iPhone turns 5 years old - 10 of the best iPhone commercials

Apple has a unique talent. Sure, Tim Cook's company makes some of the best hardware on the planet (as well as some truly glorious software to go with it), but that's not what we're focusing on today.

We're actually talking about the Cupertino company's gift for repeatedly producing exciting, informative, and entertaining TV advertisements for its new gizmos. Over and over again.

Since the iPhone is celebrating its 5th birthday today, we thought we'd scour the web (mostly YouTube) and pick ten of our favourite ads from the smartphone's relatively short lifetime. Enjoy them. We certainly did.

Introducing the iPhone

All the way back in 2007, Apple's first-gen iPhone said "hello" to the world in a commercial that aired during that year's Oscars.

The short video showed a bunch of famous actors from a bunch of famous movies picking up their phones and saying "hello". Simples.

Introducing the iPhone 3G

A year later, Apple advertised the next iteration of its ?ber-popular smartphone through this short and sweet commercial, which dubbed the iPhone 3G as the "first phone to beat the iPhone". It's hard to disagree.

There's an app for that

There really is an app for almost anything.

This commercial from 2009 highlighted the fact that you can complete almost any chore, solve almost any problem, or just have a little fun by visiting the App Store on your iPhone and installing one of these application thingies. It'll never catch on.

Introducing the iPhone 3GS

"It's the iPhone you love... now with video", Apple's iPhone 3GS ad boasted.

Introducing the iPhone 4

Apple's first iPhone 4 ad made an unsurprisingly big deal of one of the smartphone's major new features: FaceTime.

Apple didn't invent video calling, but it definitely created one of the best commercials for it.

Retina display on show

Apple managed to convince us all that the Retina display found on the iPhone 4 was a must-have piece of tech. How? By promising us that "every freckle, every wrinkle, every letter, every word, every tweet, tune, battle, and memory looks more beautiful than ever before". Who said I have wrinkles?! Who?!

Get your Game Center on

Apple used its "if you don't have an iPhone (... you are nothing, dagnabbit!!)" campaign to highlight the fact its platform contained the "largest selection of games on any phone". Oh, and Game Center - its mobile social gaming network.

Two is better than one

When the iPhone 4 managed to shake off the shackles of US carrier AT&T and make its way over to Verizon, Apple celebrated with a Waltz.

Introducing the iPhone 4S

For the iPhone 4S, Apple - once again - chose to play up a single new "revolutionary" feature in its first TV commercial. That time around, it was Siri: the iPhone 4S's intelligent (and occasionally mouthy) virtual PA.

Siri loves celebrities

To fully flaunt the capabilities of its personal assistant Siri, Apple called in the big guns.

Thus, The Big A ran a series of star-studded commercials, which followed Samuel L. Jackson as he planned a "date night" with his wife, Zooey Deschanel as she attempted to salvage a rainy day, and John Malkovich as he pondered the meaning of life. I still think it's 42.

Harris County Hospital District Tackles Childhood Obesity

June 29th, 2012 by Len Saunders

From Ultimate Montrose?..

Harris County Hospital District has started a program to educate families about the problem of childhood obesity.

Eleven out of 15 HCHD health centers now offer a nine-week Childhood Nutrition and Exercise Program, which requires parents to attend with the child.

?We want to touch the whole family,? said Karla Phillips, health educator at HCHD?s People?s Health Center, in the press release. ?Parents are the decision-makers, and if we get them on board with making healthy decisions, the whole family benefits.?

In the first hour of the class, participants will discuss healthy decisions and planning healthy meals. The second hour will be devoted to exercise.

?We play soccer, basketball, run around the track or even play games with a giant parachute,? said Yesenia Mora, senior health educator at Baytown Health Center, in the press release. ?The key is to get the kids and their parents moving.?

Although the program itself helps participants to lose weight, the ultimate goal is to educate local families on how to live a healthier life.

LETTERS: Readers sound off on what's missing from GOP nominee, politicians that dodge issues and A&M's latest expansion

What?s missing?

I?ve been listening to several conservative radio talk-show hosts who proclaim without a doubt that Barack Obama is the worst president we have had in the history of this nation. According to these guys, this president is a socialist, tax-and-spend liberal, he?s arrogant and anti-constitutionalist. They say he has wrecked the economy, set a course for bankrupting the country, burdened our future generations with trillions of dollars in debt and has destroyed our nation?s sense of pride and exceptionalism.

With all this perceived baggage, however, I find it amazing that recent polls show Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney are tied. If Obama is really so bad and he continues to ?destroy? this country, why is it the best Republicans can do is put in a guy who is so uninspiring in the polls?

Romney has no baggage compared to Obama. He has done nothing to embarrass our country and he hasn?t increased the deficit or the unemployment rate. Why is he not overwhelmingly ahead of Obama in the polls?

