While teams still kick the tires on free agent acquisitions, the Dolphins are turning their attention to securing a long future with some of their own players.

Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that the team has started talking about long-term deals for tackle Jake Long, linebacker Cameron Wake and wide receiver Brian Hartline. All three players are entering the final years of their contracts and taking care of deals now would keep the Dolphins from finding themselves in a tough spot next year.

Long, who voided the final year of his rookie deal, is set to make $11.2 million this season and he?ll likely be looking for a deal in the neighborhood of the one Joe Thomas got from the Browns last summer. Thomas got a seven-year, $84 million deal with $44 million guaranteed. That made him the highest-paid offensive tackle in the game, something that Long would probably be shooting for in a deal with the Dolphins.

Wake signed a four-year, $2.3 million deal when he jumped to Miami from the CFL in 2009. With 28 sacks in his first three seasons, there?s no question he?s outperformed the contract and that he?d be looking for a sizable jump in his next deal. The Dolphins could franchise either Long or Wake if no deal gets done before the end of next season, but they?d be in a tough spot if they can?t get one of them signed ahead of that point.

Hartline is in the final year of the deal he signed after being selected in the fourth round of the 2009 Draft. He?s caught 35 passes last season, although he could be in position to catch a lot this year with the move to Joe Philbin?s offense and no Brandon Marshall on the roster. If he does, getting him signed now would likely make it a better deal for the Dolphins.

Running back Reggie Bush, cornerback Sean Smith and defensive end Randy Starks are some of the other Dolphins entering the final years of their contracts.

Panel backs sharing studies of lab-made bird flu

NEW YORK (AP) ? The U.S. government's biosecurity advisers said Friday they support publishing research studies showing how scientists made new easy-to-spread forms of bird flu because the studies, now revised, don't reveal details bioterrorists could use.

The decision could end a debate that began in December when the government took the unprecedented step of asking the scientists not to publicize all the details of their work.

The research, by two scientific teams ? one in Wisconsin, the other in the Netherlands ? was funded by the United States. It was an effort to learn more about the potential threat from bird flu in Asia. The virus so far doesn't spread easily among people. But the new lab-made viruses spread easily among ferrets, suggesting they would also spread among humans.

Last year, after reviewing earlier versions of the papers, the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity said publishing full details would be too risky. The federal government agreed.

Scientists around the world debated the matter. Many argued that full publication would help scientists track dangerous mutations in natural bird flu viruses and test vaccines and treatments.

On Friday, board members, meeting in Washington, announced they are satisfied with the revised papers. The panel's advice now goes to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for a decision.

The board unanimously supported publication of one study, led by Yoshihiro Kawaoka, of the University of Wisconsin. By majority vote it supported publication of the key parts of a second study, from Ron Fouchier, of the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

In an email, Kawaoka said the revisions to his paper "were mainly a more in-depth explanation of the significance of the findings to public health and a description of the laboratory biosafety and biosecurity."

Editors of the journals Science and Nature, which plan to publish the works, said they were pleased by the recommendation.

"Subject to any outstanding regulatory and legal issues, we intend to proceed with publication as soon as possible," said Philip Campbell, editor-in-chief of Nature.

The manmade viruses are locked in high-security labs. Publication in scientific journals is how scientists share their work so that their colleagues can build on it, perhaps finding ways to better monitor and thwart bird flu in the wild, for example.

University of Pennsylvania bioethics professor Art Caplan said the board's recommendation makes sense, primarily because the information in the studies is already being shared among scientists.

"The details of this paper are already out, these two papers. The horse is out of the barn, and trying to yank it back doesn't make much sense," Caplan said.

Natural bird flu has infected people through close contact with animals, and it doesn't easily spread from person to person. Scientists fear that a highly transmissible bird flu could cause a lethal pandemic.

The researchers say the transmissible germs they created did not actually kill the lab animals.

The bird flu virus, called H5N1, has spread mostly through poultry in Asia for the past decade. It has killed more than 300 people since 2003, mostly in Asia.

With all the media attention on the subject lately, the number of sexual harassment cases filed each year against restaurants and their owners are escalating at an all too rapid pace. Restaurant owners must now take a pro-active stance to keep such complaints from damaging their operation. All employees, male and female, need to be formally informed as to what types of conduct are unlawful. Assuming that your managers and employees know how to behave without explicit guidelines could be your ticket to the courthouse. A series of Supreme Court decisions have defined what ?sexual harassment? means. Those cases, and the interpretive guidelines of the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEOC), define two distinct types of sexual harassment:
. Quid pro quo (a legal term meaning ?this for that?), in which a supervisor demands sexual favors from an employee and threatens to fire the employee if the conditions are not met; and
. Hostile environment, in which a supervisor or employee creates a work environment through verbal or physical conduct that interferes with another co-worker?s job performance or creates an intimidating work environment. A hostile environment is created when unwelcome sexual behavior is repeated. For example, an employee keeps telling off-color jokes after another staff member says they are offensive, or one employee keeps asking another employee for dates after being refused.

