elimination of possible hiding spots for pests, and application of pest-baiting or trapping systems. For a small infestation, or an infestation that has just started to grow, eradicating pests on your own may be wiser. There are several products that are easily accessible in the market. Some of the basic tools, which may already be kept at your house, include a mini flashlight, screwdriver, dusting equipment, baits gun and spray rigs, as well as safety equipment including chemical gloves and goggles. Meanwhile, if the infestation has gotten serious and has grown into something that is difficult to handle, asking help from an expert may be your best option. Islington pest control companies offer diverse services, including emergency services like removing hives and nests, as well as killing pests that have started to plague your home; pretreatment of newly constructed homes and buildings which include sealing corners that can be potential avenues of entry for pests; and infestation inspections and sanitation services. Some companies also offer follow-up services.

Offering different types of pest control and treatment for different types of pests, we are one of the most reliable Islington pest control companies you can rely on. Visit our website for more information about the effective N1 pest controlservices we offer.

Tips To Help You Enjoy Your Travels | articlereference.net

If you?re going to be driving to your destination, especially if it?s a long trip, try to travel at night. There?s a lot less traffic on the roads so you can most likely get their faster. And if you?re traveling with kids, they can curl up in the back seat and sleep the drive away.

If you pack electronics while traveling, either remove the batteries or flip them around. Some small electronics can be easily flipped on. You definitely do not want them flipping on in your bag during the trip. There is a good chance the battery might be drained by the time they are unpacked.

In order to truly enjoy traveling during a vacation it is very important to bring only what you need. It is hard to travel when there is unnecessary baggage. Another thing that this brings is that you will spend more time enjoying your vacation rather than pulling along that bulky bag.

It is always best to only drink bottled water when traveling, especially if you are going to a foreign country. You never know what is really in the water if you are drinking it from a tap. Your body may not be used to drinking water that is not purified, and you could find yourself feeling very sick because of it.

Postcards make a wonderful souvenir of your travels. If something special happens during your trip, buy a postcard from the place you are visiting, and write down the memory on the back of the card. Use the postcards to help you decorate an album or scrapbook; they are a special way to remember what you experienced.

When traveling long distances by airplane, make sure to get up and walk around every hour or two to stretch your legs. Staying seated for too long can lead to medical issues such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), so take a stroll up and down the aisle every once in a while.

When vacationing in any of our world?s beautiful areas, it is important to leave nothing behind. Do not leave trash of any kind, and do not take any artifacts from natural areas or historical sites. If you are in the wilderness, avoid disturbing the natural elements, for example leave the beautiful rocks where they are. Leave everything you find in these places as you found it.

Some people love to travel, regardless of their motivation. Others endure traveling at best. The difference between the two is not just a matter of temperament, though. When you take in smart travel advice like that found here, you can shift yourself towards being the former sort of person instead of the latter.

Enbridge races to clean up Wisconsin oil spill, restart line

GRAND MARSH, Wisconsin (Reuters) - Canada's Enbridge Inc. on Sunday raced to repair a major pipeline that spilled more than 1,000 barrels of oil in a Wisconsin field, provoking fresh ire from Washington over the latest in a series of leaks.

The spill on Friday -- almost two years to the day after a ruptured Enbridge line fouled part of the Kalamazoo River in Michigan -- has forced the closure of a major conduit for Canadian light crude shipments to U.S. refiners and threatens to further damage the reputation of a company that launched a more than $3 billion expansion program just two months ago.

Enbridge said it intended to begin repairs to Line 14 late on Saturday after making "excellent progress" in clean-up, allowing for visual inspection of the line. But it still did not know what had caused the incident and provided no estimate on when the 318,000 barrels-per-day Line 14 would resume service.

An official with the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) said two inspectors were at the site on Sunday, and that all of the pooled oil had been cleaned up.

"The line has been uncovered to begin removing the failed section and send it to a metallurgical lab for examination," PHMSA spokesman Damon Hill said.

Officials from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources are also on site, Enbridge said in a statement.

An image of the area posted on Enbridge's website showed a patch of damp, blackened earth near a stand of trees about one-third the size of a football field. It found some oil on two small farm ponds, but said they did not connect to moving waterways and that drinking wells did not seem to be affected.