I believe Republicans have made a big mistake in their choice for a standard bearer for the GOP. This election should be locked up by the Republicans with no doubt as to the outcome.

What are they missing?

John Dalrymple, Waco

Plea to politicians

This has been mentioned before, but apparently our elected politicians aren?t listening. So I?ll say it again: Stop all of the bickering back and forth and forget about being Republican, Democrat or independent. Start thinking about what is best for American citizens.

Why not ask us what we think about the issues?

Stop the mudslinging and tell us where you stand on the isssues at hand and what you are doing to resolve the problems this country faces.

We don?t need lawmakers telling us how their opponent did drugs or had an affair years ago. That doesn?t have anything to do with the issues.

And don?t be a ?fence sitter.? Tell us what side you are on.

I know this last request will be the hardest of all, but please be honest. Don?t just tell us what you think we want to hear. This country was founded on Christian principles and our representatives should reflect those principles.

Bottom line: Stop the photo sessions and parties and start studying the issues. Talk to the people you represent and supposedly work for. That?s right, you work for us and you can be ?fired!?

Bill Pugh, Valley Mills

A&M expansion

Texas A&M University first got a medical school by affiliating with Scott & White Healthcare.?Then A&M bought Baylor University?s dental school (still called the Baylor College of Dentistry).

This week we learned that A&M has bought Texas Wesleyan School of Law in Fort Worth for about $25 million. It will be called the Texas A&M School of Law at Texas Wesleyan University.

I wonder if Baylor?s George W. Truett Theological Seminary is next on their list?

PNG - Vote for the right leader, says Bougainville President Momis

Thu, 28 Jun 2012

BUKA, PNG (THE NATIONAL) ---- As more than 145,000 eligible voters go to the polls in Bougainville this week, Autonomous Region president John Momis is encouraging them to have the moral courage to vote for the right leader. In a statement, Momis said choosing the right leaders to represent Bougainville in the national parliament was crucial to the region?s progress towards the referendum for full autonomy or independence in 2015. ?This is the time when the power lies in the hands of every citizen of Papua New Guinea to elect the best MPs that will represent them.? Momis said the job of a politician was not to create his own business or use his office to advance his interests but to serve the needs of all people, including those who did not support him. He said elected public office holders were simply public servants and servants of the people.?Elect the best person who holds the interest of the people at heart and will serve you,? he said. It is not hard talking about it but put into practice, it is very difficult that is why I urge each voter to really scrutinise each candidate and vote for the person who will serve.? ?This huge privilege to graduate a person into the political seat rests in your hands. You have equal right, no matter where you are from, whether you are young or old or literate or not, that does not matter, you have the same right to cast your vote and only you have the right to say that out of that number of candidates contesting, we graduate this person, we elect this leader to represent us. This is a great privilege,? he said. He said as an independent Autonomous Bougainville Government, the Bougainville House of Representatives was independent from the national parliament and so it was important that the four elected Bougainville members respected and worked with the ABG. ?It is true that the winning candidate will be a member of the national government but that does not mean he will have authority over the ABG. The winning candidates must collaborate with the ABG to promote nothing but the best interest of the people of Bougainville.? Momis urged that the four members elected must be united in their effort to represent the people of Bougainville in the national parliament. ?Bougainville is a special case. We have a timeline to referendum that is three years away. If we do not have a united effort from our four elected members, and with the National Government and the people of Bougainville, things will not work out, people will be angry and we could end up having another very unstable region,? warned Momis.

Mind - Body Psychotherapy: Heartburn and GERD

Heartburn and GERD

If you?ve been diagnosed with acid reflux or have frequent heartburn and thought you had to give up all of the foods you love, there is good news. A study conducted at Stanford University reports that there is ?insufficient evidence? that avoiding chocolate, spicy foods, mint, citrus, fatty foods, carbonated beverages, or coffee will relieve GERD-associated heartburn.
?If you know that a certain food causes symptoms, you can steer clear of it, but most people do not need to avoid every common trigger across the board. A better course of action for relief is weight loss. Even three to five pounds can make a difference.

History of
July 4th

?

(More at history.com)

Variously known as the Fourth of July and Independence Day, July 4th has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution (1775-83).

In June 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies then fighting in the revolutionary struggle weighed a resolution that would declare their independence from Great Britain.

On July 2nd, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later its delegates adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson.

From 1776 until the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with typical festivities ranging from fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues.