GENERAL RULE: An employer?s obligation with regard to sexual harassment arises before any act of harassment even occurs. As such, most lawyers practicing in this field strongly urge their employer-clients to distribute a clear and explicit sexual harassment prohibition policy and reporting procedure. Additionally, Anti-harassment training should occur on a regular basis which should educate managers and other employees as to what conduct is specifically prohibited (including a presentation of hypothetical harassment scenarios) and what to do if the employee believes they have been/are being harassed.

This policy and training is critical because under federal case law, an employer can fulfill its obligation if it takes all reasonable steps to prevent harassment before it occurs and takes effective steps to promptly remedy the harassment after it takes place. If these general principles are consistently and carefully applied, the employer can go a long way towards limiting its exposure and liability for sexual harassment.

Researchers identify mechanism that makes breast cancer invasive

A new study has identified a key mechanism that causes breast cancer to spread. The research, published by Cell Press on March 30th in the journal Molecular Cell, enhances our knowledge about the signals that drive cancer metastasis and identifies new therapeutic targets for a lethal form of invasive breast cancer that is notoriously resistant to treatment.

Amplification of the gene for ErbB2 has been linked with aggressive forms of breast cancer and is associated with a poor outcome. Although ErbB2-positive breast cancers are routinely treated with chemotherapy and the ErbB2-targeted drug trastuzumab (Herceptin), this treatment often fails. "Nearly half of breast cancers with high ErbB2 expression are either initially non-responsive or eventually develop resistance to trastuzumab," explains senior study author, Dr. Tuula Kallunki, from the Danish Cancer Society Research Center. "Therefore, a better understanding of the molecular basis of ErbB2-induced malignancy is critical for further development of targeted treatments."

In the current study, Dr. Kallunki and colleagues discovered that ErbB2 induces expression of proteins called cathepsins. Previous work has linked cathepsins with metastasis of pancreatic cancer, specifically with tumor cell invasion of surrounding tissues and with the establishment of tumor blood supply. Using a three-dimensional model system to study ErbB2-induced cellular invasion, the researchers demonstrated that inhibition of cathepsins prevented ErbB2-driven breast cancer invasion. They went on to identify components of the complex signaling network linking ErbB2 and cathepsin expression with cancer invasiveness.

Taken together, the results demonstrate that the invasive behavior of ErbB2-positive cancer cells is dependent on cathepsin activity and uncover a molecular link between ErbB2 and breast cancer invasion. "Our work has introduced a cellular model system to study ErbB2-induced invasion and identified an invasion-promoting signaling network," concludes Dr. Kallunki. "In addition, our findings provide several potential therapeutic targets against ErbB2-driven invasive cancers."

Not like we haven't seen this dog-and-pony show before, but Flurry's latest round of analytics -- which measured revenue of 11 million daily active users from mid-January through the end of February 2012 -- shows Amazon's Appstore pulling in a shocking amount of revenue given the short life that it has lived. Apple's strength in sales has been well documented, but the latest report shows that for every $1 generated in the iTunes App Store, $0.89 is being spent in the Amazon Appstore. Looking more broadly, the numbers show that just $0.23 are generated in the Google Play halls for every $1 spent in the App Store, but that's hardly a new phenomenon; the ease of sideloading (amongst other factors) has raised complaints from Android developers for years now. Flurry's conclusion is that Google's core strength simply isn't in running a store -- something it's about to do once more with Android slates -- while both Apple and Amazon excel in doing just that. PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) ? People queuing up for Mega Millions tickets aren't the only ones salivating over the record $540 million jackpot that could be won Friday ? some state governments struggling through lean times know a hometown winner would bring a tax bonanza.

Taxes on a lump-sum payment option to a single winner could mean tens of millions of dollars of badly needed revenue that could go to restore entire social service programs on the chopping block, pay for hundreds of low-income housing units, forestall new taxes or hire more state troopers.

So many tickets have been sold that the jackpot climbed Thursday to the largest in U.S. lottery history, according to officials in Rhode Island, one of 42 states where Mega Millions is played. If a lone winner took the lump-sum payout on the jackpot's current amount, it would be an estimated $389.8 million.

"I'd love it if a Rhode Islander wins," said Rep. Helio Melo, the chairman of the House's Finance Committee.

In Rhode Island, when the tax man comes calling for his 5.99 percent, that would mean an estimated $23.3 million, forked over in a single payment.

With it, the state could pay for most of a $25 million bond for affordable housing that voters may be asked to approve this fall. It could also help Rhode Island reach its goal for aid to school districts for the first time. The state, which has a $7.9 billion budget, is $22 million short.

A big lottery windfall wouldn't solve the state's fiscal woes, but it could help chip away at the debt, pay for one-time expenses or delay budget cuts or tax increases ? including on expensive clothing, pet grooming, car washes and taxi fares ? at least for a year, Melo said.

States set their own tax rates on lottery winnings. New York, for instance, charges 8.82 percent, while several, including California, charge none.

Ohio's share of the lump-sum payout would be $23 million, hardly pocket change but still a fraction of the state's $56 billion two-year budget.

"We're not holding our breath waiting for a tax windfall for the state, but we will always root for Ohio and Ohioans and hope lottery luck comes to a Buckeye," said Joe Testa, the state's tax commissioner.

