Morgan Stanley's Facebook analyst: sober man in world of hype

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Scott Devitt has long stood out for being cautious in a world of Internet bulls.

In the more than 12 years that he has covered Internet companies as a Wall Street analyst, Devitt has developed a measured approach to a sector that often succumbs to hype.

Devitt, who replaced star Internet analyst Mary Meeker at Morgan Stanley in 2010, was one of the few analysts to cut his price target for Google in January after the company's fourth-quarter earnings missed analyst expectations by more than $1 a share. In February Devitt downgraded Amazon to equal weight from overweight, while the majority of analysts had a buy or strong buy on the stock.

And Devitt once insisted that his then-employer skip underwriting a dot-com bubble era IPO because he was not convinced the company could compete with a larger rival.

But all those contrarian calls pale next to the one he made just days before Facebook priced its $16 billion initial public offering. That one has become the subject of industry debate, regulatory scrutiny and investor lawsuits.

Devitt was one of a number of analysts to lower his revenue and earnings expectations for the social media giant after the company informed analysts that it was dropping its quarterly and annual revenue guidance. Facebook also issued an amended prospectus cautioning that the shift of its users to mobile platforms could have a negative impact on revenue growth.

Such a move was highly unusual because it occurred just days before Facebook's highly anticipated IPO, whose lead underwriter was Morgan Stanley, Devitt's employer. The investment bank not only had control over the process, but over 38 percent of Facebook shares being sold.

Devitt's and other analysts' revised revenue forecasts were shared via phone calls with institutional investors, but not with retail investors, before the stock began trading publicly.

That in turn raised questions over whether the playing field was skewed against Main Street investors from the start and sparked lawsuits.

It is a limelight that Devitt is not used to and doesn't feel comfortable with, according to people who know him.

"On one hand we could say this is fantastic that the analyst had the guts on the eve of the biggest IPO in history to say something bearish," said Josh Brown, author of the blog The Reformed Broker. "On the other hand, the only ones who were on that call were a handful of institutional investors," said Brown, who does not know Devitt.

Devitt did not return calls or e-mails for comment.

Morgan Stanley said in a statement that it forwarded Facebook's revised prospectus to all of its retail and institutional clients and that its IPO procedures were in "compliance with all applicable regulations." The company did not respond to questions about why it did not tell all its clients, including small investors, about the forecast change.

On Thursday, Facebook's stock closed at $29.60 per share, down 22 percent from its offering price of $38, but up 5 percent for the day.

"FISH OUT OF WATER"

When Devitt replaced Meeker, he had no desire to become as big a name as was Meeker - who was dubbed "Queen of the Internet" in the industry - according to two people who know Devitt well but asked to remain anonymous because their employers do not allow them to speak to the press.

"He's not loud or showy in any way," said one of the people who is close to Devitt.

While friends say Devitt is frugal, public property records show that last summer he and his wife, Katherine, purchased a 4,800-square-foot historic home set on 2.3 acres in Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey, for $1.575 million. Even so, Devitt, a 39-year-old father of three, takes the bus to Manhattan every day.

He often keeps the same cars for years, friends said, and currently drives a minivan. He once sold a Saturn that was so old that the friend who bought it joked it wouldn't make it beyond his own property, according to the second unnamed source, a former colleague.

"He's kind of a fish out of water in New York - family is very important to him," said the person, who is close to Devitt.

Devitt nearly left the analyst world in 2007 when he accepted the job of chief financial officer at online jewelry retailer Blue Nile Inc. But Devitt changed his mind because he did not want to relocate his family to Seattle, according to a news report published at the time.

His approach to analyzing companies might also strike some in the world of New York bank analysts as different, too. Devitt, sources said, often takes time to talk to investors about his recommendations and why he made them. He also solicits feedback from the people he works with, even junior level colleagues, according to people who know him.

Devitt has a history of being cautious. In 2007 and 2008, many analysts were bullish on e-commerce provider GSI Commerce as it went on an acquisition tear, but not Devitt, said Michael Rubin, founder and former CEO of GSI, which was bought by eBay for $2.4 billion in 2011.

"Others just liked us for the fact that we were doing acquisitions, but Scott wanted to see how things played out," said Rubin, founder and CEO of Kynetic LLC.

Rubin saw this as a challenge. "I paid more attention to what he had to say," he said. "He was very thoughtful about all of his research."