The Birth of American Independence
When the initial battles in the Revolutionary War broke out in April 1775, few colonists desired complete independence from Great Britain, and those who did were considered radical. By the middle of the following year, however, many more colonists had come to favor independence, thanks to growing hostility against Britain and the spread of revolutionary sentiments such as those expressed in Thomas Paine's bestselling pamphlet "Common Sense," published in early 1776. On June 7, when the Continental Congress met at the Pennsylvania State House (later Independence Hall) in Philadelphia, the Virginia delegate Richard Henry Lee introduced a motion calling for the colonies' independence. Amid heated debate, Congress postponed the vote on Lee's resolution, but appointed a five-man committee--including Thomas Jefferson of Virginia, John Adams of Massachusetts, Roger Sherman of Connecticut, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania and Robert R. Livingston of New York--to draft a formal statement justifying the break with Great Britain.

On July 2nd, the Continental Congress voted in favor of Lee's resolution for independence in a near-unanimous vote (the New York delegation abstained, but later voted affirmatively). On that day, John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail that July 2 "will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival" and that the celebration should include "Pomp and Parade...Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other." On July 4th, the Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence, which had been written largely by Jefferson. Though the vote for actual independence took place on July 2nd, from then on the 4th became the day that was celebrated as the birth of American independence.

Early Fourth of July Celebrations

In the pre-Revolutionary years, colonists had held annual celebrations of the king's birthday, which traditionally included the ringing of bells, bonfires, processions and speechmaking. By contrast, during the summer of 1776 some colonists celebrated the birth of independence by holding mock funerals for King George III, as a way of symbolizing the end of the monarchy's hold on America and the triumph of liberty. Festivities including concerts, bonfires, parades and the firing of cannons and muskets usually accompanied the first public readings of the Declaration of Independence, beginning immediately after its adoption. Philadelphia held the first annual commemoration of independence on July 4, 1777, while Congress was still occupied with the ongoing war. George Washington issued double rations of rum to all his soldiers to mark the anniversary of independence in 1778, and in 1781, several months before the key American victory at Yorktown, Massachusetts became the first state to make July 4th an official state holiday.

After the Revolutionary War, Americans continued to commemorate Independence Day every year, in celebrations that allowed the new nation's emerging political leaders to address citizens and create a feeling of unity. By the last decade of the 18th century, the two major political parties--Federalists and Democratic-Republicans--that had arisen began holding separate Independence Day celebrations in many large cities.
July 4th Becomes A National Holiday

The tradition of patriotic celebration became even more widespread after the War of 1812, in which the United States again faced Great Britain. In 1870, the U.S. Congress made July 4th a federal holiday; in 1941, the provision was expanded to grant a paid holiday to all federal employees. Over the years, the political importance of the holiday would decline, but Independence Day remained an important national holiday and a symbol of patriotism.

Falling in mid-summer, the Fourth of July has since the late 19th century become a major focus of leisure activities and a common occasion for family get-togethers, often involving fireworks and outdoor barbecues. The most common symbol of the holiday is the American flag, and a common musical accompaniment is "The Star-Spangled Banner," the national anthem of the United States.

Rush to report US health ruling trips up CNN, Fox

NEW YORK (AP) ? President Barack Obama worried and Republicans celebrated when they first heard the news. But not so fast: In the split-second rush to report the Supreme Court's health care decision Thursday, CNN and Fox News Channel got it wrong.

It was an excruciating test for reporters who were handed a 59-page decision choked with legalese and asked to report its meaning almost instantly.

Bloomberg News and The Associated Press were the first reporting the news ? correctly, at 10:07 a.m. EST ? that the court upheld most of Obama's health care overhaul and a mandate that nearly every American have health insurance. They were followed by Reuters and the SCOTUSblog.

The New York Times made a point of tweeting that reporters and editors were analyzing the decision and would write when they were comfortable that the nuances were correct. The paper didn't tweet the news until 10:20 a.m.

CNN apologized for its error, saying it "regrets that it didn't wait to report out the full and complete opinion" that upheld the mandate requiring virtually all Americans to have health insurance. Fox, however, insisted it was right. "Fox reported the facts, as they came in," said network executive Michael Clemente.

The inaccurate reports were the first ones seen by Obama, who was watching four television monitors outside the Oval Office. White House Counsel Katherine Ruemmler came in moments later with the true story.

It was particularly embarrassing for CNN, which has suffered through one of its worst ratings quarters in several years, primarily due to a paucity of big news. The network eagerly awaited the court's decision, scheduled for 10 a.m., running a "countdown clock" on its screen for hours.

Anchor Wolf Blitzer and reporter Kate Bolduan reported at 10:08 a.m. that the health care law had been struck down, based on a reading of Chief Justice John Roberts' decision that the mandate was not a valid exercise of congressional power under the commerce clause of the Constitution. The screen read: "Supreme Ct. Kills Individual Mandate." The news was tweeted and emailed to the network's followers.

"The court striking down that mandate is a dramatic blow to the president," said CNN reporter John King.

