Computer Technician and Media Services Specialist

IMT

Description

This position normally functions between the hours of 1:00 pm and 10:00 pm, Monday through Friday, and has dual responsibilities.
  1. Serve as a position in the Computer Technician area. This person works closely with the Manager of the Computer Technicians to support and maintain the faculty, staff, classroom and regional center computing environment.
  2. Assist in classroom media equipment support, and sound, lighting, and video for events on campus, on a day- to-day basis. This position will also assist with equipment installation and repairs. As a direct result of this job?s function, the class sessions and small events that happen on this campus are able to continue to carry out the mission of the Azusa Pacific University.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES FOR INFORMATION AND MEDIA SERVICES
  • On demand as directed by the IMT Support Desk, supervisor on-duty, work order, or as otherwise scheduled setup, install, configure, maintain, troubleshoot, effect repairs and provide solutions for IMT supported
    • Desktop computers (Windows and Macintosh)
    • Laptop computers (Windows and Macintosh)
    • Computer software
    • Media equipment
  • Entering and processing work orders and requests for both computers and media.
  • Assist with the training of APU faculty and staff on use of designated IMT supported equipment.
  • Attend and participate in IMT forums and meetings.
  • Through continuing education and training, stay current on emerging trends in information and media technologies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager of Computer Technicians or his/her designee.

COMPUTER TECHNICIAN SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Diagnose and solve hardware/network/software problems and provide suggested solutions.
  • Provide technical support for APU Regional Centers.
  • Provide user support by solving hardware/network/software issues as needed by the IMT Support Desk.
  • Provide user training as needed for University computer users.
  • Document solutions to common hardware/network/software problems.

MEDIA SERVICES SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Technical support of evening set-ups, including responding promptly and courteously to media equipment problems that arise during class sessions and small events.
  • Provide mentoring and coaching to student staff.
  • Operate equipment for productions.
  • Contribute to overall direction and strategies for IMT Media Services.
  • Contribute to overall internal planning sessions to ensure creative and appropriate events.

Education

BS in Computer Science/Information Technology or equivalent combination of experience and education.

Experience

1 year maintaining PCs, Macs, desktops, laptops, PDAs and networks, or related experience.

  • Ability to prioritize work on multiple concurrent projects, use good judgment and accomplish tasks under pressure with limited direct supervision.
  • Valid drivers license w/ a clean driving record

Computer Professional
  • Familiarity with setup, troubleshooting and configuration of various PDAs (Palm OS & WinCE).
  • Knowledge of creating, maintaining and supporting computer images.
  • Knowledge of basic networking and infrastructure technologies.
  • Knowledge of warranty repair process for HP and Apple computers and HP printers.
  • Some knowledge of
    • Ethernet and wireless networks
    • Internet Explorer,
    • Mac OS (9.x/OSX),
    • Microsoft Office suite,
    • Mozilla Firefox,
    • Norton AntiVirus and Utilities,
    • Norton Ghost.
    • TCP/IP
    • Windows 9x/NT/2000/XP/Vista.
  • Work with multiple types of cables, telephones, tools and hand trucks.
  • Knowledge of inside workings of Windows XP Professional and Windows Vista, including, but not limited to, imaging, locking down OS, security, group policy.
  • Ability to use the web to find drivers, additional help for computer problems and familiar with using Internet search engines to quickly find desired results.

Media Professional
  • Knowledge of audio visual equipment distribution, teleconferencing, sound production or equivalent, including supervision, especially
    • Video projectors,
    • DVD,
    • Small PA systems and
    • Televisions.
  • Knowledge of computing preferred, especially PowerPoint and connecting to video projector.
  • Knowledge of instructional technology hardware and software systems, personal computers and applications, and budgeting.

Mental Demands

PROBLEM SOLVING/INITIATIVE:
The position requires this person to deal with IMT customers and IMT staff on a regular basis to solve problems. The ability to absorb a large amount of information, quickly evaluate the nature of the problem and to provide a solution rapidly and decisively is essential. The problems encountered vary greatly and may require the ability to work as part of a team to find a resolution. Solutions may involve the arranging of tasks to be done or conducting negotiations with IMT customers until satisfaction is achieved.

LEVEL OF INDEPENDENCE
In order to function effectively, this person must have a high level of independence, show initiative, and be highly motivated. This must be done in a manner, which is consistent with the team management structure that is employed by the group.

INFLUENCE OF RESULTS
This person must recognize that much of the work is completed without direct supervision. This requires accuracy and integrity of work that will represent the mission and values of the IMT group.

OTHER REMARKS
This position requires someone who is totally committed to excellence in customer service, and who has a good understanding of Azusa Pacific University?s overall business, business structures and business practices.

This person will be required to support and uphold the IMT Strategic Directions.

To enable the Azusa Pacific University media and classroom functions to operate normally at all times, this person is required to be available by telephone for management, consultation and liaison with support, after normal working hours and on weekends. This may require considerable onsite presence to manage emergency situations.

Physical Demands

Repetitive hand motions at computer key board. Sitting and/or standing 5-6 hours per day. Must be able to listen and speak effectively on the telephone. This person will be required to conduct business at other offices on campus. The person must be able to reach, grasp, pull, bend, lift up to 50 lbs. occasionally.