GOOD AND BAD CALLS

Devitt was born in Massachusetts and is an avid Red Sox fan, according to friends. But he mostly grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, where he played baseball in high school and then in college for the then-Division II University of North Florida's Ospreys, where he played first base.

"He always had his nose to grindstone," said Dusty Rhodes, who coached Devitt and is now the hitting coach for Major League Baseball's Milwaukee Brewers.

Devitt was always on time for practice, which often involved being at the gym by 5:00 a.m. for 90 minutes of lifting weights or running sprints. "If they couldn't run a mile in under six minutes, they had to do it again until they could," Rhodes said. "I ran them hard." But Devitt never flinched.

After earning an M.B.A. at University of Georgia's Terry College of Business, Devitt worked as a financial analyst at Dell, according to his LinkedIn profile - which appears to have changed at least once since the Facebook IPO to add to his specialties "resistance of the institutional imperative."

As a teenager and later in college, Devitt helped with the family sporting goods business, The Hatman Inc, which sells vintage sports jerseys and hats, according to his LinkedIn page.

Devitt is a fan of Warren Buffett; he even has a license plate holder that reads "In Berkshire Hathaway we trust," according to one of the people close to him. His Amazon.com reading list include two items on Charles Munger, a value investor and Buffett partner whom Devitt's friends say he greatly admires.

Munger has been publicly bearish on Facebook.

"I don't invest in what I don't understand. And I don't want to understand Facebook," Munger told CNN in early May.

Devitt's cautiousness has worked against him. He has underweight ratings or equal-weight ratings on 15 of the 23 companies he follows, meaning that investors should either hold or sell those 15 stocks.

But for the past two years, the companies he has underweight have returned 19 percent, almost 8 percentage points more than the absolute return for all the companies he covers combined, according to Thomson Reuters StarMine data.

StarMine gives Devitt three out of five stars on his recommendations and two out of five stars on his earnings estimates, an average rating.

Some of his calls have been spot on, even if a bit early. In February 2011 he downgraded Netflix from overweight to equal-weight. Shares had been trading at $240.79 at the time. That July the stock hit a high of $298.73, up 19 percent. Devitt didn't sweat it, a person close to him said.

By the end of the year, Netflix was floundering after changing its pricing and its decision to split its streaming and DVD businesses. Shares now trade around $67.46.

Sometimes, though, Devitt can be slow to downgrade a company, according to a Reuters review of his reports. In March, online deals company Groupon downwardly revised revenue and earnings it had reported a month earlier and its stock dropped 17 percent. Devitt called the announcement "a mild hiccup in Groupon's compelling long-term story," and kept an equal-weighting on the company.

The stock is down 27 percent since April 1.

But Devitt may yet be right about Groupon. The Chicago-based company is piloting a system that allows merchants to process credit card payments for as little as 1.8 percent, in some cases significantly below what merchants pay credit card companies per transaction. The hope is that the new payment system will drive greater loyalty from merchants to sponsor more of its daily deals and provide another revenue stream for Groupon.

Devitt has also found himself at odds with investment banking interests at the companies he has worked for. When online retailer Buy.com was planning to go public for the second time in 2005, Devitt advised the firm he was working for, Legg Mason Capital Markets (now part of Stifel, Nicolaus & Company) against underwriting the deal, the former colleague said.

The firm did not heed Devitt's advice, but "it takes a lot of guts for an analyst to (try to) kill a deal," the former colleague said. Buy.com eventually withdrew its IPO plans.

In May, Devitt initiated coverage of Millennial Media with only an equal weight, even though Morgan Stanley was the lead underwriter of the deal. Similarly, when Devitt initiated coverage of Groupon, for which Morgan Stanley was the lead IPO underwriter, he gave it an equal weighting.

"A lot of analysts play the game because of their relationships with the investment bank, but Scott tells you what he thinks," Rubin said.

LGBT Investors Express Confidence About Retirement Goals ...

SAN FRANCISCO, May 30, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) ?
Investors are faced with complex challenges when it comes to retirement,
including: how to save enough to feel comfortable, where to invest
retirement savings, understanding and creating retirement income
options, and when and where to retire. LGBT investors (lesbian, gay,
bisexual, and transgender) face these same challenges as well as several
unique ones, including those stemming from a lack of federal marriage
and inheritance rights.