By 10:13 a.m., some doubt had seeped in, and the onscreen headline read: "Supreme Court Rules on Obama Law."

"Let's take a deep breath and see what the justices actually decided," Blitzer said. "It could be more complicated than we originally thought."

Two minutes later, CNN reported the correct decision ? the court had upheld the individual mandate, basing it not on the commerce clause but on Congress' power of taxation. CNN then reported that the entire law had been upheld, with King calling it "a huge, huge victory for President Obama."

On Fox, Bill Hemmer touted the "breaking news" that the individual mandate had been declared unconstitutional. A Twitter account run by Fox anchor Bret Baier's show tweeted the same news. Within two minutes, however, anchor Megyn Kelly was citing SCOTUSblog's report and ordered producers to change an onscreen headline that read: "Supreme Court Finds Health Care Individual Mandate Unconstitutional."

"We're trying to do the best we can," Hemmer said.

The initial report on Baier's Fox show Twitter feed was deleted, followed by the tweet: "Getting word that the individual mandate will survive as a tax ? we are trying to work this out for you ? more to come."

Clemente, Fox executive vice president of news and editorial, was unapologetic. "We gave our viewers the news as it happened," he said. He said Hemmer reported that the mandate was not constitutional under the commerce clause, although the network's reporting gave the impression that the mandate had been fully struck down.

Obama's first news about the decision came from television monitors outside the Oval Office, where the cable channels were reporting that the mandate had been struck down, according to administration officials. Within moments, Ruemmler hurried toward the White House and flashed the president two thumbs up. She explained her reading, and Obama hugged her as Chief of Staff Jack Lew looked on.

Several members of Congress also tweeted incorrect information about the ruling. Republican Rep. Darrell Issa of California called it a "big win for liberty and the Constitution." Florida Republican Rep. Tom Rooney tweeted that it was "great news for the American people, victory for constitution." The politicians later removed the tweets from their Twitter feeds.

The Huffington Post's politics Twitter feed first made the wrong call and corrected itself, saying "we jumped the gun" following the CNN and Fox News reports.

Caution was discussed ahead of time during several planning meetings at The New York Times, said Jim Roberts, assistant managing editor. The paper was willing to take a few extra minutes to make sure it had exactly the right interpretation, he said.

"It's almost stupidly obvious to say, 'We want to be right,' but we want to be right," he said.

The Associated Press ? which delivered the news as a flash, its highest-priority designation ? anticipated a complex decision, and its Washington staff prepared for weeks for the various rulings that might come down, said Kathleen Carroll, the news service's senior vice president and executive editor.

"Our goal, as always: Get the facts and get them out quickly," Carroll said in a memo to the staff. "Once again, the enduring lesson prevails: Expertise and preparation are what make us fast and accurate."

ABC, CBS and NBC all interrupted programming for special reports and all generally got it right. The scene was reminiscent of the Supreme Court's decision that decided the 2000 presidential election between George W. Bush and Al Gore, with reporters standing onscreen, frantically leafing through pages as they tried to read and interpret at the same time.

ABC's Terry Moran had less than a minute to look at the decision before he was talking on the air to anchor George Stephanopoulos and he briefly vamped for time, saying "I'm just taking a quick look at it."

Describing the difficulty of the process in an interview, he said, "you have to be confident enough to say, 'I don't know.'"

In this case, Moran quickly spotted that Roberts had decided the case in agreement with the court's liberal justices, a sign that it was highly unlikely the health care law had been overturned. ABC did bobble one fact initially, incorrectly saying the court's decision was by a 6-3 vote instead of 5-4.

Moran said Thursday's lesson to journalists should be "slow down."

"I actually think the audience is much more interested in understanding than in seeing who finishes first in this case," he said. "In this day and age, there are few true scoops. ... On an event like this, take a breath."

CBS' Jan Crawford made the right call while reading it on the air. NBC's Pete Williams said that "the bottom line here is the Supreme Court has upheld the health care law."

The news media's scrambling quickly became fodder for humor online.

Damon Lindelof, co-creator of the television show "Lost," tweeted that "I am not turning off CNN until they TELL ME GORE WON FLORIDA!"

The website Gawker posted a photoshopped picture of a smiling Obama holding a tablet with CNN's website headlined "Mandate struck down," in a pose reminiscent of the famous photo of President Harry Truman holding up a newspaper with the incorrect "Dewey Defeats Truman" headline.

FILE- This Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, file photo, shows News Corp.'s headquarters in New York. Under pressure to limit contagion from the British phone hacking scandal, Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. confirmed Tuesday, June 26, 2012, that it is considering splitting into two publicly traded companies. The Wall Street Journal, News Corp.'s flagship newspaper, reported late Monday that the company is considering the separation of the newspaper and book publishing businesses from the entertainment arm, which includes Fox News Channel, broadcast TV network and 20th Century Fox movie studio. The media conglomerate did not specify Tuesday which businesses each company would contain. (AP Photo/Mark Lennihan, File)

News Corp. said Thursday that its board has approved plans to split into two companies. One company will operate as a newspaper and book publisher, while the other will be an entertainment company.