Although the spill appeared to be relatively small and quickly contained, it comes at a delicate time for Enbridge, which suffered another leak in Alberta, Canada, a month ago and endured a scathing report from U.S. safety regulators over its handling of the Michigan incident in 2010, with employees likened to the "Keystone Kops" for their bungled response.

"Enbridge is fast becoming to the Midwest what BP was to the Gulf of Mexico, posing troubling risks to the environment," U.S. Representative Ed Markey, the top Democrat on the Natural Resources Committee, said in a statement.

"The company must be forthcoming about this entire incident, and deserves a top-to-bottom review of their safety culture, procedures and standards," said Markey, an outspoken critic of increasing imports of Canada's heavy oil sands crude.

Canada is the largest source of foreign crude for the United States, supplying over 2.4 million bpd of the more than 8.3 million bpd of imported by the nation on average in July. Enbridge's lines, the world's largest crude oil pipeline system, carry the lion's share of those shipments.

Just two months ago, Enbridge kicked off one of the most sweeping expansions in its history, announcing a multibillion-dollar series of projects aimed at moving western Canada and North Dakota oil to Eastern refineries and eliminating costly bottlenecks in the U.S. Midwest.

Line 14 is a 24-inch diameter pipe that was installed in 1998, making it a relatively new line. Enbridge said it had been inspected twice in the past five years.

BULGING STOCKS

Analysts said that the move, which comes as oil inventories in the Midwest hit record highs, may have a limited impact on crude oil futures when trading opens in Asia.

"I think that the pipeline (outage) is more likely to have a greater company impact that it will on the oil (futures) market -- I think that global growth and geopolitics will be more important than the pipeline," said Jason Schenker, president of Prestige Economics LLC in Austin, Texas.

U.S. and global oil prices have been balancing the risks of a large-scale disruption in Iranian crude against the struggling world economy this year. A surge in production from North Dakota and Canada has built up inventories in the U.S. Midwest due to a shortfall of capacity to move the oil into the Gulf Coast refining region.

Schenker said the impact of the Enbridge disruption on Chicago refineries will depend largely on how much crude they have stockpiled as well as the length of the outage. Total Midwest crude inventories have hit a record high over 110 million barrels over the past two months, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

TWO LANDOWNERS, ONE HOUSE 'COVERED'

In most cases, smaller pipeline leaks can be repaired quickly, although regulators may require significant work if they find any cause for alarm. Following the leak in Michigan two years ago -- which spilled roughly 15 times more oil than the Wisconsin leak if initial estimates of the Friday incident prove correct -- one line was shut for more than two months.

Enbridge said two landowners had been affected and that one family had been relocated for their safety and comfort, but that most of the spill was restricted to the pipeline right-of-way. It kept its estimate of the spill at around 1,200 barrels -- about as much as would fit in six very large oil tanker trucks.

"The house right next to where the pipeline broke got covered with oil," said Patrick Swadish, who lives about a mile northwest of the spill site in a rural area of mostly farmland, some 80 miles north of the college town of Madison.

Oil trucks, Enbridge vehicles and about a dozen crews were working in the area, which had been cordoned off by sheriff deputies. Local law enforcement officials said they had been told it may take up to 30 days to clean the area.

Enbridge also said it had briefly shut down two larger adjacent lines -- the 400,000 bpd Line 61 and the 670,000 bpd Line 6A -- but both were pumping again within a day. Together with Line 14, they form the backbone of Lakehead, a 2.5 million bpd network that is the main route for Canadian exports.

Another line, the 180,000 bpd Line 13, which carries diluents from Chicago to Edmonton, Alberta, would be restarted once it was confirmed the release had not had an impact on it, it said.

PREVIOUS SPILLS

Just weeks ago, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board blasted Enbridge's handling of the July 2010 rupture of its Line 6B near Marshall, Michigan, which led to more than 20,000 barrels of crude leaking into the Kalamazoo River.

The NTSB said it found a complete breakdown of company safety measures, and that Enbridge employees performed like "Keystone Kops" trying to contain it. The rupture went undetected for 17 hours.

U.S. pipeline regulators fined it $3.7 million for the spill, their largest ever penalty.

The incidents, plus the most recent spill in Alberta, have caused furor just as the company seeks approval for its C$6 billion Northern Gateway pipeline to Canada's West Coast amid staunch opposition from environmental groups and native communities that warn against oil spills.