Yet in a recent nationwide Wells Fargo retirement survey, LGBT
non-retirees reported a higher level of confidence in their retirement
savings, compared to the general population. In the survey, 61% of LGBT
non-retirees felt confident they would have enough saved by the time
they retire to live the lifestyle they want throughout their retirement,
significantly higher than 53% cited by the general population. Despite
this confidence, over a third (36%) of LGBT non-retirees expect they
will need to work during retirement in order to afford their lifestyle
(only slightly lower than the 41% of the general population).

The Accredited Domestic Partnership Advisor (ADPA) program was created,
through a partnership with the College for Financial Planning, to
educate advisors about the unique needs and financial considerations of
domestic partners. Financial advisors who earn this designation are
well-equipped to work with domestic partners and lesbian, gay, bisexual,
and transgender (LGBT) clients to develop a thoughtful approach to
meeting their financial goals. Wells Fargo was the first in the industry
to create this program and today has more than 100 ADPA-certified
financial advisors nationwide.

Approximately one in ten LGBT respondents have heard of ADPAs ?
financial advisors with training in financial and retirement planning
specifically for LGBT domestic partners. Upon hearing a description of
ADPA advisor training and designation, most gay men (60%) and lesbians
(72%) say these credentials are important to them when working with a
financial advisor.

?Each investor has different priorities, needs, and life goals, and
domestic partners and same-sex couples often have added concerns and
questions about their unique financial situation,? said Kyle Young,
Financial Advisor and Vice-President, Investment Officer for Wells Fargo
Advisors. ?It?s especially important for LGBT investors to find
financial advisors who are acutely aware of the challenges, laws, and
regulations that impact their investment planning needs. This additional
knowledge affords clients encouragement in knowing that their needs will
be heard, understood, and thoughtfully explored.?

The median amount LGBT non-retirees have saved for retirement is only
17% of what they believe they actually need. LGBT non-retirees believe
they will need to save at least $900,000 in order to retire, and have
saved on average about $150,000. And despite this need to save more for
retirement, three out of five (62%) of non-retired LGBT?s surveyed have
not increased their retirement savings allocation in the past year.

More than half (54%) of all LGBT respondents cite being recognized as
equal citizens by society and the law as the most important reason for
legalizing gay marriage. One in five (19%) say that having legal rights
and medical decision-making on behalf of one?s partner is most
important. Only 7% said legalizing gay marriage was not important to
them.

LGBT respondents overwhelmingly reported they would find value in
information and advice on investing and preparing for retirement.
Additionally, only about a quarter of the LGBT respondents currently had
a detailed written plan for their finances in retirement.

About the Survey

On behalf of Wells Fargo Retirement, Richard Day Research conducted an
online survey between December 2nd and December 18, 2011 among adults
ages 25-75 who identified themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or
transgender (LGBT, n=505). Comparisons were made to a similar national
online sample of n=1,190.

Chrome Berlin - PRO Laptop Bag

"Hey Sara," I called to my colleague while exploring the expansive space inside Chrome's Berlin - PRO laptop bag ($220 direct). "See if you can fit into this bag!" My joke fell flat probably because the Berlin doesn't look nearly as big as it is from the outside (or perhaps because my petite co-worker had had enough of me that day).

The Chrome Berlin - Pro easily fits laptops of any size, plus all the cords, cables, and accessories you could ever need ? plus a change of clothes, your lunch, a tablet, and much more (read on to find out what I crammed into it). At 15 by 20 by 10 inches (HWD), when fully expanded, the Berlin's volume measures 25 liters!

The "pro" part of the name refers to the fact that this bag can be used by professional bike messengers, and the Berlin part, I presume, is a nod toward the very German looking style. The Berlin is a no-frills bag, available in black or gray, with a dark red lining. It's coolly edgy, but uncomplicated.

Massive as it is, the Chrome Berlin manages to be comfortable, even when you pack it to the brim because it balances weight both vertically down your back, as well as horizontally across the front of your shoulders and chest by way of a thickly padded strap. The strap fastens with one of Chrome's signature seatbelt buckles, which is very cool, but contributes a considerable amount of weight to the bag's 4.5 pounds. Two additional straps?one of which tucks away into a Velcro slot when not in use?can further secure the Berlin to your frame when the load you're hauling seems otherwise impossibly cumbersome. With the Berlin, it can be done!