Here's how the split will work:

? Newspapers, book publishing and information services such as Dow Jones Newswires will be part of the publishing company. The 20th Century Fox movie studio, the Fox broadcast TV network and the Fox News channel will be part of the media and entertainment company.

? Shareholders will get a share in each company for every share of News Corp. they now own. That ratio may change by the time the plan is finalized. Both companies will trade publicly, under different stock tickers.

? Rupert Murdoch will be chairman of both companies and CEO of the media and entertainment company. The company did not name a CEO for the publishing business.

? News Corp.'s board unanimously approved the split, but it will need to approve a more formal proposal. The deal is also subject to shareholder and numerous regulatory approvals.

? News Corp. plans to hold a special meeting of its shareholders in the first half of 2013 and expects the deal to be completed in about a year.

Perhaps someday you'll need to go to the store because you ran out of cathode paint. A team of researchers has just announced a new paint-on battery design. The technique could change the way batteries are produced and eliminate restrictions on the surfaces used for energy storage.

The paint-on battery, like all lithium ion batteries, consists of five layers: a positive current collector, a cathode that attracts positively charged ions, an ion-conducting separator, an anode to attract negative ions, and a negative current collector. For each layer, the challenge was to find a way to mix the electrically conductive material with various polymers to create a paint that could be sprayed onto surfaces.

Neelam Singh, a member of the team of materials scientists and chemists from Rice University in Houston and Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium and lead author of the paper, says, "It was really exciting to find out. Can we really paint a battery on various surfaces and convert any object into a storage device?"

Singh says her team's work is filling a need in the socially critical field of energy storage for new battery designs. "We find that the focus of research is now shifting towards integration of batteries," she says. That is, people are trying to design batteries that can be built into a variety of different objects. Several teams are working to make thin and flexible batteries as well as batteries that can be incorporated into textiles. Solar energy is one of the applications that researchers are particularly interested in. Solar panels can require large surface areas, and the Rice team's design is an efficient way to collect and store energy in this realm.

To test their design, they applied the battery paints onto ceramic bathroom tiles, glass, a flexible transparency film, stainless steel and the side of a beer stein. In each case, the battery worked. In one experiment, they hooked a solar cell to one of the batteries and powered an LED display.

Singh said the biggest challenge was to make a battery that was both stable and powerful: "It was not very easy to get all the layers on top of each other without interfering with their capacity or compromising the performance of the battery." There were safety concerns as well. Many lithium ion batteries use aluminum as a positive current collector, but aluminum microparticles can be lung irritants, so using them in aerosol paint would be hazardous. Instead, the researchers relied on carbon nanotubes.

Lithium cobalt oxide was used as the cathode, commercially available gel electrolytes as the separator, lithium titanium oxide as the anode, and copper as the negative current collector. The approach is detailed in the June 28 issue of Scientific Reports. (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group.)

Singh thinks that the Rice team's battery is a game-changer because it is energy efficient for its volume and can be applied to objects of many different compositions and shapes.

Vilas Pol, a materials scientist at Argonne National Laboratory who was not affiliated with the study, agrees that the new design is exciting, describing it as "an exceptional and notable concept in the arena of battery design and integration."

But for now paint-on batteries are not quite ready to hit the shelves at your local hardware store. For one, the electrolyte separator layer is not yet oxygen stable. It would explode if it came into contact with air, so special conditions are necessary when creating the battery.

Singh says the team currently is working to make all the materials less reactive to air and moisture and more environmentally friendly. She adds that other groups are working on developing paint-on solar cells. Then, she envisions "paintable solar cells on top of paintable solar batteries." Houses could become solar-energy capture-and-storage devices.

Acer launches 116inch Sandy Bridge TravelMate B113

4GB of RAM, half a TB of storage, Sandy Bridge and an 11.6-inch 1366 x 768 panel starting at €450 (about $563), sounds like a pretty sweet deal on a last-gen ultrabook right? Well, Acer's TravelMate B1113 is actually brand new and, as you dig a little deeper into the specs, this one sounds more like a rather hefty netbook. And we do mean hefty -- this laptop apparently tips the scales at 1.88 Kg, which puts it a touch over the four pound mark. 4.1 pounds certainly isn't shoulder busting, but it's a solid half a pound more than you'd expect from a machine of this size. Then there's the fact that the base model ships with a 1.4Ghz Celeron, and the top shelf €560 version (roughly $700) only sports a 1.5GHz Core i3. We haven't been able to dig up the dimensions on this sucker, but the press pics don't make it look particularly bulky. We can only assume, given its considerable weight and diminutive size, that the chassis is made of cast iron. On the plus side, it does have a matte screen... that's gotta count for something, right?

