Builders Unveil New, More Social, Homes

new more social homesBy Robbie Whelan

They say in tough economic times, we rely more on our friends and family for support. That concept, it seems, has made its way into new home design.

Each year at the National Association of Home Builders? IBS convention, thousands of companies display their wares and try to market new products to consumers and builders. They also build a few new homes.

There?s always the NAHB?s ?New American Home,? a high-end model meant to reflect the changing trends in American residential construction. And since 1998, IBS has partnered with Builder magazine, a trade publication, to support the construction of the Builder Concept Home, which essentially serves the same purpose: to highlight new trends and show off the latest in new-home design.

This year?s selection for the ?New American Home.?

Last year, national builder KB Home unveiled its Martha Stewart-branded ?green? designs, which featured big energy savings and features like an electric car-charging station in the garage. This year, Centerline Homes, a large Florida builder, built three homes, on a horseshoe-shaped cul-de-sac in Orlando: one for Generation X, one for Generation Y, one for the Baby Boomers.

The three homes are different in size and style, but they have one thing in common: an emphasis on social and family time, entertaining and interaction. In addition, the homes are smaller than the McMansions of years past, further proof that builders are ?right-sizing? homes, or making them smaller and cozier, partly to keep prices down during a tough economy.