To test the bag's capacity, I first packed roughly 18 pounds of clothing (I didn't want to mess with anything fragile just yet) into the Chrome Berlin - PRO and rode seven miles on my bike to a friend's house. This test turned out to be more about my own strength than the bag's, because the Berlin did its job to a tee. On my second trial, I loaded it up with a 13-inch laptop in a sleeve for extra protection, a camera that was also housed in a padded case, an iPad with rubber bumper, my purse, a smartphone, several cords and chargers, and a sweater. Not only did I tote this load without buckling, I got it through airport security, too! For the few weeks that I rode and walked around with the Berlin - PRO, there was nothing that it wouldn't fit or that I couldn't carry if it was in the bag. One Berlin owner says he once carried a chainsaw in this incredible bag! I don't doubt him for a second.

As much as you can pack this bag to the gills, the Berlin - PRO doesn't have a cushioned compartment specifically for a laptop. Two Velcro-secured pouches do a better job of protecting smaller electronics (think smartphone sized), but notebook owners should definitely use a protective sleeve.

Cycling commuters who carry a lot of stuff can't go wrong with Chrome's Berlin - PRO bag. Car and subway commuters will undoubtedly find the Berlin way too big for their average needs. At $220, the bag is an investment, but one worth making if you fit the Berlin profile.

Michelle Obama's 'Daily Show' Appearance: First Lady Discusses President's Past, Joe Biden

First Lady Michelle Obama weighed in on recent revelations about her husband's past drug use on Tuesday, acknowledging that President Obama realized at a young age that he "could do more with his life."

During an appearance on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" to promote her new cookbook, the First Lady was asked by host Jon Stewart about the president's high school and college years. An excerpt released last week from David Maraniss's forthcoming biography of the president contained details about Obama's marijuana use as a teenager. Stewart joked that the stories about the president as a young man resembled the "script of a Cheech and Chong movie."

While the First Lady didn't directly address the claims in Maraniss' book, she did say that her husband underwent a change during his college years.

"By the time he was in college, like so many young people, he realized that he could do more with his life," Obama told Stewart. "He had a mother that was always saying you're so gifted, you're so talented, slap him on the head, 'get yourself together.'"

She continued: "When he lost his father, that was one of those click-in moments. And he really buckled down, he transferred schools, went to Columbia, and thought about how to use his life to the fullest."

Obama also commented on her relationship with Vice President Joe Biden, who Stewart joked was like an uncle who brings guns to family events.

"I love Joe," Obama said. "He's a great vice president and he's a great friend. My kids hang around him and I'm good with it."

Tuesday marked Obama's first appearance on "The Daily Show" since becoming First Lady. Her last stop was in 2008, when she spoke with Stewart in the final month of her husband's presidential campaign.

3 Incredibly Valuable Tips that You Should Use For Your Business ...

New Era Hats It?s incredibly exciting when you decide to actually take the leap and start your own business. This is the most natural response you can have because you?re going to be experiencing lots of new emotions. It?s possible that you are going to feel like you have a higher level of control over yourself, which is completely true. If you want to make the most of your hard work and dedication, then get educated about small business operations. Figure out which things apply to you and then use them. Here are a few things that you can do to improve your own small business.

Everybody who wants to build a business of their own needs to find some sort of support. Just because you have a small business does not mean it is any easier. This isn?t a luxury that is available to the solo entrepreneur. You need to actually work hard to figure out a way to support yourself,, even if that support is small and doesn?t happen all the time. You are going to need to do what you?ve got to do and lots of people have had to do it all by themselves. You?ll absolutely benefit from support and advice, even if that comes from somebody who cares and acts as a loving sounding board. Offline businesses need a lot more planning than online businesses. Of course a serious and complex web based business may suffer more from a lack of planning. No matter what sort of business you have or how modest its beginnings might be, you can benefit from taking the time to plan out your business. There are all sorts of benefits that come from doing this and it definitely is in your best interest to do so. Reaching your goals is going to be so much easier if you can plan out your tasks. If you are able to do this, you are going to see things that you might have missed, This is part of the success mindset and effective planning is done for a reason. So don?t ignore doing this for your business?even if you are an affiliate marketer.