Kaize my cat goes to be a blood donor - Shannon's Pet-Sitting

Kaize

Kaize my Tuxedo

I was all excited! I had met the staff of the Animal Emergency Treatment Center of Grayslake at the Family Pet Expo at Arlington Race track this past?March. They needed Dogs & Cats as blood donors for their blood bank.

What are the Requirements?

CATS:

*Greater than 10 pounds, 1-7 years of age, current on vaccinations and Feline Leukemia/Feline Immunodeficiency Virus negative, indoor only, in good health, no history of breeding or previous blood transfusions, and must have a good disposition.
?

My 4 year old cat Kaize is the ideal candidate for it! She is just as sweet & social as can be. ?She is 4 years old & in purrfect health! ?I figured it was a great way to ?Give Back? & help out other peoples pets. ?So I signed her up for the program.

?

How Do We Thank You?
?
Our blood donors are heroes and deserve special treatment!? They receive the following:

  • $25 credit towards AETC hospital services for each donation
  • ID tag and?bandana?letting everyone know he/she is a blood donor
  • Annual screening bloodwork?until retirement at our expense
  • Complete physical examination?and RBC count at each donation
  • Blood products at no charge for the donor?s lifetime
  • All the?cookies?and?hugs?your pet can handle
  • Most importantly, the satisfaction that you and your pet are?saving lives with each donation!

?

At our first scheduled visit Kaize was to get a physical exam, blood typed & blood screen panel done. ?The technicican came into the exam room, explained how the screening process works, gave me a hand out on it with information & took Kaize in back. ?She returned about 10 minutes later with Kaize and told me she has Type ?A? blood. There is Type ?A? (Common), Type ?B? (less common) & Type ?AB? (rare). ?However, Kaize didn?t pass the physical exam portion because the technician told me they heard a 2/6 grade heart murmur. The only way she can continue the screen process & be allowed in the donor program is if she is screened & cleared by a cardiologist which I?d have to pay for.

I love my cats to death ? they are my kids. I?d do anything for them & only want the best for them. But thanks to my medical training I know that this news is nothing to panic or freak out about. ?I never saw or even met the veterinarian who supposedly heard the murmur. I?ve seen it first hand ?where one vet hears something & another doesn?t. I?m not about to run out & spend in upwards of $500+ to have her referred & seen by a cardiologist so she can be cleared to be a blood donor for a clinic that is 45 minutes away based on the opinion of a vet I never saw or met!

Kaize was just seen by her vet in April for her annual exam & vaccinations. She was given the all clear. So I made an appointment to have my vet see her & get their opinion. I?m willing to bet even if they do hear something they are going to just keep an eye on it & monitor it themselves. As she is only 4 years old & asymptomatic. If my vet recommends Kaize see a cardiologist I will make an appointment with one. So much for trying to do a good deed huh? LOL

So the following morning I?called AETC to find out of a report of last nights exam & findings will be sent to my vet. I was told they talked to the technician and a report was not written & nothing was typed up because it was found upon physical exam & the screening didn?t go any further. But they could give me the details over the phone. REALLY!? Free or not an animal is in your clinic, gets blood typed & has a physical exam but you don?t put in a report or type anything into your system about your findings?!

A heart murmur is an abnormal heart sound caused by the vibration of turbulent blood flow. Normally, blood flow is laminar and very quiet. Having a heart murmur is not itself an illness or disease. It is a characterization given to an abnormal sound heard upon auscultation over the region of the heart. Cats of any age, breed or gender can be born with or later develop heart murmurs. Many affected cats show no outward signs of having heart murmurs. In fact, most murmurs are detected incidentally during routine veterinary check-ups. When heart murmurs do accompany clinical signs, generally there is something more serious going on with the animal?s heart and the murmur is a consequence of ? not a cause of ? that underlying condition.

Murmurs are a clinical finding that cannot be ?prevented? or even ?treated? in the normal sense of those terms. The underlying cause of the murmur must be found. Many heart murmurs will never require medical or surgical management, even if they are very pronounced. Minor murmurs can often be managed with exercise and/or dietary change. Surgical procedures may be available for cats with more serious heart conditions causing their murmurs, although presently surgery is more commonly done in dogs.

I?m very interested to see what my veterinarian has to say about all of this when we see him Saturday July 7th!

Two years later?

