This summer, the Technological Advisory Council of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will consider again the rapidly changing face of telecommunications. Last year, it discussed the transition away from the ?Plain Old Telephone Service? (POTS) provided by the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) for more than 100 years. Among the Council?s findings: By 2014 US VoIP will account for 42.5% of all U.S. access lines. The panel recommended that the FCC take steps to expedite the transition from the PSTN, with a target date of 2018.