There is quite a lot of excitement and hope that comes from the decision to start your own business, whether its online or offline. Starting something new and promising can offer you a sort of excitement that is really difficult to beat. Then comes the part of getting started and what to do. There are so many variables that are going to determine what you have to do and where you will be doing it. Take things a step at a time and find information that talks about this. It?s easy to think that there are thousands of things that need to be done right now but this isn?t true. Focus on the bigger picture and work through your business model to set up some workable goals.

When you?re in the early stages of building a small business, though, you need to be discriminating about the information that you learn online. Typically people have good intentions and aren?t operating with the goal of leading you astray. The problem with the Internet is that so much of the information has become outdated. This means that you always need to look for a publishing date for the things you read.

Hamels tops Mets for 8th straight win

    By RICK FREEMAN

    AP Sports Writer

    Associated Press Sports

    updated 5:08 p.m. ET May 28, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) - Ty Wigginton helped Cole Hamels keep the Philadelphia Phillies rolling a day after they faced another injury to a critical player.

With Roy Halladay's status still uncertain, Wigginton drove in a career-high six runs with a homer and a pair of two-out hits and Hamels won his eighth straight decision as Philadelphia beat the New York Mets 8-4 Monday.

"You know when you miss someone like Halladay, you're missing him, but there's nothing you can do about it," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "It might get hard, but we're definitely not going to fold tent. We're going to try to outplay everybody."

Halladay was pulled Sunday after two innings because of shoulder soreness. The Phillies say they will send the right-hander to see a doctor on Tuesday. The two-time Cy Young winner is 1-3 in his last five starts.

Hamels (8-1) pitched well enough to match St. Louis' Lance Lynn for the major league lead in wins. He said he did not place any extra pressure on himself because of Halladay's situation.

"We're not going to put any added stress on what we have to do," Hamels said.

Hamels struck out six and allowed seven hits in eight innings to help the Phillies win for the fifth time in six games following a season-long four-game losing streak.

"He came in after the loss yesterday and did it again," Wigginton said. "Cole's been stepping up all year and he did it again today."

Scott Hairston and Vinny Rottino each hit tying two-run homers for the Mets, who had a three-game winning streak end.

"It was one of those days when they got better pitching and their bats were a little hotter," David Wright said.

Down 5-4, the Mets threatened in the eighth when pinch-hitter Andres Torres doubled. With one out and Torres on third, Daniel Murphy grounded out and then Wright also grounded out to end the inning. Wright has gone hitless in his last 14 at-bats, dropping his average to .373.

"David showed he's human, he can fall into a little funk just like everyone else," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "He's been so good for so long that you come to expect that he's always going to get a hit and we know that's not going to be the case."

Hamels said facing Wright took everything he had left. He finally retired the Mets star on a changeup, a pitch he hadn't intended to throw during the at-bat.

"If I would have thrown that any time earlier, I think he would have crushed it," Hamels said. "There's a reason he's hitting .380 or whatever. He's definitely a lot better hitter than the last couple of years."

Bobby Parnell (1-1) gave up a leadoff single to Jimmy Rollins in the seventh and Wigginton, who played for the Mets from 2002-2004, singled him home two outs later for a 5-4 lead.

Wigginton added a no-doubt, three-run homer to left in the ninth off Manny Acosta to blow open a close game and cap a day in which he went 3 for 3 with two walks. Wigginton also had a two-run double in the third.

"He had a big day today," Manuel said. "Did all the hittin' for us."

John Mayberry put the Phillies up 4-2 with a long home run to left field after Wigginton walked to lead off the sixth. It was the second and last hit Jonathon Niese gave up.

Niese left before any more damage could be done, having walked five and allowed four earned runs in five-plus innings while throwing 115 pitches on a sticky day. Mets pitchers had combined for 28 scoreless innings before the Phillies scored.

In the Mets third, Justin Turner got a two-out hit of his own, then sprained his ankle in a rundown.

Rob Johnson was held up at third when Philadelphia right fielder Pence fired home, and Turner tried to take second. Catcher Brian Schneider threw to second baseman Freddy Galvis to start the rundown, and shortstop Jimmy Rollins chased Turner back to first.

Turner lunged for the bag and tumbled into foul territory behind the base, where he writhed in pain as Mets staff came out to assist him. After about a minute, he was assisted off the field.

Wright moved to shortstop from third base, playing the position for the second time in his major league career. He played there in the eighth and ninth innings last Aug. 7, when Jose Reyes and Daniel Murphy were hurt in a game. In the fifth inning Monday, Wright went to his left to scoop a grounder and threw sharply to first, prompting cheers.