I had my own office. I was a manager. Manager of half of the customer service representatives. I got a pay increase, health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, paid vacations, the whole working man?s gig. I had more money that I ever thought I?d have in my savings account. Shit, I had a savings account! I had enough money to buy a new car, a new TV, I got a cell phone, a good one, the kind that had the game Snake on it, a new sofa, and a new computer. Not that crappy thing Xavier gave to me years back, but one that was really fast, held a lot more memory, and I was able to afford DSL, a new thing to connect to and surf the internet faster.

I wore suits to work. Nice shoes, a crisp tie, pressed slacks, a form fitting blazer, and my hair was clean cut. Even when I got home from work, I didn?t immediately get into my pajamas like I used to. I?d loosen my tie, take off my jacket, and cook myself a good steak, some steamed vegetables, and drink a glass of wine. I gained twenty pounds.

I hung out with my coworkers a lot. We?d go to bars or restaurants after work, eat things that were more expensive that fast food hamburgers and sodas. We?d talk about the new company program implemented the week before, the new girl in accounting, or planned a weekend to Vegas.

Five days a week, woke up at 6 in the morning, got to work by 7:50, went to lunch at 12:35, left work at 3:30, met up with my coworkers somewhere, eat or drink, for a couple of hours, and then got home by 8pm. Watched TV for a couple more, fell asleep, got up at 6 and did the same thing. On the weekends, I?d meet up with coworkers and drink more, eat more, talk to girls more, and then wait for Monday to come around to start it all over again.

Two years, that was my life.?I lived comfortably. I was content. It was all a blur.

The physics of going viral

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

Researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have been able, for the first time, to watch viruses infecting individual bacteria by transferring their DNA, and to measure the rate at which that transfer occurs. Shedding light on the early stages of infection by this type of virus?a bacteriophage?the scientists have determined that it is the cells targeted for infection, rather than the amount of genetic material within the viruses themselves, that dictate how quickly the bacteriophage's DNA is transferred.

"The beauty of our experiment is we were able to watch individual viruses infecting individual bacteria,"says Rob Phillips, the Fred and Nancy Morris Professor of Biophysics and Biology at Caltech and the principal investigator on the new study. "Other studies of the rate of infection have involved bulk measurements. With our methods, you can actually watch as a virus shoots out its DNA."

The new methods and results are described in a paper titled "A Single-Molecule Hershey?Chase Experiment," which will appear in the July 24 issue of the journal Current Biology and currently appears online. The lead authors of that paper, David Van Valen and David Wu, completed the work while graduate students in Phillips's group.

In the well-known 1952 Hershey-Chase experiment, Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase of the Carnegie Institution of Washington in Cold Spring Harbor convincingly confirmed earlier claims that DNA?and not protein?was the genetic material in cells. To prove this, the researchers used bacteriophages, which are able to infect bacteria using heads of tightly bundled DNA coated in a protein shell. Hershey and Chase radiolabeled sulfur, contained in the protein shell but not in the DNA, and phosphorous, found in the DNA but not in the protein shell. Then they let the bacteriophages infect the bacterial cells. When they isolated the cells and analyzed their contents, they found that only the radioactive phosphorous had made its way into the bacteria, proving that DNA is indeed the genetic material. The results also showed that, unlike the viruses that infect humans, bacteriophages transmit only their genetic information into their bacterial targets, leaving their "bodies" behind.

"This led, right from the get-go, to people wondering about the mechanism?about how the DNA gets out of the virus and into the infected cell," Phillips says. Several hypotheses have focused on the fact that the DNA in the virus is under a tremendous amount of pressure. Indeed, previous work has shown that the genetic material is under more pressure within its protein shell than champagne experiences in a corked bottle. After all, as Phillips says, "There are 16 microns [16,000 nanometers] of DNA in a tiny 50-nanometer-sized shell. It's like taking 500 meters of cable from the Golden Gate Bridge and putting it in the back of a FedEx truck."

Phillips's group wanted to find out whether that pressure plays a dominant role in transferring the DNA. Instead, he says, "What we discovered is that the thing that mattered most was not the pressure in the bacteriophage, but how much DNA was in the bacterial cell."

This video begins with a lambda bacteriophage attached to an E. coli cell with the phage's DNA labeled with a fluorescent dye. The phage injects its viral DNA into the cell, and as the ejection proceeds, the dye molecules are transferred. Once inside the cell, the dye redistributes to the bacterium's genome, causing the whole cell to light up. Credit: Caltech

The researchers used a fluorescent dye to stain the DNA of two mutants of a bacteriophage known as lambda bacteriophage?one with a short genome and one with a longer genome?while that DNA was still inside the phage. Using a fluorescence microscope, they traced the glowing dye to see when and over what time period the viral DNA transferred from each phage into an E. coli bacterium. The mean ejection time was about five minutes, though that time varied considerably.