In Montana, lawmakers already could have an excess of $500 million to work with when they write a budget in 2013. Another $50 million or so from tax collections on an in-state Mega Millions win would be icing on the cake.

State Sen. Dave Lewis, a former Montana budget director who now leads the Finance Committee, said he would use his influence to make sure the windfall is used for one-time spending, such as on buildings and infrastructure.

"I just bought a ticket," he said. "I hope it's me."

Rhode Island already has a tax windfall coming its way from two recent Powerball wins. An 81-year-old Newport woman won the Feb. 11 jackpot worth $336.4 million, and the winning ticket for $60 million jackpot on March 7 was sold here.

The Rhode Island Association of School Committees has asked the state to use the $17 million for technology and wireless Internet in schools. That would be in place of a $20 million bond.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee has said the state, which is facing a $117 million budget shortfall next fiscal year, can't rely on those lottery winnings ? and, of course, no state can. But his director of administration recently weighed in, saying of the tax payment: "We're happy to collect it."

Hello! So apparently Clive heard through the grapevine that our other roleplay gives them a super-awesome private thread for them to just kind of relax and have fun when they're not risking their lives on our plot, so... yeah. I was forced to make one here as well. Yeah. So I don't know about you guys, but Clive and Farren are pretty much the same off-screen as when they're on, so I'm pretty much out of lu -

Okay, is this it? This is the lounge? Well it's not really as pretty as I thought it'd be but it'll do. Hey! This is Clive, and I'm here to welcome all you changers out there - uh, and human child...? - to the Characters' Lounge! It's made for us and only for us where we can do anything we want and not get in any trouble at all. I for one plan to murder a certain creator of mine after I'm done with this. Uh, anyways, enjoy the room. Anyone is welcome as long as you're a part of Skinwalkers: Resonance of the Lost.

Vending machines are to the left, ping-pong tables to the right, and that sofa in the middle? It's mine. No one touch it. I claimed it. Oh, and the espresso machine. That's mine too. I lost the remote to the TV though... so... okay, yeah, that wasn't my fault!

Anyway, if it were working, we'd be able to watch how we've been doing in the roleplay universe should that become necessary... but yeah, someone has to get up to change the channel every time then. On a different note, there are also waiters and such if you need them... Cienpher put a little effort into this -

Ahem. Pardon that minor intrusion. So, yes, where was I... this is a place for the characters of Skinwalkers, get to know each other outside the context of the roleplay. There is a very good virtual reality system installed so that at the press of a button... wait... of the remote that Clive lost... darn it... the setting of this lounge can change... just for fun, we can see how they characters react on an alien planet or such. Do note, however, that this is not a roleplay of its own - it is for fun and laughs XD

Trayvon witness' mom: Police doubt self-defense

The mother of a 13-year-old witness in the slaying of Trayvon Martin said Wednesday that police waited five days before seeking to question her son and then told her they didn't believe the shooting was self-defense.

Asked by host Al Sharpton on MSNBC TV's "PoliticsNation" whether the boy, who called 911 at the time of the incident Feb. 26, believed George Zimmerman, 28, shot Martin, 17, in self-defense, Cheryl Brown firmly replied, "Not at all."

(Msnbc.com is not naming the boy because he is a minor. Sharpton has been active in protests and petitions seeking to have Zimmerman arrested.)

ABC News reported this week that Sanford, Fla., police sources told it that the boy saw a man fitting Zimmerman's description lying on the grass crying for help seconds before he heard the gunshot that killed Martin. Many news organizations, including msnbc.com, linked to and referred to the ABC News report. Advocates for Zimmerman have argued that the report supported his attorney's claim that he fired in self-defense.

Sanford police, who have previously said they wouldn't take questions about the case, didn't answer calls seeking comment from msnbc.com on Wednesday.

The shooting occurred Feb. 26, and Brown's son called 911 to report it at the time. But police didn't seek to question him until March 2, Brown said. She wasn't home, so they returned March 5, meaning eight days passed before police actually questioned a key eyewitness.

"I was waiting every day for someone to come knocking on the door," she said.

Once they did, Brown alleged, police tried to lead her son to agree to certain assertions, such as the race of the person on the ground and what he was wearing. But the boy stuck to his insistence that he couldn't make out either because it was too dark.

Brown alleged that the lead investigator "told me this was not self-defense," saying she should "read between the lines" because "this was racial stereotyping."

Martin was black; Zimmerman is Hispanic.

She said the investigator said he had children of his own "and seemed angered by it," saying, "I need to prove this was not self-defense."

Brown's son was walking the family dog when he saw the person lying on the ground, she said. He went to help, but the dog escaped from its leash, so he went chasing after it rather than rushing to the person, she said.?

Police have confirmed that Zimmerman told them that Martin knocked him to the ground and began beating him. At no time did her son see anyone beating anyone, Brown said.

In the days since the shooting, the boy has reflected on whether he might have been able to help or even save Martin had he not tried to retrieve his dog, she said.

"Unfortunately, he has a lot of guilt about that," she said.