"Moving to a new position, you kind of have to go through everything in your mind like checkpoints. If the ball's hit here, I have to do this, and if the ball's hit there, I have to do that," Wright said. "I have to worry about base stealers, double plays, things I would not ordinarily have to worry about at third base."

NOTES: Jonathan Papelbon pitched the ninth for Philadelphia. ... Phillies C Carlos Ruiz was scratched from the lineup several hours before the first pitch and replaced by Schneider. ... Wright and Murphy both made fielding errors in the first inning, but Niese escaped with no damage. ... I'll Have Another trainer Doug O'Neill, owner Paul Reddam and jockey Mario Gutierrez plan to be at the Mets-Yankees game June 8 - less than 24 hours before their Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner takes his shot at the Triple Crown.

    The Keeper of Fish
Alan Fish (edited by Philip Salom)

    Keeping Carter
MA Carter (edited by Philip Salom)
    Puncher & Wattman Poetry

Poetry is popularly considered to be an art of the self. When the figure of the poet is parodied, it?s most often as an emo in a puffy shirt, a narcissistic creature of absurdly heightened sensibility. Like any caricature, it?s an image that is wildly incomplete and that, at the same time, contains an element of truth. Recently in the Boston Review, critic Marjorie Perloff acidly outlined the contours of ?a certain kind of prize winning, ?well-crafted? poem ? a poem the New Yorker would see fit to print and that would help its author get one of the ?good jobs? advertised by the Association of Writers & Writing Programs?.

According to Perloff, such a poem looks like this: ?1) irregular lines of free verse, with little or no emphasis on the construction of the line itself or on what the Russian Formalists called ?the word as such?; 2) prose syntax with lots of prepositional and parenthetical phrases, laced with graphic imagery or even extravagant metaphor (the sign of ?poeticity?); 3) the expression of a profound thought or small epiphany, usually based on a particular memory, designating the lyric speaker as a particularly sensitive person who really feels the pain, whether of our imperialist wars in the Middle East or of late capitalism or of some personal tragedy such as the death of a loved one.?

    Keepers -- cover

In Perloff?s anatomy, contemporary poetry is Romanticism?s inbred, decadent heir, delivered by way of the Confessionals to the contemporary creative writing market. The autobiographical self of the poet is central: it?s the poet?s sensitivity, his or her lived authenticity, that defines the authenticity of the poem. The formal aspects of the poem, ?the word as such?, retreats in importance to a secondary characteristic: it is the superficial plumage with which the poet conducts his or her courtship of the reader. The personality of the writer, as promoted on a million websites, is the ?branding? of the poem, a necessary attribute in a swollen and fiercely competitive market. Never has the author been less dead.

Perloff, highlighting the ?uncreative writing? of poets such as Kenny Goldsmith or the aleatory techniques of John Cage, points out that poetry includes avant-garde traditions that push hard against this self-centred ideology. However, the culture that valorises the poetic self might be challenged through proliferation as much as through erasure. The most famous exponent of this approach is the Portuguese poet Fernand Pessoa, the inventor of the heteronym. The heteronym is more than a pseudonym ? it?s the invention of an entire poetic personality, complete with biography, particular formal style and critical viewpoint. Pessoa produced, at last count, more than seventy.

Which brings me to Philip Salom?s recent trilogy, Keepers. The first collection, published in 2010, is Keepers (by ?Philip Salom?): a series of linked poems that forms an implicit narrative about the staff and students of an unnamed School of Arts. Theatrical, playful and sly, the book is above all a dazzling and deft celebration of poetic form, underlaid by a bass note of mortality that gives its mischievous shape-shifting unsettling depths. The Keeper of Fish and Keeping Carter emerge from the first book: they are heteronymic collections, respectively by Alan Fish and MA Carter, edited by Philip Salom. Alan Fish figures in Keepers, mostly in footnotes, as a general dogsbody and cleaner who lives in the campus basement; we learn that he is a poet and is planning to publish a book. Carter is more mysterious: in Salom?s forward, he strongly suggests that this heteronym, who writes poetry ?in secret?, is in fact a pseudonym.