This was markedly different from what the group had seen previously when they ran a similar experiment in a test tube. In that earlier setup, they had essentially tricked the bacteriophages into ejecting their DNA into solution?a task that the phages completed in less than 10 seconds. In that case, once the phage with the longer genome had released enough DNA to make what remained inside the phage equal in length to the shorter genome, the two phages ejected DNA at the same rate. Therefore, Phillips's team reasoned, it was the amount of DNA in the phage that determined how quickly the DNA was transferred.

But Phillips says, "What was true in the test tube is not true in the cell." E. coli cells contain roughly 3 million proteins within a box that is roughly one micron (1,000 nanometers) on each side. Less than 10 nanometers separate each protein from its neighbors. "There's no room for anything else," Phillips says. "These cells are really crowded."

And so, when the bacteriophages try to inject their DNA into the cells, the factor that limits the rate of transfer is how jam-packed those cells are. "In this case," Phillips says, "it had more to do with the recipient, and less to do with the pressure that had built up inside the phage."

Looking toward the future, Phillips is interested in using the methods he and his team have developed to study different types of bacteriophages. He also wants to investigate various molecules that could be helping to actively pull the viral DNA into the cells. In the case of a bacteriophage called T7, for instance, previous work has shown that the host cell actually grabs onto the DNA and begins making copies of its genes before the virus has even delivered all the DNA into the cell. "We're curious whether that kind of mechanism is in play with the lambda bacteriophage," Phillips says.

The current findings have implications for the larger question of how biomolecules like DNA and proteins cross membranes in general, and not just into bacteria. Cells are full of membranes that divide them into separate compartments and that separate entire cells from the rest of the world. Much of the business of cellular life involves getting molecules across those barriers. "This process that we've been studying is one of the most elementary examples of what you could call polymer translocation or getting macromolecules across membranes," Phillips says. "We are starting to figure out the physics behind that process."

Afghanistan Violence: Insurgent Attacks Kill 10 Police Officers In Past 24 Hours

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Insurgent attacks in several parts of Afghanistan have killed 10 police officers over 24 hours, officials said Wednesday.

Warming weather in the summer usually brings an uptick in insurgent activity, but the surge this year is more than expected. Data from the NATO military coalition in Afghanistan show that attacks increased sharply in May compared with same time of year in 2011, from around 2,500 incidents to around 3,000. Statistics for June were not yet available.

In the south, four officers were killed when they responded to an explosion in Musa Qala district on Wednesday, said provincial spokesman Daoud Ahmadi. No one was killed in the first blast, but a second, apparently remote-controlled, bomb hit the policemen when they got to the scene to investigate.

In Herat province in the west, an ambush killed four policemen on patrol in Ghoryan district late Tuesday, said provincial government spokesman Noor Khan.

Also, in Kunduz province in the north, two police officers were killed when their truck hit a roadside bomb early Wednesday, said Kunduz province police chief Gen. Samihullah Qatrah.

'Wild Things' author spoke of desire to kill Bush

By Kurt Schlosser

In one of his final interviews, celebrated children's book author Maurice Sendak said he fantasized about killing former President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

The "Where the Wild Things Are" author and illustrator, who died on May 8 at age 83, spoke with Gary Groth for an interview in The Comics Journal. A preview of the interview was published last month.

The famously cranky Sendak?spoke at length about his comics career,?his life and times, and blowing up the president.

"Bush was president, I thought, 'Be brave. Tie a bomb to your shirt. Insist on going to the White House,'" Sendak told Groth. "And I wanna have a big hug with the vice president, definitely. And his wife, and the president, and his wife, and anybody else that can fit into the love hug.

"And then we?ll blow ourselves up, and I?d be a hero," Sendak said. "To hell with the kiddie books. He killed Bush. He killed the vice president. Oh my God. ... It would have been a very brave and wonderful thing. But I didn?t do it; I didn?t do it."

Eric Reynolds, associate publisher at Fantagraphics Books, where Groth is founder and president, said Tuesday that they've seen quite a bit of outrage on Twitter and a few?conservative blogs. "I saw a tweet just a few minutes ago that said, 'I wish I'd read and collected Sendak's books as a kid so I could burn them now.'"

Sendak certainly never shied from expressing his outrage at numerous things. In an interview with The Guardian last fall, he railed against everything from e-books to the American political right to Gwyneth Paltrow.

"Anyone who has watched Sendak's infamous interview on the 'Colbert Report' (or read his books, for that matter), should recognize that not only was he cranky, he had a razor-sharp wit and a very dark sense of humor," Reynolds said. "He was 83 years old when he gave this interview [to Groth]. He was at the point in his life where he clearly didn't give a damn about propriety; he could speak his mind and clearly enjoyed provocation. I see these comments as part and parcel of his personality, not as a legitimate, actionable, treasonous threat."