    Keeper of Fish -- cover

For all the (slightly arch) editorial conceit, I?m not certain that these fictional selves quite qualify as heteronyms. Although both voices work a distinct mode or key, each seems the invention of a particular poetic consciousness. As George Steiner commented, Pessoa?s heteronyms were ?exceedingly strange?: ?For each of his ?voices?, Pessoa conceived a highly distinctive poetic idiom and technique, a complex biography, a context of literary influence and polemics and, most arrestingly of all, subtle interrelations and reciprocities of awareness.? Fish and Carter, although they share some of these characteristics, seem closer to what Pessoa called a ?semi-heteronym?. Speaking of the semi-heteronym Bernardo Soares, Pessoa says that ?his personality, although not my own, doesn?t differ from my own but is a mere mutilation of it?. In the case of the self-consciously misanthropic Carter and the alienated and melancholy Fish, mutilation seems like the proper adjective: their poems reveal that they are both, in different ways, damaged men.

What is unarguable is that this prismatic refraction of selves has been extraordinary liberating for Salom. Both collections are buoyed with a sense of lightness and freedom, a formal curiosity that expresses itself as a rhythmic and sonic joyousness in the DNA of the poems. If sometimes I felt that both the Carter and Fish collections lacked the continuous invention of Keepers, with some of the lesser poems thinning out into mere poetic fictions, the books have a linguistic and dramatic energy that makes you keep reading. And both collections include some fine poems. Fish, for instance, in the poem ?Dream for a Daughter?, meditates on the complex grief of watching his daughter grow up and become estranged from him, creating a startlingly ambiguous and spare emotional delicacy:

One of her wings has broken off
in my hands. I stare helplessly.

The stump of its shoulder root
    protruding like lamb?s horn

from her skin. She is so pale
and innocent she hasn?t noticed ?

In contrast, Carter?s voice is driven by anger. As he says, ?my flag is the choleric?. This results in some very funny poems (?Old Cunts?, for instance) in which outrage screws the language into pitiless focus, and a few, those in which wit or linguistic tension slackens, that are merely vicious. Mostly they sustain their own suspensions. In ?Jesus saves me?, Carter sardonically contemplates redemption while chopping onions, the onion tears, a purely physical response, paradoxically becoming a genuine expression of sadness. Many of the poems turn on violence ? political violence, murder ? a theme that bleeds into smaller, but equally significant, violences of the psyche. In the poem ?Drive In Screen?, for instance, representation itself becomes a kind of death:

It looked like Death in a strange
    white coat. It became Sybil
    tinnily through metal speakers
    propped on the car windows.
She was hideous. And she was
    everywhere. She was a window
the terrible transfer of her face
    smeared across it, the shattered
    glass of a shattered window
    her wrists dragged themselves
    Onto ?

Perhaps Salom?s proper antecedent, especially for Carter, is the John Berryman of ?Dream Songs?, and his alter ego, Henry. Like Berryman, Salom?s Carter works with comedic vexations, meditations that reach from the intimate to the metaphysical, a colloquial contempt, an encroaching despair that emerges as rage. The language is looser than Berryman?s, less wound around itself. This is, I think, partly a function of Salom?s prosaic punctuation, as opposed to Berryman?s emphatic dashes and ampersands.

    Keeping Carter -- cover

There are complex reflective games going on in the trilogy: as well as referencing each other, the poems reach forward and back in a continuous meditation on culture as historical memory, personal expression or social construction. Carter ? obsessed with Bach and Glenn Gould, the mathematically precise in tension with the improvised ? tends to look outward, commenting on the society around him. Fish, unlike Carter, has an identity in this complex fictional reality, but all the same declares he is ?anonymous. I learnt / myself from language?. He writes lyric poems about the incidents of his life ? the death of his wife through cancer, his daughter, his aquarium.

Both poets share a common elliptical perception (both liken cats, for instance, to inverted commas) and a pleasure in linguistic play. And both circle endlessly around dilemmas of masculinity, sexuality and relationship, which become the axes of an increasing anxiety and alienation. Neither is, by any means, a reliable narrator. As Carter says, ?The I is the biggest con artist in poetry?.

The Keepers trilogy as a whole is a full-frontal attack on the autobiographically authenticated poem that, all the same, often masquerades as precisely that kind of poem. Salom seems to be having his cake and eating it too. But what matters most is the language itself, the attention paid by Salom to ?the word as such?: at its best, this distils into a formal spikiness and liveliness that makes these collections an experience of perpetual surprise.
